Camping near Olympia, Washington

Olympia sits at the southern tip of Puget Sound, surrounded by forest, freshwater lakes, and the rural Thurston County countryside. RV travelers use the city as a base for the Washington State Capitol Campus, the Billy Frank Jr. Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge, and day trips to Mount Rainier or the Olympic Peninsula. Interstate 5 runs through town, so most campgrounds sit within a short drive of an exit. The nearest options range from in-town RV parks to forested state-park camping. Olympia Campground and Fuel and WA Land Yacht Harbor RV Park and Event Center serve travelers who want hookups close to services. American Heritage Campgrounds offers a wooded setting just off I-5 south of town, while Millersylvania State Park provides old-growth forest camping on Deep Lake. Offut Lake Resort, south of Olympia near Tenino, adds lakefront fishing and cabins to the mix. The area suits family trips, capital-region sightseeing, and shoulder-season Pacific Northwest road trips.

Things to do near Olympia

Day-use activities cluster around water, forest, and the capital. At Millersylvania State Park, families swim at two beaches on Deep Lake, paddle hand-carried kayaks and paddleboards, and walk miles of forested hiking and biking trails through old-growth cedar and fir. Volunteer-led interpretive walks are offered during the summer months. Offut Lake Resort centers on dock fishing on an electric-motor-only lake stocked with trout, bass, and perch, with a lakefront restaurant on site. American Heritage Campgrounds adds family amenities geared toward kids. Off the campground, Olympia itself offers the State Capitol Campus, Hands On Children's Museum, Tumwater Falls Park, and the Nisqually wildlife refuge. Mount Rainier and the Olympic Peninsula are both reachable as day trips.

Olympia's camping season runs strongest from late May through September, when rainfall drops sharply and daytime highs sit in the mid-70s Fahrenheit. July and August are the driest months and the busiest for reservations, with average highs near 78 and lows around 52. Many seasonal amenities at Millersylvania State Park, including watercraft rentals from the Lakeside Grill and Boats concession, operate during the summer season. Shoulder seasons in spring and fall bring cool, damp weather and lighter crowds. Trails can be muddy, lake water is cold, and rain gear is essential. October through April is the wet season, with November the rainiest month and December the coldest. Winter camping is possible but limited. Millersylvania State Park accepts reservations year-round, though some park facilities are closed in the off-season. Private parks such as Offut Lake Resort operate year-round, with fishing available on the lake in every season. Snow is uncommon at Olympia's low elevation but does occur, with a January average around an inch and a half.

Really great RV that was easy to drive and worked really well. Lots of space with the pop out, AC blows cold and the heating is warm. Was very comfortable the whole time. Steve the host is great and took the time to show me how everything worked in detail and had me completely comfortable to go on my trip. Can’t recommend this rental enough. Thank you.

We had such a great weekend camping in the Memory Maker! Danielle has thought of everything when it comes to making life easy while you are “roughing it”. We felt cozy and comfortable sleeping as a family of 5. It was easy to pull behind our Tahoe as well. Great experience all around, we already have our next trip booked!

Danielle is a great host! The trailer was wonderfully laid out and perfect for a family of four. It was very clean and everything worked perfectly! Our family had a great time and would definitely rent from Danielle again!

How to book

Washington State Parks campgrounds, including Millersylvania State Park, are reserved through washington.goingtocamp.com or by calling 888-CAMPOUT. The reservation window opens up to nine months in advance of the arrival date, and same-day bookings are accepted online until 2 p.m. A Discover Pass is required for day-use vehicle parking at state parks but not for registered overnight campers. Private campgrounds in the Olympia area each handle bookings differently. American Heritage Campgrounds, Offut Lake Resort, Olympia Campground and Fuel, and WA Land Yacht Harbor RV Park and Event Center are typically booked by phone or through the campground's own website. For July and August stays, secure sites well ahead. Off-season weekday stays are usually available on shorter notice.

What to expect on site

Sites near Olympia are generally wooded, with tall Douglas fir and cedar overhead. Expect filtered sun, soft ground, and the chance of moss on tables and pads. Cell service is inconsistent under heavy canopy, particularly at Millersylvania State Park. RV length matters at the state park: standard campsites limit total vehicle length to 35 feet, trailers over 18 feet are not permitted in the standard loop due to narrow roads, and utility sites accommodate RVs up to 60 feet with limited availability. Partial-hookup sites with 30-amp electric and water are available, and a dump station is on site. Private parks such as American Heritage Campgrounds and Offut Lake Resort offer full or partial hookups; pull-through availability varies. Bring layers for cool evenings even in summer, rain gear in the shoulder seasons, and a leash for dogs. Firewood gathering is prohibited in state parks; buy bundles on site.
