RV camping near Birch Bay, Washington
Birch Bay sits on a shallow saltwater bay in northwest Whatcom County, about 25 minutes north of Bellingham and 10 minutes south of the Canadian border at Blaine. The area is a summer beach destination with a walkable shoreline, tidal flats, and views across the Salish Sea to the Gulf Islands.
Birch Bay State Park anchors the public camping options, a 194-acre park with more than 8,000 feet of saltwater shoreline and additional freshwater frontage on Terrell Creek. Private RV parks fill in the rest of the market, including Beachside RV Park, Lighthouse By The Bay RV Resort, Ball Bayview RV Park, Beachwood Resort, and Sun Retreats Birch Bay. These properties range from full-hookup resort setups with pools and clubhouses to smaller bayfront lots geared toward travelers moving between Seattle and Vancouver.
Most sites accommodate mid-sized travel trailers and Class C rigs, and the state park lists space for RVs up to 60 feet in length. Cell service is generally reliable, and grocery, fuel, and propane are available in Birch Bay and nearby Blaine and Ferndale.
Things to do around Birch Bay
The bay itself is the main draw. Warm, shallow water at low tide makes it usable for wading, kite flying, kayaking, and paddleboarding, and the shoreline is a productive spot for beachcombing and shellfish gathering. Crabbing and fishing are common during open seasons regulated by Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife.
Inside Birch Bay State Park, the half-mile Terrell Marsh Interpretive Trail loops through wetlands with signage on local ecology, and a summer interpretive program runs for families. Biking is popular along Birch Bay Drive, which follows the water for several miles.
Day trips are easy from an RV base here. Bellingham, the San Juan Islands ferry at Anacortes, Mount Baker foothills, and the Peace Arch border crossing at Blaine are all within an hour's drive.

Peak season runs mid-May through mid-September, matching Birch Bay State Park's reservable window and the warmest, driest weather. July is the driest month of the year, and summer daytime highs generally sit in the upper 60s to low 70s Fahrenheit. Weekends and holidays fill first, and Canadian visitors add to demand around statutory holidays on both sides of the border.
Shoulder seasons in April, May, and September bring cooler temperatures, more rain, and much better site availability. Private parks in the area typically stay open year-round with reduced services, while the state park shifts to first-come, first-served in its North Loop from September 16 to May 14.
Winter is wet and mild rather than snowy, though frost and occasional lowland snow occur. The state park is typically winterized by late November and de-winterized by late March, so water at some sites may be off during that window.
How to book a site
Birch Bay State Park sites are reservable May 15 through September 15 through the Washington State Parks reservation system, operated on the Going to Camp platform. Reservations open up to nine months in advance, and popular summer weekends can book out within minutes of the window opening. Outside the reservable window, the North Loop runs first-come, first-served.
Private parks such as Beachside RV Park, Lighthouse By The Bay RV Resort, Ball Bayview RV Park, Beachwood Resort, and Sun Retreats Birch Bay each take bookings directly through their own websites or phone lines. Policies on minimum stays, cancellation, and pet fees vary by property.
A Discover Pass is required for day-use parking at Washington state parks but is included with an overnight camping reservation.
What to expect on arrival
Roads into Birch Bay are paved and easy to navigate with a trailer, with Interstate 5 exits at Custer and Blaine feeding the area. Most private RV parks offer full hookups with 30 and 50 amp service, dump stations, and Wi-Fi of varying quality. State park sites are a mix of standard and water-and-electric only, and a shared dump station is available on site.
Summer sites can be tight in the trees at Birch Bay State Park, so measure the rig and check site length before booking. Bring layers, biting insects are limited but marine air keeps evenings cool even in July.
Quiet hours are enforced at both public and private campgrounds. Pets are allowed on leash at the state park and at most private properties, though breed and length restrictions apply at some resorts.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Birch Bay, WA
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Birch Bay, WA?
RV rental in Birch Bay is approachable for a Pacific Northwest beach destination. On RVezy, travel trailers and pop-ups typically range from about $95 to $200 per night, while Class C motorhomes generally run $175 to $300 per night. Because peak season is short (mid-June through early September), booking in May or late September can unlock meaningful savings on the same rigs. If you want a cheap RV rental in Birch Bay, filter for towable trailers and look for hosts offering delivery to Birch Bay State Park, which saves you fuel and the cost of a tow vehicle. Pro tip: midweek shoulder-season stays are the best value for budget-minded travelers.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Birch%20Bay%2C%20WADo I need a special license to rent an RV in Birch Bay, Washington?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Birch Bay, WA. Washington State Department of Licensing only requires a Commercial Driver License (CDL) for single vehicles rated 26,001 pounds or more, and nearly every RV on RVezy (Class B campervans, Class C motorhomes, travel trailers, and most Class A coaches under that threshold) falls well below that limit when driven for personal use. You'll need to be at least 25 years old to book, and RVezy verifies your ID right inside the platform, so there's no paperwork shuffle at pickup. International visitor? Pair your home license with an International Driving Permit and you're set for your Birch Bay RV trip.
dol.wa.gov/driver-licenses-and-permits/commercial-driver-licenses-cdl/do-i-need-cdlWhat protection and roadside coverage is included with my Birch Bay RV rental?
Every RV rental in Birch Bay booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can focus on tide pools instead of worst-case scenarios. The protection plan covers most physical damage to the vehicle, and you choose your coverage level at checkout (the host does not pick for you). Roadside help is one phone call away whether you are at Birch Bay State Park, halfway up Mount Baker Highway, or pulled over near Blaine. It is not traditional auto insurance, but it provides real financial protection and peace of mind. Pro tip: pick your protection tier early in the booking flow so you can see your total trip cost up front.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Birch Bay RV trip?
Plans change, and RVezy is built to handle it. RVezy (not individual hosts) sets the cancellation policy that applies to every booking, including a money-back grace period right after you book. That uniform approach means you do not have to compare confusing host-by-host rules when shopping for a campervan rental Birch Bay travelers love. If a host cancels your trip, RVezy helps you secure a refund or rebooking. Specific timelines depend on how far out your trip is, so review the cancellation details on the checkout page before confirming. Booking early to lock in the rig you want is genuinely low risk.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Birch Bay RV rental?
Absolutely, and Birch Bay is a great dog town. Many hosts offer pet-friendly RV rental Birch Bay options, and you can find them quickly using the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy. Once you are here, leashed dogs are welcome on the beach and trails at Birch Bay State Park, and the Birch Bay Berm walking path along the shoreline is paw-perfect at low tide. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any pet fee and ask about RVs with easy-to-clean vinyl flooring, much friendlier for sandy paws after a beach walk.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Birch%20Bay%2C%20WA&PetFriendly=trueCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Birch Bay?
Yes, RV delivery Birch Bay is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-timers who would rather skip driving a big rig. Many local hosts will deliver to Birch Bay State Park, Thousand Trails Birch Bay, Beachwood Resort, or even a private driveway, then set up the rig, level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system. You just show up with groceries and beach towels. Delivery fees vary by distance, but it is often the smartest money you will spend on a motorhome rental Birch Bay vacation. Pro tip: confirm the campsite number with your host so they can position the awning toward the sunset side.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Birch%20Bay%2C%20WA&Delivery=trueHow far can I drive my Birch Bay RV rental, and is unlimited mileage available?
You have real range from Birch Bay. Hosts set their own daily mileage allowances on RVezy (commonly 100 to 150 free miles per day), and many offer an RV rental with unlimited mileage upgrade for longer trips. Popular drives stay well within typical allowances: Mount Baker Ski Area is about 60 miles east, Larrabee State Park sits about 25 miles south near Bellingham Bay, Deception Pass State Park is roughly 60 miles south, and downtown Bellingham is just 20 miles away. Planning a longer Pacific Northwest loop? Message the host before booking to negotiate added miles. Pro tip: map your route in advance so you can confirm the perfect mileage package up front.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Birch%20Bay%2C%20WAWhere are the best campgrounds for RV camping Birch Bay?
You are spoiled for choice. Birch Bay State Park (5105 Helweg Road) is the headline act with around 167 campsites, including 20 partial-hookup sites, hot showers, and a trailer dump station right on the saltwater shoreline. Thousand Trails Birch Bay on Harborview Road has full hookups, a seasonal pool, and an off-leash dog area. Beachwood Resort offers full-hookup sites with pools and hot tubs, while Lighthouse by the Bay RV Resort and Bay Horizon RV Park keep you close to the beach. Pro tip: Birch Bay State Park reservations open through the Washington State Parks system and summer weekends fill fast, so book the moment your dates lock in.
parks.wa.gov/find-parks/parks/birch-bay-state-parkWhen is the best time of year to rent an RV in Birch Bay?
July and August are the sweet spot for any Birch Bay RV trip. Daytime highs typically average in the low to mid 70s F, July is one of the driest months of the year, and the bay's shallow tide flats warm up enough to be genuinely swimmable for the Pacific Northwest. June and September are excellent shoulder months with cooler evenings, fewer crowds, and lower nightly rates. Winter is wet and cool (40s during the day, 30s at night) but several parks like Thousand Trails Birch Bay stay open year-round for a quiet, moody coastal escape.
weather.gov/sew/I have never driven an RV. Will I be okay in Birch Bay?
You will be fine. First time renting an RV in Birch Bay is actually one of the friendlier places to learn. The local roads (Birch Bay Drive, Blaine Road, Birch Bay Lynden Road) are flat, slow, and rural, with lighter traffic than I-5 or Seattle. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup: how to level the rig, hook up at Birch Bay State Park's partial-hookup sites, work the awning, and dump tanks. You can also message the host before booking with any worry, big or small. Pro tip: choose delivery for your first trip so your only driving is short hops to the grocery store in Blaine or coffee in Bellingham.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if the RV breaks down during my Birch Bay trip?
Take a breath, you are covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance with the protection plan, so whether you have a flat tire on Birch Bay Drive, a dead battery at Thousand Trails, or a mechanical hiccup on the way back from Mount Baker, one phone call gets help dispatched. Your host is also a real person who knows their rig and is typically a quick text away for system-specific questions like why the water pump will not prime. Cell coverage is solid throughout Whatcom County thanks to Birch Bay's proximity to Bellingham. Pro tip: save the RVezy support number and your host's number to your phone the day you pick up, so help is one tap away.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Birch Bay RV rental across the border into Canada?
Cross-border travel is a real possibility from Birch Bay since you're only about 7 miles south of the Peace Arch crossing in Blaine, but it requires the host's written approval and confirmation that their insurance extends into Canada. Message the host directly from the listing before booking to ask. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental because coverage doesn't extend there. Popular cross-border day trips include White Rock (15 minutes), Vancouver (45 minutes), and the ferries to Vancouver Island. Pro tip: have your passport and the RV's registration and insurance documents ready at the booth, and declare any fresh produce or firewood to avoid hold-ups at the border.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goWhat kind of fuel mileage and budget should I expect for an RV road trip from Birch Bay?
Plan your fuel budget realistically and you will be pleasantly surprised by how little driving you actually do. Class B campervans get roughly 18 to 22 mpg, Class C motorhomes 8 to 12 mpg, and Class A coaches 6 to 10 mpg, while travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle. Washington gas prices typically run high, so fill up in Ferndale or Bellingham where stations are often cheaper than the small Birch Bay stops. The good news: most Birch Bay itineraries are short. A weeklong base-camp trip with day drives to Bellingham, Lynden, and Mount Baker rarely tops 200 total miles. Pro tip: use a price-comparison app to find the lowest pump price along I-5.
gasprices.aaa.com/?state=WAHow far in advance should I book a campground near Birch Bay?
Reserve early and you will lock in the best campgrounds near Birch Bay without stress. Birch Bay State Park accepts reservations through the Washington State Parks system, and summer weekends and holidays (Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day) sell out within minutes of release, so set a calendar alert and book months in advance. Private parks like Thousand Trails Birch Bay, Beachwood Resort, and Lighthouse by the Bay book directly through their own websites and typically have more last-minute flexibility. Pro tip: during the off season, some sites at Birch Bay State Park shift to first-come, first-served, which is great for spontaneous trips.
parks.wa.gov/find-parks/parks/birch-bay-state-parkWhat are local driving conditions like around Birch Bay?
Driving around Birch Bay is genuinely easy. The streets near the bay are flat, low-speed, and laid out in a simple grid, with I-5 (Exit 270 at Birch Bay Lynden Road) just a few miles east for longer trips. Summer brings heavier weekend traffic on Birch Bay Drive near the state park and the waterslides, so move early in the day. Winter conditions can include fog rolling off the bay and occasional black ice on side roads, while rare snow events usually clear within hours. If you are heading up to Mount Baker, the road climbs steeply past Glacier; lower a gear and take it slow. Pro tip: avoid the Blaine-Peace Arch border crossing Sunday afternoons when wait times spike.
wsdot.com/travel/real-time/mapWhat hookups, dump stations, and water fills are available in Birch Bay campgrounds?
You will find solid infrastructure for any Birch Bay RV trip. Birch Bay State Park offers 20 partial-hookup sites (water and electric) plus a trailer dump station and potable water fill near the park entrance. Thousand Trails Birch Bay, Beachwood Resort, Lighthouse by the Bay, and Bay Horizon RV Park offer full hookups (water, electric, sewer) at most sites. Standard sites at the state park have no hookups but include access to clean restrooms, hot showers, and shared water spigots. Cell signal and basic Wi-Fi are available at most private parks. Pro tip: top off fresh water before you check in if you booked a non-hookup site, and ask your RVezy host to demonstrate the dump station process during your walkthrough.
parks.wa.gov/find-parks/parks/birch-bay-state-parkWhat's typically included inside a Birch Bay RV rental?
Most RVs on RVezy come trip-ready. Expect a queen or full bed, a kitchen with stove, microwave, fridge, and basic cookware, an indoor bathroom with shower and toilet, dinette seating with seatbelts for travel, and climate control via furnace and air conditioning. Many also include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor awning, and exterior speakers for beach playlists. Generators, Wi-Fi hotspots, and solar setups are common on newer rigs and great for stays at Birch Bay State Park's standard (non-hookup) sites. Bedding and kitchen kits vary by host, so check the listing's Amenities tab. Pro tip: message the host to confirm seatbelt count if you're traveling with kids, since safe travel seats are essential for the drive in.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/rvsWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about when I rent an RV in Birch Bay?
RVezy hosts in Washington often offer popular add-ons that make your trip easier: linen and towel packages, camp chairs and outdoor rugs, propane refills, generators, bike racks, kayaks, and stocked kitchen kits. Many also offer delivery and setup to Birch Bay State Park or Thousand Trails for a flat fee based on distance. Pickup is usually at the host's home in Birch Bay, Blaine, Ferndale, or Bellingham, with a 30 to 60 minute orientation. Mileage policies are set by the host (often 100 to 150 free miles per day), with unlimited mileage available on many listings. Pro tip: bundle delivery plus a linen package and you will arrive to a fully made-up RV, the closest thing to a hotel experience the RV world offers.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Birch%20Bay%2C%20WAHow does payment and the security deposit work for an RV rental in Birch Bay, WA?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through RVezy at booking using a credit or debit card, and the platform holds your funds until your trip starts (your host does not receive payment until after pickup). A refundable security deposit is held separately during your trip, with the amount set per listing and shown clearly before you confirm. As long as the RV is returned in the same condition, the deposit is released after your trip wraps. Avoid issues by taking date-stamped photos at pickup and drop-off, sticking to the host's mileage and generator policies, and emptying tanks before return. Pro tip: keep all trip communication inside RVezy's messaging so everything is documented if any question comes up.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat are the best road trips and day trips from Birch Bay?
An RV road trip from Birch Bay puts the entire upper-left corner of Washington at your wheel. Drive 20 miles south to Bellingham for breweries and Fairhaven's waterfront, continue along Chuckanut Drive to Larrabee State Park for sweeping Salish Sea views, or head about 60 miles south to Deception Pass State Park for jaw-dropping bridge vistas. Mount Baker Ski Area sits about 60 miles east via Highway 542 with peak alpine scenery in summer. Cross into Canada (about 7 miles north) and you are 45 minutes from Vancouver. For a longer family RV trip Birch Bay travelers love, loop south toward Olympic National Park. Pro tip: pick up fresh berries and produce at Lynden's farm stands on the way home.
