Othello camping overview
Othello sits in the Columbia Basin of eastern Washington, a semi-arid farming community surrounded by irrigated cropland, shrub-steppe, and the basalt scablands carved by the Ice Age Missoula Floods. The Columbia National Wildlife Refuge stretches northwest from town for miles of channeled scablands, rocky slopes, basalt landscapes, and dried creek beds, with Potholes Reservoir just to the north. The reservoir and refuge together anchor most RV trips to the region.
Campground options range from full-service resorts to a state park. MarDon RV resort sits on the shore of Potholes Reservoir near Othello and offers RV camping, tent camping, cabins, and condos. Potholes State Park sits on the same reservoir with public campsites and cabins, while Sage Hills Golf Club and RV Resort, Warden Lake RV Resort, and Sundesert RV Park round out the nearby private options.
Most travelers combine reservoir access with birding at the wildlife refuge, day trips to Moses Lake, and drives through the Drumheller Channels.
Things to do near Othello
Potholes Reservoir drives most of the outdoor activity. The reservoir offers year-round fishing for yellow perch, crappie, largemouth bass, rainbow trout, and walleye, making it a well-known destination for anglers. During the summer, waterskiing, kayaking, and paddleboarding are popular on the reservoir. MarDon RV resort has a marina and boat launch, and Potholes State Park provides additional shoreline access and a boat ramp on the reservoir.
Birding is the other main draw. Croplands around the refuge attract Canada and cackling geese along with large concentrations of migrating sandhill cranes. Hiking trails at the state park and refuge lead past basalt cliffs, wetlands, and wildlife viewing points. The Drumheller Channels National Natural Landmark, designated in 1986, offers self-guided driving loops through dramatic scabland terrain.

The Columbia Basin has a cold semi-arid climate with hot dry summers and cold winters. Located in eastern Washington at reservoir elevation, the area experiences hot, dry summers and generally mild winters with limited snow accumulation. July and August routinely push into the upper 80s Fahrenheit, so shaded sites and hookups with air conditioning matter for summer RV trips.
Spring is the marquee wildlife season. Up to 35,000 sandhill cranes use the Columbia National Wildlife Refuge and the farmlands around Royal City and Othello as a stopping point during spring migration to Alaska. The Othello Sandhill Crane Festival is held in March and fills local lodging, so RV sites at MarDon RV resort and Potholes State Park should be booked well ahead.
Fall brings waterfowl hunting, cooler temperatures, and shorter days. Bald eagles winter in the area, and sandhill cranes stop again during fall migration. Potholes State Park operates year round, though water and some services are reduced during the coldest months.
How to book campgrounds near Othello
Reservation systems vary by campground. Potholes State Park has campsites with water and electrical hookups along Potholes Reservoir, with reservations handled through the Washington State Parks reservation system. The park is popular with boaters and anglers, summer weekends fill up quickly, and booking ahead is recommended, especially when bringing a boat or trailer. Campsites and cabins can be reserved up to nine months in advance of the arrival date.
MarDon RV resort books directly through the resort by phone or website. Advance reservations are strongly recommended, particularly for holiday weekends and during the peak summer fishing season. Sage Hills Golf Club and RV Resort, Warden Lake RV Resort, and Sundesert RV Park each handle reservations on their own websites or by phone.
Washington State Parks requires a Discover Pass for all vehicles parking at state recreation lands; a daily pass or an annual pass can be purchased.
What to expect on the ground
Expect open shrub-steppe scenery, big sky, and limited tree cover at most sites. Bring shade, sun protection, and plenty of water. Summer heat can be intense, and shoreline sites at MarDon RV resort and Potholes State Park exposed to afternoon sun benefit from an awning.
Bugs and wildlife require some planning. Mosquitoes near the reservoir marshes can be heavy in late spring and early summer, so pack repellent. Campers should be cautious of wildlife in the area, including rattlesnakes and coyotes, and keep food securely stored while maintaining a safe distance from these animals.
Connectivity is uneven outside town. Cell service at Potholes State Park is limited and can be unreliable depending on carrier, so download offline maps before arrival and let someone know your itinerary if heading onto the water or into remote areas of the reservoir. Water levels in Potholes Reservoir fluctuate through the year, which affects shoreline access and beach camping.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Othello, WA
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Othello, WA?
An RV rental in Othello is one of the more affordable ways to explore the Columbia Basin. On RVezy, travel trailers typically run about $90 to $160 per night, while Class C motorhomes generally land between $175 and $295 per night, plus fuel and any mileage or add-ons the host offers. Because Othello sits in a quiet agricultural region rather than a major tourist hub, you often find better nightly rates than in Seattle or Spokane. To score a cheap RV rental in Othello, try midweek pickups, shoulder seasons like April or October, and trailers over motorhomes. Book at least three months ahead of the March Sandhill Crane Festival when local inventory tightens fast.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Othello%2C%20WashingtonWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Othello?
Good news for first-timers: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Othello. Washington does not require a special endorsement or commercial license for any RV you can book on RVezy, from a compact campervan to a 35-foot Class A. Approved drivers are generally 25 or older, and RVezy verifies your ID directly through the platform during checkout, so there's no extra DMV trip. Visiting from abroad? Bring your home-country license, ideally with an International Driving Permit, and you're set. Most renters are surprised how quick the approval is, often the same day you book.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs my RV rental in Othello covered if something happens on the trip?
Yes. Every RVezy booking in Othello includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can explore the Drumheller Channels back roads with real peace of mind. The protection plan helps cover damages to the RV during your trip, which matters in eastern Washington where gravel roads near the Columbia National Wildlife Refuge can kick up the occasional rock. You choose your coverage level at checkout, so you can dial up protection if you're a first-time renter or stick with a basic plan if you're experienced. It is not traditional auto insurance, but it gives renters serious financial backup. Book confidently and focus on the cranes, not the what-ifs.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Othello RV rental?
You're not locked in the moment you book. RVezy sets a standardized cancellation policy with a full money-back grace period right after booking, plus additional refund windows depending on how far out your trip is. Because RVezy, not the host, sets the cancellation terms, you get consistent rules across every listing in Othello. You'll see the exact details on the checkout screen and in your confirmation email. Book early to lock in the best rigs for the Sandhill Crane Festival in March, knowing you have clear flexibility if plans shift.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an Othello RV trip?
Absolutely, and Othello is a great dog-friendly destination. Many hosts on RVezy offer a pet-friendly RV rental in Othello: just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter when searching. Once you're here, your dog can join you on leashed walks through portions of the Columbia National Wildlife Refuge, the Wetlands to Rimrocks trail system, and around Potholes State Park's freshwater shoreline. Lions Park inside Othello city limits has open lawn space perfect for a stretch after a long drive. Eastern Washington trails can be hot and home to rattlesnakes from May through September, so plan early-morning hikes and pack extra water for your dog.
fws.gov/refuge/columbiaCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Othello?
Yes, RV delivery in Othello is one of the smartest moves for first-time renters. Many RVezy hosts will drive the motorhome or trailer directly to popular spots like MarDon Resort on Potholes Reservoir or Potholes State Park, then level it, hook up utilities, and walk you through every system. That means no towing stress, no backing into a tight site, and no learning curve on day one. Delivery fees vary by distance, and many hosts include free delivery within a set radius of Othello. Filter by Delivery on RVezy to see who offers it, then message the host to confirm your campground.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Othello%2C%20WashingtonHow far can I drive from Othello on a typical RV rental?
You have serious range from Othello, and many hosts offer generous daily mileage, with some even providing RV rental with unlimited mileage. From here, Grand Coulee Dam is about 75 miles north, Spokane is around 110 miles northeast, Mount Rainier National Park is roughly 175 miles west, Walla Walla wine country is about 110 miles south, and Leavenworth's Bavarian village is about 130 miles northwest. The Tri-Cities sit just 70 miles south for a quick add-on. Always check the listing's mileage policy and confirm overage rates before booking; if your route is ambitious, message the host for a custom package. A loop combining Othello, Grand Coulee, and Leavenworth makes a great 4-day RV road trip from Othello.
wsdot.wa.gov/travel/real-time-travel/travel-timesWhere are the best campgrounds near Othello for RV camping?
You're spoiled for choice. Top campgrounds near Othello include Potholes State Park (about 15 miles northwest, with extensive shoreline on Potholes Reservoir, full-hookup sites, and a dump station), MarDon Resort on Potholes Reservoir (lakeside sites, restaurant, and full hookups), and Sun Basin RV Park, a tidy in-town option with 30/50 amp full hookups. Several private resorts along Highway 262 also offer big-rig friendly sites near the reservoir. Potholes State Park books up months ahead for summer weekends and the Sandhill Crane Festival, so reserve early through the Washington State Parks reservation system.
parks.wa.gov/find-parks/parks/potholes-state-parkWhen is the best time to visit Othello in an RV?
Othello shines from mid-March through early June and again from September into October. March is iconic thanks to the Othello Sandhill Crane Festival, when tens of thousands of sandhill cranes pass through the Columbia National Wildlife Refuge. Spring brings wildflowers and highs in the 60s to low 70s. Summer (July highs around 90 degrees) is hot and arid, perfect for Potholes Reservoir water sports but plan AC time. Winters are cold with January highs in the upper 30s and occasional snow. Shoulder season is the smart-money move: fewer crowds, cooler driving, and better RV pricing.
weather.gov/otx/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay in Othello?
You're going to do great, and Othello is an ideal place for first time renting an RV. The town sits on flat, wide-open Columbia Basin terrain with light traffic, easy parking, and straight highways like SR-17 and SR-26, perfect for getting comfortable with a bigger rig. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through the generator, slide-outs, water system, and dump procedure before you leave. You can message your host anytime during the trip, and 24/7 roadside assistance is included with your protection plan. Book a Class C motorhome or smaller travel trailer for your first Othello RV trip; they drive intuitively and fit every local campground.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat if I break down or need help during my Othello RV trip?
You're covered around the clock. Every RV rental in Othello booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance with your protection plan, which means one phone call gets you a tow, tire change, jump start, or lockout service no matter where you are, whether that's gravel roads near Drumheller Channels or a remote pullout on Highway 26. You can also reach the RVezy customer support team before, during, and after your trip for booking or host-related questions. Your host is just a message away too, and most respond within minutes. Snap a photo of the RV's VIN and your roadside assistance number at pickup so you have them handy if cell service dips out in the scablands.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Othello rental into Canada or other states?
Crossing into Idaho or Oregon is generally straightforward, and many RVezy hosts in Othello welcome trips to Coeur d'Alene, Hells Canyon, or the Oregon coast. Cross-border travel into Canada depends on the host and insurance terms, so message the listing directly before booking to confirm coverage and any paperwork they need. Travel into Mexico is not allowed on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage does not extend there. Popular RV road trip from Othello routes include north to Grand Coulee Dam and the Okanogan, east to Coeur d'Alene (about 160 miles), and south to the Columbia River Gorge (about 150 miles). Confirm your route in writing through the RVezy message thread so everyone is aligned.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much will fuel cost for my Othello RV trip?
Fuel is usually your biggest variable cost, but Othello is a friendly place to budget. Most Class C motorhomes get about 8 to 12 mpg, Class B campervans hit 18 to 22 mpg, and a truck pulling a travel trailer averages 10 to 14 mpg. Washington gas prices typically run higher than the national average; check the EIA for current figures, with stations along SR-17 and in Moses Lake usually among the most competitive. A 300-mile weekend loop in a Class C generally runs about $120 to $170 in fuel at current prices. Top off in Othello or Moses Lake before heading into the refuge, since stations get sparse once you're west of town.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book a campground near Othello?
For Potholes State Park, book as early as possible for any summer weekend or the March Sandhill Crane Festival; Washington State Parks reservations open on a 9-month rolling window through the official reservation system. Private parks like MarDon Resort take direct bookings on their websites and tend to fill 2 to 4 months out for peak season. Midweek stays in April, May, or September are often available within a week of arrival. If Potholes State Park is full, check Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife's Seep Lakes Wildlife Area, where dispersed camping with a Discover Pass gives you a quieter, low-cost option.
washington.goingtocamp.com/What are driving conditions like around Othello?
Driving in and around Othello is refreshingly easy. The town sits on flat Columbia Basin farmland with wide rural highways (SR-17, SR-26, SR-262), light traffic, and almost no big-city congestion, which makes it a confidence-builder for motorhome rental Othello first-timers. Watch for crosswinds on open stretches near Potholes Reservoir, agricultural equipment on rural roads in summer, and occasional black ice or blowing snow December through February. Wildfire smoke can reduce visibility in late summer, so check WSDOT before you roll. Gravel roads inside the Columbia National Wildlife Refuge are well graded, but slow down for washboards and watch for mule deer at dawn and dusk.
wsdot.com/travel/real-time/mapWhat hookups and dump stations can I expect at Othello-area campgrounds?
You'll find solid infrastructure here. Potholes State Park offers utility sites with electric, water, and a dump station; MarDon Resort provides full hookups, laundry, showers, and potable water fills. Several private parks along Highway 262 and inside Othello also offer 30/50 amp service. For a quick dump and water fill without staying, MarDon Resort typically sells day-use dump service. If you're boondocking in the Seep Lakes area, plan your dump and freshwater stop at MarDon or Potholes State Park on the way back to town: those are the most reliable options within a short drive of Othello.
parks.wa.gov/find-parks/parks/potholes-state-parkWhat's actually inside the RVs available in Othello?
Plenty of comfort. Most RV rentals in Othello come fully equipped: a real bed (queen in most Class Cs and trailers), a kitchen with a fridge, stove, microwave, and sink, a bathroom with shower and toilet, dinette seating with seatbelts, heat, and roof air conditioning, which you'll appreciate in July when highs hit the upper 80s. Many include a generator or solar setup for boondocking near the refuge, plus an outdoor awning for shade. Class A and larger Class C models often add a TV, and some hosts provide Wi-Fi hotspots as an add-on. Check the listing's amenity list and message the host to confirm anything specific. Bring a small fan for sleeping; desert nights cool down nicely but airflow helps.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Othello%2C%20WashingtonWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
Hosts in Othello often offer handy add-ons: bedding and linen packages, camp chairs and tables, kitchen kits, bike racks, generators, propane refills, and even kayak or paddleboard rentals to use on Potholes Reservoir. Delivery and setup is a popular option, especially useful for the Sandhill Crane Festival when local lodging is tight. Mileage allowances vary, typically around 100 to 150 free miles per day, with overage fees often in the $0.30 to $0.50 range. Pickup is usually mid-afternoon and return mid-morning, but many hosts flex around your schedule. Message the host before booking to bundle add-ons and ask about timing; many will accommodate at no extra cost if their calendar allows.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Othello%2C%20WashingtonHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure. You pay through the RVezy platform with a credit or debit card at booking, and the security deposit is handled as a separate temporary hold on your card around the start of your trip, not a charge. The deposit amount is set per listing and is released after the host confirms the RV came back in good condition with the agreed tank and fuel levels. Never pay a host directly outside the platform; doing so voids your protection plan. Do a quick walk-around video at pickup and drop-off with your host: it's the easiest way to avoid deposit disputes and keeps your Othello RV rental experience smooth from start to finish.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksHow should I prep for cold-weather RV camping in Othello?
Winter RV camping in Othello can be magical, with frosted scablands and quiet campgrounds, and it's doable with the right setup. Filter for RVs with heated holding tanks, an enclosed underbelly, and a propane furnace; January highs average in the upper 30s and lows often dip into the 20s, with occasional colder snaps. Book a site with shore power at MarDon Resort or Potholes State Park so you can run the furnace without burning through propane. Winterize fresh water lines if temps will hold well below freezing; your host will walk you through this at pickup. Late fall and early winter are spectacular for waterfowl viewing at the refuge, and you'll often have campgrounds nearly to yourself.
