Campgrounds near Chattaroy, West Virginia
Chattaroy sits in Mingo County in southern West Virginia, on the Tug Fork River, inside the footprint of the Hatfield-McCoy Trails, one of the largest off-highway vehicle trail networks in the world. The region draws RV travelers almost entirely for trail riding, with more than 1,000 miles of ATV, UTV, and dirt bike routes open year-round.
Most campgrounds within a short drive of Chattaroy are purpose-built for ATV and side-by-side travelers rather than traditional tent campers. Trails 2 Paradise, Hatfield's Hideout, Coal Camp Lodging, Devil's Backbone Adventure Resort, and Devil Anse ATV Resort, LLC are all positioned near the Devil Anse, Buffalo Mountain, and Rockhouse trail systems, with several offering ride-in, ride-out access from their sites.
RV travelers do well here because riders can base out of a single site for several days and rotate through connected trail systems. Nearby ATV-friendly towns, including Matewan, Delbarton, and Williamson, provide fuel, groceries, and restaurants within easy reach.
Things to do around Chattaroy
ATV and UTV riding on the Hatfield-McCoy Trails is the primary draw. The Devil Anse, Buffalo Mountain, and Rockhouse systems connect to form over 300 miles of riding. Terrain ranges from beginner-friendly routes to technical singletrack, and trails are marked and rated by difficulty. Williamson is one of many ATV-friendly towns near the trail system, where riders can operate ATVs, UTVs, and dirt bikes on designated public roads from daylight to dark.
Matewan offers a walkable historic district tied to the Hatfield-McCoy feud and the Mine Wars era, including the West Virginia Mine Wars Museum. The Tug Fork River is fishable, and the surrounding hollows offer short hikes and photography stops.
Several local operators rent side-by-sides for riders who arrive without their own machines, and multiple resorts run guided tours geared to families and first-timers.

The Hatfield-McCoy Trails are open year-round, but conditions vary sharply by season. Spring brings frequent rainfall, and trail ride-through mud and standing water is common while stream crossings run high. Wildflowers and green-up peak from late April into May.
Summer is the busiest riding season. Highs run between about 79 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit from June to August with lows in the upper 50s to low 60s, and thick tree canopy keeps the trail systems cooler than the ridgelines. Weekend sites at the ride-in resorts fill weeks in advance around holidays and organized trail events.
Fall delivers comfortable riding weather. September is typically the driest month of the year, and rainfall stays low through November, while temperatures ease into the 60s and 70s and Appalachian leaf color peaks in mid to late October. Winter is short but cold and wet in the hollows, with snow and ice possible from December through February; many operators stay open, though water hookups at some RV sites are winterized.
How to book campgrounds and trail permits
Most campgrounds near Chattaroy are privately owned and book directly through their own websites or by phone. Peak-season weekends, holiday weekends, and event dates sell out weeks or months ahead, so RV travelers should reserve well before arriving. Trails 2 Paradise, Hatfield's Hideout, Coal Camp Lodging, Devil's Backbone Adventure Resort, and Devil Anse ATV Resort, LLC all handle their own reservations.
Each person accessing Hatfield-McCoy Trails is required to purchase a permit, passengers included. Permits can be purchased at more than 180 authorized vendor locations or any of the official trailheads. Devil Anse ATV Resort sells Hatfield-McCoy Trail permits on site along with maps. Permits are issued by year and expire on December 31 of the year in which they were purchased, and pricing differs for West Virginia residents and out-of-state riders.
What to expect on-site
Campgrounds around Chattaroy are geared to ATV travelers, which shapes the on-site experience. Expect gravel or concrete RV pads, electric hookups with water and sewer at most full-hookup sites, ATV wash areas, on-site permit sales, and bathhouses. At Devil Anse ATV Resort, all RV sites are 50-amp only and all are full hook-ups with electric, water, and septic. Larger resorts add extra amenities such as camp stores and laundry.
Roads into the hollows are narrow and winding, and cell coverage drops in and out. Large RVs should confirm access routes with the campground before arrival. Ride-in, ride-out sites let travelers leave the trailer parked and ride straight onto the trail system.
Evenings tend to be lively during peak season, with group riders returning at dusk. Quiet hours are enforced at most resorts, but travelers seeking a quieter setting should ask about site placement when booking.
