Camping near Fairlea, West Virginia
Fairlea sits in the Greenbrier Valley of southeastern West Virginia, just south of Lewisburg along US-219 and about three miles from Interstate 64. The town is best known as the home of the State Fair of West Virginia, and the surrounding area serves as a practical base for RV travel through the Allegheny highlands, the Greenbrier River corridor, and nearby Monroe County.
RV options within a short drive range from the large, easy-access fairgrounds property to river-focused private parks and a state-park campground on a small mountain lake. State Fair of West Virginia Campground offers full-hookup sites on the fairgrounds itself, while Greenbrier River Campground, Cabins and River Trips lines the Greenbrier River with sites, cabins, and an on-site outfitter. Moncove Lake State Park sits east of Fairlea near Gap Mills, and Summer Wind RV Overnight Park and Berry's Campground round out the closest options.
Lewisburg's historic downtown, restaurants, and services are within a few minutes of most sites, which makes the area workable for families and travelers new to RVing.
Things to do around Fairlea
The Greenbrier River is the region's headline attraction. Guided tubing, kayak, and canoe trips run out of Greenbrier River Campground, Cabins and River Trips, with float sections ranging from easy Class I water to livelier Class III stretches, plus livery and shuttle service. The Greenbrier River Trail, a 78-mile rail-trail, parallels the river and offers flat cycling and walking access from multiple points in the valley.
Moncove Lake State Park adds fishing, small-boat paddling, a swimming area, hiking, and wildlife viewing on a quiet mountain lake bordered by a wildlife management area. In Fairlea itself, the State Fair of West Virginia runs for ten days in mid-August with agricultural exhibits, grandstand concerts, and carnival rides. Historic Lewisburg, Greenbrier State Forest, and the New River Gorge are all within an easy drive.

The prime RV season runs roughly late April through October, when daytime highs sit in the comfortable 60s to low 80s Fahrenheit and area campgrounds are fully open. Greenbrier River Campground, Cabins and River Trips operates April through October, and Moncove Lake State Park's campground is open spring through fall, weather permitting. May and June bring the wettest months, along with wildflowers and strong river flows for paddling.
Mid-summer sees the busiest booking window in Fairlea because of the State Fair of West Virginia, held annually in mid-August. Fairgrounds hookup sites are limited during the fair itself and are managed by an email waitlist, so nearby private and state-park campgrounds fill early. Reserve well in advance for any August trip.
Fall brings cooler nights, lower humidity, and color through the Alleghenies from mid-October. Winter is cold and snowy at elevation, most state-park campgrounds close, and only a few private and fairgrounds sites remain accessible for pass-through RV travelers.
How to book campgrounds near Fairlea
Moncove Lake State Park uses the West Virginia State Parks reservation system, with bookings accepted online, by phone, or at the campground office. Weekend stays require a minimum of two consecutive nights on Friday and Saturday, single-night stays are allowed Sunday through Thursday, and the maximum stay is 14 nights.
State Fair of West Virginia Campground books sites directly through the fairgrounds. During the fair itself, hookup sites are handled by an email waitlist, and the on-site RV park opens for camping several days before the fair begins. Private campgrounds such as Greenbrier River Campground, Cabins and River Trips, Summer Wind RV Overnight Park, and Berry's Campground book directly through the operator by phone or website. For August trips, reserve as early as possible.
What to expect on the ground

State Fair of West Virginia Campground offers full hookup, partial hookup, and dry camping options with restrooms, bathhouses, a dump station, and a complimentary shuttle to the fair's main entrance during fair week. Greenbrier River Campground provides 30- and 50-amp service, water, sewer, cable TV, and WiFi at RV sites, plus fully equipped cabins.
Moncove Lake State Park is more rustic, with 48 sites (34 with electric hookups), a bathhouse, and a dump station rather than full hookups. Cell coverage is patchy in the surrounding hills, ticks are common in warmer months, and grocery, fuel, and services are concentrated in Lewisburg a short drive north of Fairlea.
