Campgrounds and RV parks near Mabscott, WV

The New River Gorge is the region's headline attraction, with hiking, rock climbing, and whitewater rafting on the New River. Guests staying at Army Camp or Grandview Sandbar can walk to the river for fishing and paddling, though currents demand caution and water levels can rise quickly after rain. At Little Beaver State Park, an 18-acre lake sits at the center of the park where anglers may fish year-round, and nearly 20 miles of trails challenge hikers. Boat rentals including kayaks, canoes, and paddleboats are available on-site, and private boats are not permitted on the lake. Beckley adds indoor options for rainy days, including the Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine and the Tamarack artisan center, both a short drive from Mabscott.

The Mabscott area sees four distinct seasons at elevation. Summers are warm and humid, usually a few degrees cooler than lower-elevation places within the state, and winters are generally cold and snowy with occasional intervening milder periods. Snowfall averages about 55.9 inches per season and mostly occurs from December through March, which limits RV access on unpaved park roads and closes the Little Beaver campground for the winter. Spring brings rising rivers and heavy rainfall. Flooding is a seasonal concern for low-lying riverside sites such as Grandview Sandbar and Army Camp, where the New River can rise quickly after storms. At Little Beaver State Park, the campground is open spring through fall, weather permitting. Summer is the wettest season and peak season for rafting, climbing, and family camping at Little Beaver. The camping season inside the national park generally runs April through October, with limited winter camping. Fall foliage typically peaks in mid to late October and pulls heavy weekend traffic, especially around Bridge Day.

National park sites near Mabscott are rustic. Most feature pit or vault toilets, picnic tables, and fire rings but lack running water, electric hookups, and shower facilities. Army Camp has 11 drive-in sites for RVs, campers, and tents, and only small RVs under 25 feet and medium RVs from 22 to 31.5 feet are recommended, while large RVs are not recommended. State park camping is more developed. Little Beaver has a bathhouse with flush toilets and hot showers, a laundry facility, and a dump station, and every site has a 40-foot parking pad, with 40 feet as the maximum RV length. Cell service is minimal to non-existent in most riverside camping areas. Guests should bring drinking water, printed maps, and cash for firewood at self-serve stations.
