Campgrounds near Mason, West Virginia
Mason is a small Ohio River town in Mason County, West Virginia, roughly ten miles upriver from Point Pleasant. The county sits between the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains and the Ohio River, with Point Pleasant, the county seat, at the confluence of the Ohio and Great Kanawha Rivers. RV travelers use Mason as a quiet base for river-town day trips, wildlife management areas, and the Mothman circuit in Point Pleasant.
Campground options split between the West Virginia side and southeastern Ohio just across the river. Kountry Resort Campground and Mothman Festival Campground sit closest to town, offering hookup sites suited to trailers and motorhomes. For a lake-and-forest setting, Forked Run State Park covers nearly 800 acres of forested hills with a lake and Ohio River frontage. Carthage Gap Campground near Coolville and Strouds Run State Park outside Athens round out the choices within a reasonable drive.
Expect a rural, river-valley feel rather than mountain scenery. Roads are two-lane and winding in places, and cell service can be patchy in the state parks.
Things to do near Mason
The Point Pleasant riverfront is the main draw. Tu-Endie-Wei State Park commemorates the 1774 Battle of Point Pleasant with a granite monument at the confluence of the Ohio and Kanawha Rivers. The Mothman Museum on Main Street is dedicated to the Mothman phenomenon, with exhibits tied to sightings reported in 1966 and 1967.
On the water, boating, kayaking, and fishing take place through the warmer months, with sportfishing targeting bass, walleye, sauger, catfish, and crappie. At the state parks, Forked Run has a lake for boating and a sand beach on the water, and Strouds Run maintains an extensive trail system for hikers and mountain bikers around Dow Lake. Families also visit Krodel Park in Point Pleasant, which has a playground and stocked lake.

The Mid-Ohio Valley has a humid subtropical climate with four distinct seasons. Summers are warm and humid, winters are short and cold, and skies are partly cloudy year round. Peak camping runs from late spring through early fall, with summer weekends and Mothman Festival weekend in mid-September being the busiest times to book.
Seasonal access varies by park. At Forked Run State Park, Area 1 is the only camping area open from November 1 through April 1, with the Area 1 showerhouse closed through the winter months while the dump station and water remain available. Ohio in-season rates apply April 1 through the first Sunday in December, with off-season camping at reduced amenity levels. Strouds Run State Park Campground is open year-round with 57 primitive campsites, two camper cabins, and a group camp.
Spring brings wildflowers and higher river levels; fall delivers hardwood color through the ridges. Winter camping is possible but limited to a handful of loops with reduced services.
How to book campgrounds near Mason
Reservation systems differ by park and state. Reservations at Forked Run State Park may be made up to six months in advance online through the Ohio State Parks reservation portal or by calling (866) 644-6727. The same phone line covers other Ohio state park sites in the region.
Strouds Run works differently. Regular campsites are first come, first serve with no reservations taken, and overnight guests must register and pay on arrival using an envelope found at the campground entrance. Two camper cabins and a group camp accommodating up to 150 people are available by reservation.
For Mothman Festival weekend, book Kountry Resort Campground, Mothman Festival Campground, and any Ohio-side site well in advance. The festival is held every third weekend in September, and nearby sites fill months out.
What to expect on the ground
Sites in this area lean toward simple hookup RV parks and rustic state-park loops rather than resort-style amenities. Forked Run has 143 campsites across five areas, with 79 electric and 64 non-electric sites; each has a paved parking pad, picnic table, and fire ring, plus showerhouses, vault latrines, a dump station, and playgrounds. Strouds Run has 57 non-electric sites with fire ring and picnic table, water spigots throughout, a dump station at the entrance, and pit toilets with no showers.
Cell coverage is inconsistent in the wooded valleys, and campers should expect spotty signal in low areas near the lakes. Bring drinking water, firewood from an approved source, and bug protection in summer. Pets are permitted at select sites in both state parks.

Winter can bring icy patches from late December through February, and summer thunderstorms can pop up fast.
