Campgrounds near New Martinsville
New Martinsville sits on the Ohio River in Wetzel County, in the northern panhandle of West Virginia. RV travelers use it as a base for the surrounding Appalachian foothills, the river valley, and a mix of state, county, and private campgrounds spread across three states within a short drive.
The closest developed option is Grand Vue Park in Moundsville, roughly a half-hour north, which operates 40 full-hookup RV sites with 30 and 50-amp service on a ridge above the Ohio Valley. West of the river, Sparkman Lake in Monroe County, Ohio, offers a small private campground with RV and tent sites around a stocked lake. Lone Pine Campground at Doddridge County Park, south of New Martinsville near West Union, adds 24 RV slips, 15 tent sites, and three yurts near the North Bend Rail Trail corridor.
For state-park camping, Barkcamp State Park in Belmont County, Ohio, and Ryerson Station State Park in Greene County, Pennsylvania, both sit within about an hour's drive.
Things to do around New Martinsville
Outdoor activity in the region centers on the Ohio River, forested ridges, and rail-trail corridors. Grand Vue Park draws families for its zipline course, hiking trails, mini-golf, swimming pool, and long-range Ohio Valley views from the ridge above Moundsville. Barkcamp State Park adds a swimming beach on 117-acre Belmont Lake, electric-motor boating, a mountain-bike loop, and a bridle trail along the shoreline.
Lone Pine Campground connects to the North Bend Rail Trail, a long rails-to-trails route popular with cyclists and hikers. Ryerson Station State Park offers a swimming pool, hiking trails, and stream fishing on a ridge near the West Virginia border. Nearby cultural stops include the Grave Creek Mound Archaeological Complex and the historic West Virginia Penitentiary in Moundsville.

The practical camping season in this part of the Ohio Valley runs roughly from April through October. Grand Vue Park's RV campground operates on a full schedule from April 1 through October 31, with only a limited number of sites and one bathhouse available from December 1 through April 1. Barkcamp State Park enters an off-peak season from November 1 to April 1, when the B loop closes but the showerhouse and dump station remain open.
Summer is peak season across the region, with weekends filling first at the state parks and at Grand Vue. Fall brings cooler nights, lower bug pressure, and hardwood color through the Appalachian hills, and Barkcamp hosts a September cast-iron cooking festival and an October fall festival.
Winter camping is possible at Ryerson Station State Park, which stays open year round, though the park notes that access is not guaranteed during severe winter weather.
How to book a campsite
Reservation systems vary by park. Barkcamp State Park is booked through the Ohio State Parks reservation system at reserveohio.com, with most sites bookable up to six months in advance. Ryerson Station State Park uses the Pennsylvania State Parks reservation system, where full-hookup, modern-electric, and modern tent sites can be booked up to 11 months out, and cottages require booking at least three days before arrival.
Grand Vue Park handles RV, tent, and cabin reservations directly through its office and the CampLife platform. Lone Pine Campground at Doddridge County Park takes reservations directly through the county park. Sparkman Lake books through Hipcamp and direct channels.
For summer weekends and holidays, book state-park sites as early as the reservation window allows.
What to expect on site
Sites in the New Martinsville area lean toward small, quiet campgrounds rather than large resorts. Grand Vue Park offers 40 back-in, full-hookup sites on gravel pads with 30 and 50-amp service, level enough for rigs up to 50 feet, plus two bath houses in season. Barkcamp State Park runs 150 electric sites, including a set with full hookups, with hot showers, a dump station, and pet-friendly loops, and its RV pads are 10-foot-wide cement.
Ryerson Station State Park has 35 sites with a mix of electric and full-hookup, but the access route on McNay Ridge Road is narrow, and Class A motorhomes and wider rigs are advised to use extreme caution. Cell service is spotty at Ryerson. Expect wooded, hilly terrain, gravel or paved pads, and modern shower houses at the developed parks listed here.
