Campgrounds near Oak Hill, West Virginia
Oak Hill sits on the southern rim of the New River Gorge in Fayette County, West Virginia, minutes from the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve. The town serves as a practical base for RV travelers headed to the gorge, the Lower New River whitewater runs, and the Gauley River release season upstream. Route 19 and the Fayette Station Road link the town to trailheads, overlooks, and the New River Gorge Bridge.
Camping options in the area split into two categories. Private resorts and outfitters cluster around the gorge rim and offer full hookups, showers, and rafting packages; ACE Adventure Center Campground, River Expeditions, Rivers Whitewater Rafting, Wood Mountain Campground, and Rifrafters Campground all fall into this group. Inside the national park, sites are primitive and free of charge.
Most RV travelers base at a private campground for hookups and dump access, then day-trip into the park for hiking, climbing, and rafting.
Things to do near Oak Hill
Whitewater rafting is the signature activity. The Lower New River runs class III to V through the gorge in summer, and the Gauley River release season upstream draws paddlers in the fall. Rivers Whitewater Rafting, River Expeditions, and ACE Adventure Center Campground all run guided trips from their properties.
Hiking and climbing are the other big draws. The Endless Wall, Long Point, and Grandview Rim trails deliver overlook views of the gorge and the New River Gorge Bridge. Sandstone Falls, at the southern end of the park, is accessible by boardwalk. Bridge Walk tours run beneath the arch of the bridge itself.
Families staying at resort-style properties can add ziplines, mountain biking, and lake swimming without leaving the campground.

Peak season runs from Memorial Day weekend through the Bridge Day festival in mid-October. Summer brings warm, humid days ideal for rafting the New River and swimming. Private campgrounds fill on summer Fridays and holiday weekends, and the park's first-come, first-served sites can be claimed by early afternoon.
Fall is the busiest paddling window. Scheduled Gauley River dam releases from Summersville Lake produce six weekends of big water starting the Friday after Labor Day, and outfitter campgrounds book up well in advance. Foliage peaks in mid to late October, overlapping with Bridge Day on the third Saturday of October.
Spring is cool, wet, and quiet, with strong flows on the New River and blooming rhododendron along the rim. Winter is cold and snowy at gorge elevations; many private campgrounds close or reduce services from late November through early March, while national park primitive sites remain open year-round.
How to book a campsite near Oak Hill
Private campgrounds around Oak Hill accept reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. ACE Adventure Center Campground, River Expeditions, Rivers Whitewater Rafting, Wood Mountain Campground, and Rifrafters Campground each handle their own bookings and generally require deposits, especially for Gauley season weekends and Bridge Day.
Inside New River Gorge National Park and Preserve, camping works differently. All park campgrounds are first-come, first-served year-round with no reservations accepted, and there are no camping fees. Group sites are the exception and require a special-use permit through the park's permit office.
For summer weekends and any Gauley release date, booking a private site eight to twelve weeks ahead is safer than gambling on a walk-up park site. Have a backup campground in mind if the park option is your first choice.
What to expect at Oak Hill campgrounds
Private resorts near Oak Hill are set up for RVs. ACE Adventure Center Campground offers RV sites with electric hookups, and neighboring outfitter campgrounds provide a mix of hookup sites, tent areas, bathhouses, and on-site dining. Sites are wooded and hilly; large rigs should confirm site length and access when booking.
National park campgrounds are primitive. Sites include a picnic table and fire ring, and vault toilets are the standard. Drinking water is not available at park campgrounds, cell service is limited at most, and access roads to several riverside sites are narrow and not suitable for large motorhomes, fifth wheels, or long travel trailers.
Expect train noise along river-adjacent sites, dark night skies, and cool evenings even in midsummer at rim elevations.

nps.gov/neri/planyourvisit/pets.htmCan the RV be delivered to my campground in Oak Hill?
Yes, RV delivery in Oak Hill is offered by many local hosts, and it's the easiest way to start a New River Gorge trip. The host drives the RV to your campsite at places like Adventures on the Gorge, Rifrafters Campground, or Babcock State Park, levels it, hooks up power and water, and walks you through every system before handing over the keys. That means no towing, no backing into a tight site, and no figuring out hookups on your own. Use the Delivery filter on RVezy to see hosts who offer this service, and check each listing for the delivery fee, which usually scales with distance from Oak Hill.

For full hookups and reservations, Rifrafters and Adventures on the Gorge are your easiest bets. Pro tip: reserve Babcock 6 or more months ahead for fall foliage weekends, it's one of the most photographed spots in West Virginia.
wvstateparks.com/park/babcock-state-park/When is the best time to visit Oak Hill, WV in an RV?
Oak Hill is a true four-season destination, and there's a sweet spot for every kind of traveler. Late April through June brings 65 to 80°F days, blooming rhododendrons, and prime whitewater on the Gauley and New Rivers. July and August are warm and humid (highs around 82°F) and best for swimming at Summersville Lake. September and October are the crown jewel: crisp 60 to 75°F days, fiery foliage, and Bridge Day on the third Saturday of October when BASE jumpers leap from the New River Gorge Bridge. Winter is quieter with lows in the 20s but great for budget travelers. For the best campervan rental Oak Hill experience, aim for late September through mid-October.
weather.gov/rlx/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving around Oak Hill?
You're going to do great, even if this is your first time renting an RV. Every Oak Hill host gives a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through driving tips, slide-outs, generator, water systems, and waste tanks. The roads around Oak Hill are well-paved, and US-19 (the main route over the New River Gorge Bridge) is wide, modern, and RV-friendly. Stick to the main highways like US-19, I-64, and WV-16 and avoid narrow backroads into hollows. Pro tip: if city or mountain driving makes you nervous, book a host who offers delivery and setup at your campground. You can rent an RV in Oak Hill, WV and never have to drive it yourself.
transportation.wv.gov/highways/Pages/default.aspxWhat happens if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
You're never on your own. RVezy's customer support team is available before, during, and after your trip too. Cell service is solid in Oak Hill and along US-19, though it can dip in the deeper sections of the New River Gorge, so download offline maps before you head into the canyon.

Cross-border travel into Virginia, Kentucky, and Ohio is fully allowed on RVezy rentals. Note: travel to Mexico is not permitted. wvtourism.com/things-to-do/scenic-drives/What should I budget for fuel on an Oak Hill RV trip?
Fuel is one of your biggest variables, so let's make it predictable. Most travel trailers tow at 10 to 14 MPG (your truck's mileage), campervans get 16 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes average 8 to 12 MPG, and Class A motorhomes 6 to 10 MPG. West Virginia gas prices typically run a bit below the national average, often around $3.00 to $3.40 per gallon. The Go-Mart and Sheetz stations along US-19 in Oak Hill and Fayetteville are RV-friendly with high canopies and easy pull-through access. Pro tip: fuel up before heading into the New River Gorge itself, stations get sparse once you drop into the canyon roads toward Thurmond or Cunard.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Oak Hill?
Book early and you'll lock in the best sites. For Babcock State Park and other West Virginia State Parks, reservations open up to 13 months in advance through wvstateparks.com, and fall foliage weekends (late September to mid-October) and Bridge Day in October sell out 6 to 9 months out. National Park Service sites at Army Camp, Stone Cliff, and Grandview are first-come, first-served, so arrive by Thursday for a weekend spot in peak season. Private parks like Rifrafters and Adventures on the Gorge book through their own websites and fill up fast for summer weekends. Pro tip: midweek arrivals (Sunday through Tuesday) almost always have openings, even in October.
wvstateparks.com/reservations/What are driving conditions like around Oak Hill, WV?
Driving around Oak Hill is friendlier than you might expect for Appalachia. US-19, the main north-south route, is a four-lane divided highway with the famous New River Gorge Bridge (the longest steel-arch bridge in the Western Hemisphere) and gentle grades suitable for any RV. I-64 to the south is wide and modern. The roads to watch are WV-82 down to Fayette Station and the narrow Cunard and Thurmond access roads into the gorge, which are steep, twisty, and best avoided in larger Class A motorhomes. Winter (December to March) can bring ice and snow, so check 511.wv.gov before traveling. Summer is generally clear; afternoon thunderstorms pop up but pass quickly.
wv511.org/What hookups and amenities will I find at Oak Hill area campgrounds?
You'll find a great mix. Full-hookup sites (water, 30/50-amp electric, sewer) are standard at Rifrafters Campground, Adventures on the Gorge, and Chestnut Creek Campground. Babcock State Park offers electric and water hookups but no on-site sewer, with a dump station available at the campground entrance. National Park Service sites along the New River (Army Camp, Stone Cliff, Glade Creek) are primitive: no hookups, vault toilets, and you'll need to dump and refill back in Oak Hill or Fayetteville. The Go Mart in Fayetteville and Rifrafters both offer public dump stations. Pro tip: fill your fresh water tank before heading into NPS sites, and bring a water filter, mountain water can have a strong mineral taste.
nps.gov/neri/planyourvisit/campgrounds.htmWhat features and amenities come with Oak Hill RV rentals?
Most RVs on RVezy in the Oak Hill area come ready for adventure: queen or king bed, full kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, sink, and cookware, a bathroom with toilet and shower, roof AC, furnace, and dinettes that convert to extra sleeping space. Larger Class C and Class A motorhomes typically include a TV, and many hosts now offer Wi-Fi hotspots or Starlink, perfect for the spotty cell zones in the New River Gorge. Generators are standard in most motorhomes for boondocking at NPS sites. All seats designed for travel have seatbelts. Listing photos show exactly what each RV includes, and you can always message the host with specific questions before booking.
nps.gov/neri/planyourvisit/campgrounds.htmWhat add-ons can I get with my Oak Hill RV rental?
Hosts in Oak Hill offer genuinely useful add-ons to make your New River Gorge trip easier. Common options include camping chairs and outdoor tables, bedding and linen packages, kitchen and cookware kits, generators, bike racks, kayak or paddleboard racks (a big plus for Summersville Lake), portable grills, and propane fills. Delivery and setup is the most popular add-on locally, typically priced based on distance from Oak Hill. Mileage policies vary by host: some include 100 to 150 free miles per day, while others offer RV rental with unlimited mileage for a flat rate. Pickup is usually at the host's address, but many will meet you at the campground. Pro tip: bundle delivery, setup, and a linen package and you'll arrive to a fully made-up RV ready to enjoy.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Oak%20Hill%2C%20West%20VirginiaHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure. You pay through the RVezy platform with a credit or debit card when you book, never directly to the host, which protects both sides. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment before your trip and released after the RV is returned in the same condition. The deposit amount is set per listing and shown clearly before you confirm. To avoid any issues, do a quick video walkthrough with your host at pickup and drop-off, return the RV with the fuel and propane levels you started with, and empty the waste tanks if your host requires it (many include a dump fee add-on if you would rather skip that step). Easy, transparent, and stress-free.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Oak Hill during winter?
Yes, and winter is a quiet, budget-friendly season for an Oak Hill RV trip. Many local hosts keep their RVs available year-round, often at lower nightly rates from December through March. Daytime highs typically average in the 40s and nights can drop into the 20s, so look for RVs with heated holding tanks, a working furnace, and the ability to plug into shore power at campgrounds that stay open year-round (Rifrafters and Adventures on the Gorge both offer winter options). Winter brings frozen waterfalls along Glade Creek and quiet hiking on Long Point Trail. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm winterization status and ask which tanks are heated, that one question sets you up for a cozy, trouble-free cold-weather trip.
