Campgrounds and RV parks near Prosperity, WV

The main draw is New River Gorge National Park and Preserve, with whitewater rafting, climbing, hiking, and the Grandview overlooks a short drive from Prosperity. Anglers can fish year-round on the 18-acre lake at Little Beaver State Park, and Lake Stephens in the Raleigh County Parks system adds a 272-acre mountain lake with a beach, marina, and swimming. Beckley itself has the Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine and the Tamarack marketplace of West Virginia crafts and food. Families staying at Grandview Sandbar or Army Camp can pair paddling and river access with hikes to Grandview's canyon-rim viewpoints and trails. Biking, disc golf, and paved lake loops at Little Beaver round out easy day options when the weather turns.

Late spring through early fall is the core RV season around Prosperity. State-park camping at Little Beaver runs spring through fall, weather permitting, and Lake Stephens is open May 1 through October 31. Summer brings the warmest weather and the busiest bookings for rafting outfitters and campground sites near the gorge. Spring and summer can be wet, with July typically the rainiest month around Beckley. The New River rises quickly after heavy rain, and low-lying riverside sites at Army Camp and Grandview Sandbar can flood, so campers should watch forecasts and be ready to relocate to higher ground. Fall delivers cooler nights, drier weather, and strong color across the surrounding Appalachian ridges, making September and October popular. Winter is cold and snowy at this elevation, with average seasonal snowfall well over four feet, and most state and county campgrounds close, though the national park's primitive campgrounds remain open year-round with limited services.

Expect a mix of full-service and primitive camping. Little Beaver State Park has 46 sites total, 30 with water and electric hookups and 16 with water only, plus a bathhouse, laundry, and dump station. Lake Stephens offers full-hookup RV sites along with tent camping and cabins. Access roads in the area are typical of southern West Virginia: narrow, curvy, and hilly, so drive rentals carefully. Army Camp has 11 drive-in sites along the New River suited to RVs under about 25 feet, with vault toilets and no drinking water or hookups. Grandview Sandbar is a small riverside campground with vault toilets and no potable water. Cell service can be spotty at wooded and river-bottom sites. Bears are present, so store food and trash properly, and keep pets leashed at all park and campground areas.
