Campgrounds and RV parks near Stanaford, WV

Stanaford sits in Raleigh County in southern West Virginia, just north of Beckley and within a short drive of the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve. The location puts RV renters within easy reach of both federal campgrounds along the New River and state and county parks in the surrounding Appalachian plateau. Options range from developed state park sites with hookups to primitive federal sites along the river. Little Beaver State Park is a 562-acre day-use park that features many outdoor recreational opportunities, with an 18-acre lake at its center where anglers may fish year-round and nearly 20 miles of trails. The campground includes 46 sites, with 30 electric sites and 16 non-electric sites, and a bath house and laundry facility are available. Only 25 of the 46 camping spots are reservable, with the remainder first-come, first-served. Closer to the river, Army Camp and Grandview Sandbar are National Park Service sites that skew primitive. Raleigh County Parks and Wood Mountain Campground round out the options for travelers who want to stay closer to Beckley amenities while still exploring the gorge.

Reservation systems vary by operator. West Virginia State Park sites, including Little Beaver, book through the state parks reservation portal. Campsites can be reserved online at any time, by phone, or at the campground office, with a two-night minimum on weekends and a one-night minimum Sunday through Thursday. Only 25 of the 46 sites are reservable, with the rest first-come, first-served, so arriving early matters on holidays and weekends. National Park Service campgrounds along the New River operate differently. Army Camp does not offer reservations through Recreation.gov. Sites are first-come, first-served and there is no fee for use of the site. Grandview Sandbar follows the same free, first-come model. Private and county campgrounds such as Wood Mountain Campground and Raleigh County Parks handle bookings directly through their own websites or by phone.
