Campgrounds and RV parks near Williamson, WV

Williamson sits in Mingo County in the Tug Valley of southern West Virginia, on the Kentucky border. The town functions primarily as a base for the Hatfield-McCoy Trails, a large off-highway vehicle network in southern West Virginia. The entire city is a designated ATV-friendly community, which lets riders travel local streets between lodging, restaurants, fuel, and the trailheads. RV renters typically choose properties built around trail access rather than traditional wooded campgrounds. Options near Williamson include Trails 2 Paradise, Hatfield's Hideout, Coal Camp Lodging, Devil's Backbone Adventure Resort, and Devil Anse ATV Resort, LLC. Most cluster along the Buffalo Mountain and Devil Anse trail systems, which connect to Rockhouse as part of a broader network spanning nine counties. The surrounding terrain is steep Appalachian ridgeline cut by narrow hollows and the Tug Fork River. Sites tend to be gravel pads with hookups oriented toward trailered machines, rather than open-field or lakeside camping.

Most campgrounds near Williamson are privately owned and book directly through their own websites or by phone. There is no central reservation portal for the Hatfield-McCoy area, so renters typically compare sites one property at a time. RV pads with full hookups are limited compared to cabins, so those spots go first. Every driver and passenger on the Hatfield-McCoy Trails must also hold an individual trail permit, purchased separately from lodging. No one under the age of six is permitted on the trails at all. Permits are sold at trailhead facilities, HMT welcome centers, and authorized vendors in the Williamson area, and each permit is valid through December 31 of the year it is issued. For peak weekends, including holiday weekends and the annual National Trailfest, booking two to three months out is realistic for a preferred site.
