The Kettle Moraine State Forest is the main draw. Visitors can hike or bike sections of the Ice Age National Scenic Trail, a long-distance route that follows the edge of the last glacier across Wisconsin, and the Northern Unit adds mountain-bike trails and cross-country ski loops in season. Food/drink concessions and kayak/canoe rentals are available seasonally at Mauthe Lake. Rainy-day options include the Henry S. Reuss Ice Age Visitor Center, which serves as an orientation point for the Northern Unit and the surrounding glacial landscape. Downtown West Bend and Hartford, both a short drive south, add restaurants, groceries, and RV supply stops.

Southeastern Wisconsin has a humid continental climate with four sharp seasons. Winters are cold and snowy, summers are warm and humid, and both spring and fall bring rapid weather changes. West Bend averages 43 inches of snow per year, and the coldest stretch runs from January into February. Peak camping season runs Memorial Day through Labor Day. July has an average maximum temperature of 27°C and is the warmest month of the year, and summer brings frequent afternoon thunderstorms in this part of Wisconsin. Popular electric sites at Kettle Moraine, especially waterfront ones, book out months in advance. Shoulder seasons are quieter. May and September offer mild days, fewer bugs than midsummer, and more site availability. Winter camping is limited but possible: Mauthe Lake campground is open for camping year-round, and Ottawa Lake campground is the only year-round campground in the Kettle Moraine Southern Unit. In winter, a limited number of sites are plowed. Water is available from a spigot near campsite 338.

At Wisconsin state properties, campers should proceed directly to their reserved campsite after the designated check-in time of 3 p.m. Campers will be automatically checked in through their reservation. No camping party may set up or take down a camping unit between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. DNR staff may periodically stop by campsites to verify check-in. Campers should keep a copy of their reservation on hand or available on a mobile device for staff to verify the reservation. Only certified firewood or firewood originating from within 10 miles of the park is allowed into the park, a rule aimed at limiting the spread of invasive pests. Fires are allowed in fire rings and grills only. Electric hookups are common at both private parks and the larger state campgrounds, but full hookups with sewer are typically found only at private RV parks. A sanitary dump station and recycling/garbage station are provided for registered campers at Mauthe Lake, and Ottawa Lake offers the same.
