Campgrounds near Ashippun
Ashippun is an unincorporated community in Dodge County, Wisconsin, positioned between Milwaukee and Madison and within short driving distance of the Kettle Moraine State Forest and the Horicon Marsh wildlife area. The surrounding landscape is glacial: rolling drumlins, kettle lakes, and slow rivers including the Rock and the Bark, all of which support a mix of private campgrounds and state properties suitable for RV travel.
Private options within roughly thirty to forty minutes include The Playful Goose Campground of the Horicon Marsh, Bark River Campground and Resort near Jefferson, Circle K Campground in the Southern Kettle Moraine near Palmyra, Fairgrounds RV Park, and River Bend RV Resort. These parks skew family-oriented, with pools, playgrounds, and river or pond access, and most operate on a seasonal calendar centered on the warm months.
For state-managed camping, the Northern and Southern Units of the Kettle Moraine State Forest offer the closest reservable sites through the Wisconsin DNR system. The Horicon Marsh itself does not have a campground on the refuge or wildlife area.
Things to do near Ashippun
Horicon Marsh is the region's headline attraction. At more than 33,000 acres, it is one of the largest freshwater marshes in the United States and a critical rest stop for migrating ducks and Canada geese, with hundreds of bird species recorded. Visitors can drive the auto tour, walk the Egret Trail floating boardwalk, or paddle the Rock River through the core of the marsh.
Closer to camp, The Playful Goose Campground of the Horicon Marsh sits directly on the Rock River with fishing, canoeing, and an indoor heated pool, while Bark River Campground and Resort offers canoeing and fishing on the Bark River plus a full-service restaurant and convenience store in its lodge. Circle K Campground provides access to Southern Kettle Moraine hiking and biking trails. The Glacial Drumlin State Trail and Jefferson County Fair Park are also within easy reach.

Most private campgrounds near Ashippun follow this pattern: Bark River Campground and Resort typically operates from early April through late October, and The Playful Goose Campground of the Horicon Marsh runs daily through early September before shifting to weekends-only into early October.
Spring brings the northbound goose and duck migration through Horicon Marsh and can also bring waterlogged sites after heavy rain. Summer is peak family season, with warm days, frequent thunderstorms, and the strongest demand on weekends and holidays. Fall delivers the return migration, cooler nights, and color through the Kettle Moraine.
Winter camping is limited. The Wisconsin State Park System keeps some sites open through the cold months, though camping seasons vary by property. Most private parks near Ashippun close after October, and the Horicon National Wildlife Refuge auto tour shuts to vehicles before the state deer gun season in late November.

Jacqueline and Chris were very responsive and even set up things as they knew we had a lot of children with a wide age range. Camper was very clean, easy to use and everything was explained upon pick up. Will definitely be renting from them again.

How to book a campsite
Private campgrounds near Ashippun are booked directly with the operator. The Playful Goose Campground of the Horicon Marsh, Bark River Campground and Resort, Circle K Campground, Fairgrounds RV Park, and River Bend RV Resort each handle their own reservations by phone or through their websites, and several also list on third-party platforms. Call ahead to confirm site type, big-rig access, and hookup levels, since some parks separate full-hookup, water and electric, and honey-wagon-service sites.
For state properties such as the Kettle Moraine State Forest, reservations run through the Wisconsin DNR system at wisconsin.goingtocamp.com or 1-888-947-2757. Reservations can be made up to 11 months before the planned occupancy date, and all standard sites at state parks, forests, and recreation areas are reservable, with no first-come, first-served option. A vehicle admission pass is required in addition to the site fee, and nonresident campers pay an added nightly surcharge.
What to expect
Expect a mix of open farmland, wetlands, and glacial forest. Sites at private parks in the area tend toward flat, grassy pads with a blend of shaded and open exposures. Bark River Campground and Resort offers electric sites, showers and flush toilets, a dump station, a swimming pool, and canoeing on the Bark River. The Playful Goose Campground of the Horicon Marsh offers sites with water, electric, and sewer plus an indoor heated pool and river access. Circle K Campground caters heavily to seasonal campers, so short-stay availability can be tighter on peak weekends.
Cell coverage from major carriers is generally reliable across Dodge and Jefferson counties. Mosquitoes and biting flies can be persistent near the marsh and river bottoms in early summer, so pack repellent. Deer, wild turkey, and a broad range of waterbirds are routinely seen from campsites in the region.
