Campgrounds and RV parks near Brooklyn, WI

Water recreation anchors most trips. Lake Kegonsa State Park provides a swimming beach, reservable picnic shelters, a boat launch, and hiking trails winding through oak woodlands, prairies, and wetlands. The park is known for its campground, beach, and approximately 5 miles of hiking trails, and offers swimming, fishing, water-skiing, sailing, and a boat landing. The Sugar River is the other big draw. Sweet Minnihaha Campground sits directly on the river, and tubing, canoeing, and kayaking down the Sugar River are popular, with tube, canoe, and kayak rentals plus free shuttle service available on site. Anglers target walleye and bass from the banks of the Sugar River or from a canoe. Day trips from Brooklyn reach the Madison lakes, the Swiss-themed village of New Glarus, and the Badger State Trail for cycling. Green County dairy country adds cheese factories and farm stops that work well as afternoon breaks between campground activities.

The core RV season in south-central Wisconsin runs from late spring through mid-fall. Lake Kegonsa State Park's campgrounds are open from May 1 through October 31. Showers and flush toilets may be unavailable in early May and late October due to seasonal water system shutdowns. Summer is peak season. Weekends around Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, and Labor Day fill first, especially waterfront and electric sites. Private parks near the Sugar River book heavily around holiday weekends and summer festivals. Fall brings cooler nights, changing hardwood color, and thinner crowds through October. Winter closes most private campgrounds. Lake Kegonsa State Park itself is open 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. year-round for day use, cross-country skiing, and ice fishing, though camping amenities wind down after the campground season ends.

Terrain in the area is gently rolling farmland, hardwood groves, and glacial lakes. Interior roads at state and private parks are generally paved or well-graded gravel and accommodate typical rental RVs, though some older private parks have tighter sites and lower tree canopy. At Lake Kegonsa, expect a wooded setting. Sites 1-9 and 87-93 are partially wooded while the remaining sites are heavily wooded, twenty-nine sites feature electrical hookups including two designated accessible sites, and the campground accommodates tents, pop-ups, trailers, and RVs with one wheeled camping unit allowed per site. Facilities include flush toilets and showers near the entrance, three vault toilets, drinking water at multiple locations, and a sanitary dump station between the family and group camping areas. Cell coverage is generally good near Brooklyn and along US-14 and I-39/90. Mosquitoes and ticks are active from late spring through early fall, so bring repellent and check for ticks after hikes.
