Campgrounds near Dane, Wisconsin
Dane is a small village in Dane County, Wisconsin, roughly a 20-minute drive north of Madison and within easy reach of Lake Wisconsin, the Wisconsin River, and the southern edge of the Baraboo Hills. The area sits in a humid continental climate zone with strong seasonal contrasts, which shapes when private RV parks open and when state properties see peak demand.
RV travelers typically base out of private campgrounds in the Lodi, Poynette, and Lake Wisconsin corridor, then day-trip to Madison, Devil's Lake State Park, and the Wisconsin Dells. Nearby options include Smokey Hollow Campground in Lodi, along with Madison Campground, Crystal Lake Campground and RV Park, Lake Wisconsin Campground, and Buddy's River Resort.
Most campgrounds in the area cater to families and offer full hookups, cabins, and lake or river access. Standard campsites at all Wisconsin state parks, forests and recreation areas are completely reservable, with no first-come, first-served standard campsites, while private parks run their own reservations and seasonal calendars.
Things to do near Dane
Water is the main draw. Lake Wisconsin and the Wisconsin River support boating, paddling, and fishing for walleye, bass, and panfish, and several nearby campgrounds sit directly on the water. The Merrimac Ferry, a free state-run car ferry across Lake Wisconsin, is a short drive north and makes an easy family outing.
Hiking and biking options include segments of the Ice Age National Scenic Trail, the bluffs at Devil's Lake State Park, and the paved trail networks around Madison. Families often pair a camping stay with a day at the Wisconsin Dells water parks or the Henry Vilas Zoo in Madison.
On-site amenities at family parks like Smokey Hollow Campground typically include a swimming pond with sand beach, jumping pillow, mini golf, and organized activities, and lakeside parks such as Lake Wisconsin Campground and Crystal Lake Campground and RV Park add water access and swimming areas.

The core RV season in south-central Wisconsin runs from mid-April through late October. Smokey Hollow Campground in Lodi is open from April 1 to October 31, and most other private campgrounds in the Dane area follow a similar window, with Memorial Day through Labor Day being the busiest stretch. Weekends in July and August book out fastest, and holiday weekends carry minimum-stay requirements at both private and state parks.
Spring brings variable weather, higher river levels, and mosquitoes near wetlands, but also open availability. Fall delivers reliable color from late September into mid-October, cooler nights, and easier weekend bookings once school returns. This is often the best window for RV travelers who want space and quiet.
Winter camping is limited. A subset of Wisconsin state properties remain open for winter camping with reduced services, but nearly all private RV parks in the immediate Dane area shut down water and full-hookup service between November and March.

How to book
Standard campsites at all Wisconsin state parks, forests, and recreation areas are completely reservable, with no first-come, first-served standard campsites. Camping reservations can be made on the same day of arrival or up to 11 months before the planned occupancy date, online or by calling 1-888-947-2757 through the state's central system at wisconsin.goingtocamp.com. Bookings are released at 9:00 AM Central Time, and for popular summer weekends at nearby state properties like Devil's Lake, electric sites are typically claimed within minutes of the release window opening.
Private campgrounds near Dane, including Smokey Hollow Campground, Madison Campground, Crystal Lake Campground and RV Park, Lake Wisconsin Campground, and Buddy's River Resort, take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. For July, August, and holiday weekends, book at least two to three months out. Shoulder-season midweek stays can often be secured within a week or two of arrival.
What to expect on site
Expect a mix of wooded sites, open pull-throughs, and lakeside spots depending on the park. Smokey Hollow Campground operates as a family-oriented resort with full hookups for RVs up to 50 feet and leans toward high-energy weekends with themed activities, a swimming pond, jumping pillow, and mini golf. Quieter options along the river and lake favor fishing and water access over programming.
Hookup availability varies by park. Full-hookup sites with 30 or 50 amp service are common at family-oriented parks, while some sites at smaller operations may be water and electric only, with a shared dump station. Confirm site length, hookup type, and any big-rig restrictions before booking.
Wisconsin state properties require a vehicle admission pass on all motor vehicles, purchased at the property or in advance, with a 12-month pass or a daily pass valid for the date of issue. Pets are welcome at most private parks and on designated loops at state parks, with standard leash rules.
