Campgrounds and RV parks near Hingham, WI

Lake Michigan is the main draw. Kohler-Andrae State Park features the Creeping Juniper Nature Trail, a cordwalk through rolling sand dunes, forested dune trails, and a boardwalk running parallel to the lake. Swimming, beachcombing and shoreline fishing are all within a short drive of Hingham. Harrington Beach State Park adds a white cedar and hardwood swamp, restored wetland ponds and a scenic limestone quarry lake, with camping, sunbathing, picnicking, hiking, birding, fishing and monthly public viewings at the on-site observatory. Anglers can fish from the shore of Quarry Lake, though swimming there is not permitted. Motorsport fans have Elkhart Lake's Road America on the doorstep. The 4.048-mile, 14-turn road course sits on 640 park-like acres and hosts race weekends throughout the warm season. The Old Plank Road Trail and Kettle Moraine State Forest round out the options.

The RV season runs roughly May through October, with peak demand in July and August. State park campgrounds along Lake Michigan operate on different calendars: the Kohler-Andrae campground is open all year, with family sites 3, 15, 19, 22, 23, 28, 32, 33 and Group sites A and B plowed for winter camping, while Harrington Beach State Park's 69-unit family campground is open from the first Wednesday in May into October. Shoulder-season trips in May and September are quieter and cooler, with lake breezes keeping temperatures moderate. Race weekends at Road America drive spikes in demand across every campground in the area, and private resorts near Elkhart Lake and Plymouth book out weeks ahead for those dates. Winter travel is limited. During the warm weather season, showers, flush toilets and laundry facilities are available at both state parks, and although campsites do not have water or sewer hookups, a trailer dump station and a freshwater fill-up station are provided at each park. Off-season visitors should expect reduced services and snow on trails.

Check-in at Wisconsin state parks is straightforward but time-gated. Campsite check-in time is 3 p.m. with no early check-in allowed, and check-out is 1 p.m. Sites are limited to one wheeled camping unit, all wheels of the unit must remain on the campsite blacktop pad, no more than two motor vehicles are allowed per site, and additional vehicles may be parked in designated overflow lots. Expect basic but well-kept facilities: fire ring, picnic table, and access to a shared dump station rather than in-site water or sewer hookups at state park sites. Firewood from out of state or from more than 10 miles away is not allowed on Wisconsin State Park or Forest properties, so plan to buy firewood on site or nearby. Private resorts near Plymouth and Elkhart Lake typically offer full hookups, laundry, pools and family programming, with a more developed campground feel than the state parks.
