Camping near Lake Wisconsin
Lake Wisconsin is a dammed section of the Wisconsin River in south-central Wisconsin, sitting between Sauk and Columbia counties and roughly a half-hour drive from Wisconsin Dells and Baraboo. The lake is a popular boating, fishing, and pontoon destination, and it is crossed by the free, state-run Merrimac Ferry, which links Sauk and Columbia counties across the Wisconsin River and generally operates April through November, with a single crossing of about seven minutes.
RV renters use the area as a base for two very different experiences: quieter lake camping around Merrimac, Okee, Lodi, and Poynette, and the busier attractions cluster to the north around the Dells. The ferry is close to the head of Lake Wisconsin, as well as regional recreation areas, including Devil's Lake and Wisconsin Dells, which puts most parks and activities within a short drive of any campground on the lake.
Private campgrounds dominate the immediate shoreline. Crystal Lake Campground and RV Park, Lake Wisconsin Campground, Merry Macs Campground, Smokey Hollow Campground, and Sky High Camping Resort are the closest options and cover a mix of full-hookup RV sites, cabins, and family-oriented resorts.
Things to do around Lake Wisconsin
Water recreation is the main draw. The lake supports boating, water-skiing, tubing, and fishing for walleye, bass, and panfish, and public launches at Okee, Lodi, and Merrimac give RV travelers easy access. Riding the Merrimac Ferry itself is a common day-trip activity for families, and the ferry also helps Ice Age Trail hikers cross the water.
Devil's Lake State Park sits just west of Merrimac and offers the region's best hiking, with quartzite bluffs, swim beaches, and long trail loops. Wisconsin Dells, about a half-hour north, adds indoor and outdoor waterparks, boat tours, and go-karts. Closer to home, campgrounds like Merry Macs Campground and Sky High Camping Resort run on-site pools, mini-golf, and organized weekend activities that give kids something to do when the family is not on the water.

June - August
79° / 61°F 100 mmPeak bookings; sites fill months out.

- winter
December - February
27° / 12°F 32 mmCold and snowy; most lake campgrounds closed.
The camping season here is short and clearly defined. Reservations are essential during the peak season from May through October, with most private campgrounds in the Merrimac area closing by mid-October. July and early August are the busiest weeks, driven by warm lake temperatures, summer festivals, and school vacation, so weekend sites at the top private parks often fill months out.
Late spring and early fall are the easier windows for RV renters. Water is cooler in May and again after Labor Day, but sites open up, traffic on WIS 113 lightens, and the ferry is still running. The Merrimac Ferry generally operates April through November, though early and late in that window operations depend on ice and weather.
Winter effectively closes the private campground scene around the lake. Most shoreline parks are seasonal, and travelers who want to camp in the colder months rely on the Wisconsin State Park System, where not all properties offer camping during non-summer months, camping seasons vary by property, and during winter some campsites may be plowed as staffing allows.

How to book a site
For private campgrounds on Lake Wisconsin, book directly with the property. Crystal Lake Campground and RV Park, Lake Wisconsin Campground, Merry Macs Campground, Smokey Hollow Campground, and Sky High Camping Resort each take reservations by phone or through their own websites, and summer holiday weekends are typically the first dates to sell out. Full-hookup and pull-through sites go before back-in electric-only sites, so RV renters with larger rigs should lock in dates as soon as travel plans firm up.
For nearby state parks such as Devil's Lake, use the Wisconsin DNR reservation system. Camping reservations are required and can be made up to 11 months in advance of the planned date of occupancy, campers must make a reservation before setting up on any site, and reservations can be made online or by calling 1-888-947-2757.
What to expect on arrival
Roads into the Lake Wisconsin campgrounds are paved but often narrow and hilly, especially the county highways around Merrimac and Okee. Renters driving larger Class A or Class C motorhomes should map the route in advance, since hazardous materials, including but not limited to agricultural nitrogen, propane in excess of 100 pounds, and fuel in excess of 100 gallons, are not allowed on the ferry, and the state-highway detour adds meaningful drive time.
Site styles vary widely. Waterfront private parks lean family-focused, with pools, playgrounds, and evening activities, while smaller campgrounds farther from the shoreline are quieter and more RV-oriented. Full hookups, 30- and 50-amp service, and dump stations are common at the larger properties; some smaller sites offer electric and water only.
Expect mosquitoes near the water in June and July, standard Wisconsin thunderstorm risk on summer afternoons, and heavy weekend traffic at the ferry landings during peak season.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Lake%20WisconsinWhat do I need to legally rent and drive an RV around Lake Wisconsin?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Lake Wisconsin. Wisconsin does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special endorsement for personal motorhomes or travel trailers, even larger Class A rigs. You'll need to be 25 or older to book on RVezy, and ID verification happens quickly through the platform during checkout. Visiting from abroad? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) along with your home license. Once you're verified, you're ready to cruise Highway 113, hop the Merrimac Ferry, and start your Lake Wisconsin RV trip with confidence.
wisconsindot.gov/Pages/dmv/license-drvs/how-to-apply/dr-lic.aspxIs protection included when I rent an RV in Lake Wisconsin?
Yes, every RV rental in Lake Wisconsin booked through RVezy automatically includes a protection package plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can focus on enjoying the shoreline rather than worrying about what-ifs. The protection package covers most physical damage to the vehicle during your trip, and you choose your coverage level (not the host) during checkout, so you can match it to your comfort level. It is not traditional insurance, but it provides real financial peace of mind. Pro tip: first-time renters around Lake Wisconsin often choose a higher-tier package for that extra confidence on winding county roads near Devil's Lake.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Lake Wisconsin RV rental?
Booking is low-risk: RVezy sets a clear cancellation policy on every reservation, including a money-back grace period right after booking so you can lock in your dates with confidence. Cancellation outcomes depend on how far out you cancel and circumstances like severe weather, which is a common consideration for a Lake Wisconsin RV trip given the region's spring storms. Because RVezy (not the individual host) manages the cancellation policy, the process is consistent across every listing. Pro tip: book early for July weekends around the Merrimac Ferry, then relax knowing you have flexibility if plans shift.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Lake Wisconsin RV trip?
Absolutely, pet-friendly RV rental in Lake Wisconsin is easy to find. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you'll see dozens of motorhomes and travel trailers where pups are welcome. Lake Wisconsin and the surrounding Sauk and Columbia counties are very dog-friendly: Devil's Lake State Park has designated pet swim and picnic areas, and the trails at Gibraltar Rock State Natural Area allow leashed dogs with stunning bluff-top views. Many hosts even provide bowls, towels, and outdoor mats. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any pet fee and let them know your dog's size and breed.
dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/parks/petsCan the RV be delivered to me at Lake Wisconsin?
Yes, RV delivery in Lake Wisconsin is one of the most popular options on RVezy, and it is a game-changer if it is your first time renting an RV. Many local hosts will drop the RV right at your campsite at Merry Mac's Campground, Smokey Hollow Campground, or a private lakeside property near Lodi or Poynette, then level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system. Filter by Delivery on the search page to see who offers it. Pro tip: delivery is a smart pick if you are flying into Madison's Dane County Regional Airport, about 35 minutes south, and do not want to drive a big rig on day one.
rvezy.com/How far can I drive, and what mileage policies should I expect?
You've got plenty of room to roam. Most Lake Wisconsin RV rentals include between 100 and 150 free miles per night, and several hosts offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, perfect for longer loops through the state. From the lake's main launch in Merrimac, you're just 12 miles to Baraboo, 35 miles to Madison, 45 miles to Wisconsin Dells, and about 110 miles to Milwaukee. Each listing clearly shows the mileage allowance and the per-mile overage fee, so there are no surprises. Pro tip: if you're planning a bigger RV road trip from Lake Wisconsin up to Door County (around 200 miles), filter for unlimited-mileage listings before you book.
wisconsindot.gov/Pages/travel/road/default.aspxWhere are the best campgrounds near Lake Wisconsin?
You're spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping in Lake Wisconsin. Merry Mac's Campground in Merrimac offers full-hookup sites, a pool, and mini-golf right by the Merrimac Ferry. Smokey Hollow Campground in Lodi sits just minutes from the lake's south shore with shaded sites and a swim pond. Devil's Lake State Park, about 15 miles north in Baraboo, has three campgrounds with electric sites and is Wisconsin's most popular state park. For a quieter feel, try Lake of the Woods Campground near Wisconsin Dells. Pro tip: reserve Devil's Lake sites the moment your 11-month window opens through Wisconsin DNR.
dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/parks/devilslake/campingWhen is the best time to visit Lake Wisconsin in an RV?
Late May through mid-October is prime time for a Lake Wisconsin RV trip, with summer highs in the upper 70s to mid-80s Fahrenheit and warm lake water through August. June brings lush greenery and fewer crowds, July and August are peak boating and swimming season, and September and early October deliver brilliant fall colors along the bluffs with daytime temps in the 60s, ideal sweater weather around the campfire. Winters are cold (often below 20 Fahrenheit) and most campgrounds close. Pro tip: visit during the first two weekends of October to catch peak autumn color on the Merrimac Ferry crossing.
weather.gov/mkx/I have never driven an RV before. Will I be okay around Lake Wisconsin?
You will be in great hands. First time renting an RV is one of the most common scenarios on RVezy, and every host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup covering driving, leveling, hookups, and dumping. The roads around Lake Wisconsin are forgiving for beginners: County Highway V hugs the shore with gentle curves, and Highway 113 leads straight to the historic Merrimac Ferry, a free state-operated ferry that is an easy drive-on, drive-off experience even for a Class C. If you would rather skip driving entirely, book a host who offers delivery. Pro tip: practice in the campground loop before heading out for your first errand run.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if I have a breakdown or issue during my trip?
Help is just a phone call away. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection package, so if you get a flat near Okee, lose power outside Poynette, or need a tow on Highway 78, one number connects you with dispatch. RVezy's customer support team is also available before, during, and after every trip, and your host is usually quick to respond by message too. The Lake Wisconsin area has reliable cell coverage and several service stations in Lodi, Baraboo, and Sauk City. Pro tip: save the roadside number to your phone before you leave the driveway.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best RV road trips from Lake Wisconsin?
Lake Wisconsin is a perfect launch pad for an RV road trip. From Lake Wisconsin, drive 15 miles north to Devil's Lake State Park for cliff hiking, 30 miles to Wisconsin Dells for waterparks and the Wisconsin River boat tours, 60 miles west to the rolling hills and trout streams of the Driftless Area, or 110 miles southeast to Milwaukee's lakefront. For a longer loop, head 200 miles northeast to Door County's cherry orchards and Lake Michigan shoreline. Cross-border travel into Illinois or Minnesota is generally allowed, but always confirm with your host first; trips into Canada need extra paperwork and Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals.
travelwisconsin.com/trip-ideas/road-tripsWhat kind of fuel mileage and gas budget should I plan for?
Plan smart and your fuel budget won't bite. Most Class C motorhomes around Lake Wisconsin average 8 to 12 miles per gallon, campervan rentals near Lake Wisconsin often hit 16 to 20 MPG, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle. Wisconsin gas prices typically run close to the national average, with stations in Lodi, Sauk City, and Baraboo offering the most competitive pump prices near the lake. For a typical 300-mile weekend loop in a Class C, budget roughly $90 to $130 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up in Sauk City before heading north, since prices tend to creep up closer to the Wisconsin Dells tourist corridor.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Lake Wisconsin?
For the smoothest Lake Wisconsin RV trip, book campsites as early as you can. Wisconsin state parks like Devil's Lake open reservations 11 months in advance through the Wisconsin DNR reservation system, and prime summer weekends fill within hours of opening. Private campgrounds like Merry Mac's and Smokey Hollow accept reservations year-round and typically sell out 2 to 3 months ahead for July and August Fridays and Saturdays. Mid-week stays are usually open even last-minute. Pro tip: set a calendar reminder for exactly 11 months before your target Saturday, then log into the DNR site at 9 a.m. Central to grab the best lakefront pads.
dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/parks/reservationsWhat are driving conditions like around Lake Wisconsin?
Driving around Lake Wisconsin is refreshingly easy for an RV. The main routes, Highway 113, Highway 78, and County V, are paved, well-maintained, and mostly flat to gently rolling with low traffic outside of summer ferry lines. The Merrimac Ferry crossing has a 60,000-pound vehicle limit, which comfortably accommodates any RV on the RVezy platform. Watch for deer at dawn and dusk, and slow down on the bluff curves heading toward Devil's Lake. Winter brings snow and ice from December through March. Pro tip: arrive at the Merrimac Ferry before 11 a.m. on summer Saturdays to avoid a 30-minute wait, or take the Highway 12 bridge in Sauk City as a backup.

Local campgrounds make RV camping in Lake Wisconsin a breeze. Most private parks like Merry Mac's and Smokey Hollow offer full hookups (20/30/50-amp electric, water, and sewer), Wi-Fi, hot showers, laundry, and dump stations on site. State park campgrounds at Devil's Lake provide electric sites plus shared water spigots and a centralized dump station. You'll find potable water fills and propane refills in Lodi, Baraboo, and Sauk City. Pro tip: if you're staying at a state park without sewer hookups, plan a mid-trip dump at the Devil's Lake Northern Lights Campground dump station, which is free for registered campers and just minutes from the lake.
dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/parks/campingWhat is typically included inside a Lake Wisconsin RV rental?
You will find a comfortable home on wheels. Most motorhome rentals in Lake Wisconsin come fully equipped with sleeping for 4 to 8 (queen beds, bunks, and convertible dinettes), a full kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and sink, a bathroom with shower and toilet, climate control with furnace and air conditioning, and seatbelts for safe travel. Many listings include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor awning, and onboard generator. Some hosts offer Wi-Fi hotspots as an add-on, which is helpful since lakeside signal can dip in coves. Pro tip: check the listing photos and amenity icons carefully so you know whether your rental sleeps the whole crew before you book.
rvezy.com/What add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
Hosts make your Lake Wisconsin RV trip turn-key with popular add-ons like bedding and linen packages ($30 to $75), kitchen kits, camp chairs, propane fire pits, bike racks, kayak racks, and Wi-Fi hotspots. Generator hours are often included up to a daily limit, with a small fee per hour after. Pickup is usually at the host's driveway in Lodi, Poynette, Merrimac, or Madison, with delivery available for an additional fee based on distance. Mileage policies are clearly listed and average 100 to 150 free miles per night. Pro tip: bundling delivery with a linen and kitchen kit makes for a true zero-setup arrival at your campsite.
rvezy.com/How does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure. When you book your RV rental in Lake Wisconsin, RVezy charges your card through the platform (never cash to the host), with a deposit at booking and the balance due before your trip starts. A refundable security deposit, typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV's value, is pre-authorized on your card a few days before pickup. As long as the RV comes back in the same condition, the hold is released within a few days of return. To avoid any issues, take date-stamped photos at both pickup and drop-off, follow the host's fuel and dump-station instructions, and report any concerns through the RVezy app.
