Camping near Laona, Wisconsin
Laona is a small village in Forest County in northeastern Wisconsin, surrounded by the Lakewood-Laona Ranger District of the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest. The forest gives RV travelers a large public-land base within a short drive of town, with lakes, rivers, and mixed hardwood and pine woodlands throughout the district.
Private campgrounds in the immediate area serve RV renters looking for hookups and family amenities. Maple Heights Campground and Holly Wood Hill Camping and RV and Crandon Saloon Event Center sit closest to the village, while Heavens Up North Campground, Northern Hideaway RV Park and Campground, and Lake Hilbert Campground extend options a bit farther out into the surrounding Northwoods.
Most visitors combine a private-park stay with day trips into the national forest for fishing, paddling, and hiking. Highway 8 runs east-west through Laona and connects to Crandon and the Nicolet forest access roads, making it a practical staging point for a Forest County RV trip.
Things to do around Laona
The Lumberjack Steam Train in Laona is the area's signature family attraction. A vintage 2-6-2 logging locomotive pulls passenger cars over the original Laona and Northern Railway line to the Camp Five Museum, the site of the Connor Lumber and Land Company's 1902 logging camp, where visitors can tour logging-history exhibits, an active blacksmith shop, a nature center, and a farm corral.
Outdoor recreation centers on the national forest. Laura Lake, reached from Highway 8 north of Laona, has a 2.25-mile hiking trail around the lake, a swim beach and picnic area on adjacent Gordon Lake, and boat landings on both lakes, which are restricted to electric motors only. Area lakes and streams support walleye, bass, panfish, muskellunge, and trout fishing.

The practical camping season in Forest County runs from roughly May through mid-October. National forest campgrounds in the Lakewood-Laona district, including Laura Lake, typically open in May and close by mid-October once overnight temperatures drop and water systems are shut off for winter. Peak use falls between the Fourth of July and Labor Day, and lakeside sites at Laura Lake and similar recreation areas fill quickly on summer holiday weekends.
Late spring brings blackflies and mosquitoes, especially in the woods near water, so screen rooms and repellent are worth packing. September brings cooler nights, thinner crowds, and fall color that typically peaks in late September to early October across northern Wisconsin.
Winter shifts the region toward snowmobiling, ice fishing, and cross-country skiing rather than RV camping. Most private RV parks near Laona close for the season, and forest roads may be gated or unplowed.
How to book a site
National forest campgrounds in the Chequamegon-Nicolet, including Laura Lake in the Lakewood-Laona district, are reserved through Recreation.gov. The booking window opens up to six months ahead of the arrival date, and popular lakeside loops sell out early for summer weekends and holidays.
Wisconsin State Park System sites, if the trip extends to nearby state properties, are booked through the state's GoingToCamp portal or by phone at 1-888-947-2757. Reservations can be made up to 11 months in advance, with the window opening at 9 a.m. Central Time.
Private campgrounds near Laona, including Maple Heights Campground, Holly Wood Hill Camping and RV and Crandon Saloon Event Center, Heavens Up North Campground, Northern Hideaway RV Park and Campground, and Lake Hilbert Campground, are booked directly with the operator. Call ahead for big-rig length limits, hookup type, and seasonal opening dates.
What to expect
Expect a rural, forested setting with limited services. Laona itself has a population of only a few hundred, and grocery and fuel options are basic. Crandon, about ten miles west on Highway 8, has larger stores and additional restaurants for restocking.
Cell coverage is inconsistent in the national forest and on side roads. Download offline maps before leaving town, and expect gravel forest roads leading into some Chequamegon-Nicolet campgrounds. National forest sites in the district are generally rustic, with vault toilets and drinking water but no electric or sewer hookups, so private parks are the better choice for renters who need power, sewer, and Wi-Fi.
Black bears live throughout Forest County, and a forest firewood order restricts moving firewood more than 25 miles. Store food and coolers inside the RV overnight, and slow down on Highway 8 and county routes for deer at dawn and dusk.
