Campgrounds and RV parks near Lily Lake, WI

Water activities dominate the trip planning list. Lily Lake itself has a public boat landing and holds panfish, largemouth bass, and northern pike. The nearby Fox River chain adds far more shoreline, plus walleye, muskie, crappie, catfish, and bullhead for anglers willing to travel a few miles. On land, Richard Bong State Recreation Area covers roughly 4,515 acres of managed prairie with mountain biking, hiking, horseback riding, swimming, and a nature center. The property is also known for less common uses like high-power rocketry, land sailing, and ultralight aviation in its Special Use Zone. Chain O' Lakes State Park in Illinois adds boat and canoe rental, picnic areas, and multiple trail systems for families splitting time between the lake and shore, plus direct access to the Fox River and Grass Lake.

The prime RV window runs from Memorial Day weekend through mid-October. State campgrounds at Richard Bong typically open in spring and stay busy through Labor Day, with the Sunrise and Sunset loops filling most weekends. Chain O' Lakes concessions, including boat rental and the camp store, generally run in the warmer months from spring through mid-fall. Spring brings the wettest stretch of the year, with April averaging the highest rainfall and trails often muddy into May. Summer weather is warm and humid, occasionally stormy, and July is typically the busiest month for both campgrounds and the Fox River chain. Bugs peak in June and early July around the marshy shorelines. Fall offers cooler nights, lower bug pressure, and strong fishing, though hunting seasons open on portions of Richard Bong and require awareness of posted zones. Winter shuts down most campground services, but ice fishing, snowshoeing, sledding, and cross-country skiing continue at both Chain O' Lakes and Bong when snowpack allows.

Terrain around Lily Lake is gently rolling glacial landscape: restored prairie, oak openings, wetlands, and a scatter of small lakes. Roads into the campgrounds are generally paved with short gravel spurs, and most sites accommodate travel trailers and Class C motorhomes without difficulty. Larger Class A rigs should confirm site length at Chain O' Lakes, where several loops were laid out decades ago. At Wisconsin DNR sites, expect a mix of electric and non-electric campsites, shower buildings, flush and vault toilets, a dump station, and a playground. Illinois state park sites at Turner Lake South are Class B-Premium with picnic tables, fire rings, and access to shower and restroom buildings shared with neighboring loops. Cell coverage is generally reliable across the area. Mosquitoes and ticks are common near marsh edges; bring repellent and check kids after wooded hikes.
