Campgrounds and RV parks near Lomira, WI

The Horicon Marsh is one of the largest freshwater marshes in the United States and offers bird watching, hiking trails, and educational programs about local wildlife. The Wild Goose State Trail runs along the west side of the marsh and provides a flat, family-friendly biking and walking path. Interpretive centers on both the state and federal sides of the marsh explain the ecology of the wetland. East of Lomira, the Northern Unit of the Kettle Moraine State Forest offers hiking on the Ice Age National Scenic Trail, mountain biking, and swimming beaches at Long Lake and Mauthe Lake. Anglers can launch on Lake Sinissippi or the Rock River, and paddlers have quiet water on both. Day trips to Holy Hill Basilica and small farm towns along Highway 175 round out a rainy-day plan.

Camping season in this part of Wisconsin runs mainly from late April through mid-October. Most private campgrounds operate from May through October, while a limited number of state forest sites remain open year-round. Spring is prime birding season on Horicon Marsh, with waterfowl migration peaking from late March through early May, though sites can be muddy after wet weeks. Wisconsin's variable spring weather calls for preparation, particularly for early-season trips when overnight lows can still drop below freezing. Summer is the busiest stretch. Warm days support swimming, kayaking, and long trail rides, and weekends near Independence Day and Labor Day book out early at both private parks and state campgrounds. Renters planning summer trips should lock in dates well ahead. Fall is arguably the best window for RVers who dislike crowds. Colors in the Kettle Moraine typically peak in early to mid-October, with daytime highs in the fifties and low sixties and overnight lows dropping into the thirties. Bring layers and a heater hookup for shoulder-season nights. Winter camping is possible at select state forest sites, but water is shut off and most private campgrounds close.

Sites in the immediate Lomira area lean rural and quiet. Private parks generally provide 30- and 50-amp electric, water, and dump stations, with a mix of pull-through and back-in sites. State forest campgrounds in the Northern Unit tend to be more rustic: electric hookups are limited, and many loops offer only vault toilets and hand pumps. Cell coverage is generally solid along the Interstate 41 corridor and thinner inside the state forest and the marsh interior. Mosquitoes and ticks are common from May through August near wetlands, so pack repellent. Big-rig renters should confirm site length before booking, since older loops in county and state campgrounds can be tight for anything over 32 feet.
