Campgrounds and RV parks near Lyons, WI

Water is the main draw. Geneva Lake supports boating, fishing, swimming, and a public shore path that circles the entire lake and crosses private property by long-standing tradition. Big Foot Beach State Park anchors the south end of the lake with a sand beach and short, mostly level trails suitable for kids. Richard Bong State Recreation Area is built for active families. It has a network of trails for hiking, biking, horseback riding, and off-highway motorcycle and ATV use, a shallow family beach, a fishing pier, and a special use zone for model rockets, model airplanes, hang gliders, and ultralight aircraft. Wolf Lake inside the park is good for kayaking and shore fishing. Off-site, downtown Lake Geneva has restaurants and shops, and the surrounding countryside includes bike trails, wineries, and the Kettle Moraine State Forest to the northwest.

The prime camping window runs from late May through early September. Wisconsin state park campgrounds at Big Foot Beach and Richard Bong take reservations year-round, and weekends at Big Foot Beach fill quickly because it is the only state park inside Lake Geneva city limits. Booking well in advance is standard practice, since the reservation window opens eleven months out and popular electric sites are claimed fast. Spring and fall are quieter but weather can swing. Spring brings mud on trails and heavy mosquito and tick pressure once temperatures warm, so strong repellent is worth packing. Fall delivers the most comfortable conditions for hiking, with crisp nights and lighter crowds on weekdays, though weekend foliage traffic picks up. Hunting seasons overlap fall camping at Richard Bong, so blaze orange is recommended when using shared trails. Winter shifts the use pattern. Camping seasons vary by property and some services shut down, and Big Foot Beach grooms cross-country ski tracks on its east-side trails when snow allows.

Big Foot Beach State Park has about 100 sites, with 34 electric pedestals and the remainder non-electric. All sites have a gravel pad, fire ring, and picnic table, and the park has a dump station, vault toilets, and a shower building. Most sites can handle rigs of at least 25 feet, with some accommodating larger RVs, but the campground can feel tight on busy weekends. Richard Bong has two family campgrounds, Sunrise and Sunset, with more than 200 sites between them. Sunrise offers electric hookups and is the better fit for RVs, while Sunset is largely non-electric and skews toward tents. Amenities include shower buildings, flush and vault toilets, a dump station, and a playground, with a 24/7 firewood vending machine at the visitor center. Wisconsin restricts moving firewood into parks, so buy on site or nearby.
