Campgrounds near Merrimac, Wisconsin
Merrimac sits on the north shore of Lake Wisconsin in Sauk County, a short drive from Devil's Lake State Park, Baraboo, and Wisconsin Dells. The village is best known as the western landing of the free Merrimac Ferry, a cable ferry that carries Highway 113 traffic across the Wisconsin River between Sauk and Columbia counties. That location puts RV travelers within easy reach of bluff hiking, paddling, and small-town lakeside dining.
Campground options in the area split into two categories. Devil's Lake State Park operates the Quartzite, Northern Lights, and Ice Age campgrounds, with Quartzite open year-round and Northern Lights and Ice Age typically closing in October and reopening around April. Private options closer to the ferry and Lake Wisconsin include Merry Macs Campground, Crystal Lake Campground and RV Park, and Lake Wisconsin Campground.
Most RV travelers use Merrimac as a base for day trips: crossing on the ferry, hiking the quartzite bluffs at Devil's Lake, or driving up Highway 12 to the Dells. Devil's Lake State Park sits along the Ice Age National Scenic Trail and offers views from 500-foot quartzite bluffs overlooking a 360-acre lake.
Things to do near Merrimac
The signature activity is the free Merrimac Ferry, which crosses the Wisconsin River on Highway 113 just south of the village. The Merrimac Ferry, Wisconsin's only free ferry, takes about seven minutes for a single crossing, and the Colsac III can hold 15 cars or trucks on board, in addition to motorcycles, bicycles, and pedestrians. Foot passengers can walk on and grab ice cream at the landings on either side.
Devil's Lake State Park is the main draw for hikers and paddlers. The park is known for its 500-foot quartzite bluffs, a 360-acre lake, roughly 30 miles of trails, two swimming beaches, and naturalist programs. The East Bluff Trail is a good choice to see the park's pink-and-purple quartzite bluffs, and visitors can rent a kayak, canoe, paddleboat, or standup paddleboard to explore the 360-acre lake. Rock climbers come for hundreds of routes and boulder problems on the east and west bluffs.
Other nearby stops include Parfrey's Glen sandstone gorge, Wollersheim Winery south of the ferry landing, Gibraltar Rock overlook, and the shops and restaurants around Baraboo's downtown square.

Peak season runs from Memorial Day through mid-October, with summer weekends the busiest. Devil's Lake camping reservations go fast, and as Wisconsin's most-visited state park, campground reservations fill up earlier each year. Reservations can be made for the same day of arrival or up to 11 months in advance, so RV travelers targeting July or August should plan roughly a year out.
Shoulder seasons are quieter but come with tradeoffs. Quartzite campground is open year-round, while the Northern Lights and Ice Age campgrounds typically close in October and reopen around April, and dump stations are closed in the offseason to prevent freeze damage, usually from mid-October through mid-April. The Merrimac Ferry also runs on a seasonal schedule: it runs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week from mid-April through the end of November, weather permitting, and shuts down through the winter.
Winter visitors should note that winter camping is available at Quartzite Campground, though services are limited, and potable water, flush toilets, and showers are not available during the off-season.

How to book a campsite
Devil's Lake State Park uses the statewide Wisconsin State Parks reservation system. All campsites are reservable, reservations are required and can be made for the same day of arrival or up to 11 months in advance, campers must reserve before setting up on any site, and sites can be booked online or by calling 1-888-947-2757. All sites must be reserved in advance through the state reservation system, and there are no first-come, first-served sites, so walk-ups are not an option.
A Wisconsin State Park vehicle admission pass is also required for each vehicle at the campground, and passes can be purchased at the park entrance or in advance. Private campgrounds around Merrimac, including Merry Macs Campground, Crystal Lake Campground and RV Park, and Lake Wisconsin Campground, book directly through each property and are useful backups when the state park is full.
What to expect on arrival
Devil's Lake sites are functional rather than fancy. Each campsite has a picnic table, a gravel or paved area for parking, room for at least one family tent, and a metal fire ring, and campsites are not within sight of the lake. Northern Lights has a variety of sites with both electric and non-electric options in open and wooded settings, is the only campground with wooded electric sites, has a dump/fill station, sits about half a mile from the lakeshore, and has a playground near site 140. Quartzite Campground has large sites ideal for RV camping, plus showers and a dump station.
Expect basic services and spotty connectivity. Dump and fill stations are free for use by registered campers, and running water for drinking is available at dozens of taps scattered throughout the family and group camp areas. Cell service in the bluffs can be weak, so download maps before arrival.
