Campgrounds and RV parks near Nashotah, WI

Hiking is the main draw. The Ice Age National Scenic Trail spans more than 1,000 miles across Wisconsin and includes about 30 miles of trail through the Kettle Moraine State Forest Southern Unit. Lapham Peak alone has roughly 26 miles of hiking trail, and a 4-mile segment of the Ice Age Trail passes through the property. A 45-foot wooden observation tower crowns the summit and gives long views over southeastern Wisconsin. Swimming, paddling, and fishing are close at hand. Ottawa Lake, Lower Spring Lake, Rice Lake, and Whitewater Lake range from small ponds up to 625 acres and hold panfish, walleye, muskie, bass, and northern pike, with accessible fishing piers at Ottawa Lake and Whitewater Lake. Winter brings cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling, with lighted ski trails at Lapham Peak.

The RV season around Nashotah runs from late spring through fall. Private grounds such as Bark River Campground and Resort and Timber Trail Campground follow a typical Upper Midwest pattern, with peak demand from Memorial Day through Labor Day and shoulder weeks in May and September. Nights are cool in the shoulder months, and hookups matter if a heater is in the plan. State forest campgrounds in the Southern Unit have distinct operating windows. Ottawa Lake is the only year-round campground, with a limited number of plowed sites and a winter vault toilet available in the cold months. Pinewoods and Whitewater Lake are open for camping from mid-May through mid-October. Backpack shelters along the Ice Age Trail are available year-round at three designated sites in the Southern Unit. Fall color peaks in the kettle moraine landscape in October and pulls heavy weekend traffic. Winter turns most of the region over to cross-country skiing and snowshoeing rather than RV camping, and most private grounds close or move to limited operations. Spring brings mud on unimproved trails and the first bird migration waves through the wetlands north of the village.

State forest campgrounds run on a self-directed model. Check-in for camping is not required, and campers go directly to the campsite where they are staying. The confirmation email lists the campground name and address. A Wisconsin State Park vehicle admission pass is required for any motor vehicle brought onto the property, purchased daily or as an annual sticker. Hookups vary. Ottawa Lake offers a mix of electric and non-electric sites, while Pinewoods and Whitewater Lake have no electric hookups. Sanitary dump stations are provided at Ottawa Lake, Pinewoods, and Whitewater Lake. Private options nearby generally offer water and electric and often sewer. Wisconsin enforces a strict firewood rule to slow the spread of invasive pests. Firewood is not allowed on Wisconsin state park or forest properties from more than 10 miles away from the destination campground, so buy locally or on-site. Pets are welcome at most sites on a leash, with restrictions in swim areas and designated quiet loops.
