Campgrounds and RV parks near Oakfield, WI

Wildlife viewing anchors the area. Horicon Marsh is one of the largest freshwater cattail marshes in North America and hosts hundreds of bird species, with exceptional viewing during spring and fall migration. Popular activities include wildlife observation, photography, hiking, fishing, educational programs, guided tours, bicycling, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and deer and upland game hunting on the national refuge. Several miles of designated hiking trails run through forest, prairie, and wetland habitats, including a wetland boardwalk where Canada geese, wood ducks, marsh wrens, and painted turtles are commonly viewed from spring to fall. Interactive displays at the Horicon Marsh Education and Visitor Center work well for rainy days with kids. Paddlers can launch canoes and kayaks on the Rock River, and boat rentals are available seasonally at some riverfront properties.

The camping season in this part of Wisconsin runs roughly late April through October. Most private campgrounds, including The Playful Goose Campground of the Horicon Marsh, operate from spring through fall, while some county parks remain open year-round. Spring shoulder weeks can be wet, and low-lying sites near the marsh sometimes stay soft into May. Migration windows drive demand. Spring and fall bring large numbers of ducks and Canada geese through the marsh, and birders book early for late-September through late-October weekends. Fall brings vivid colors to the Kettle Moraine ridges, with cool nights in the 30s and daytime highs typically in the 50s and 60s. Summer weekends fill quickly with family campers, tubers, and anglers targeting Lake Winnebago walleye. Reservations are strongly recommended for summer weekends and the fall color season, and many campgrounds offer online booking. Winter brings freezing temperatures, snow, and mostly closed private campgrounds, though the refuge stays open for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.

Expect small to mid-sized private campgrounds rather than resort-scale parks. Sites vary from open, grassy pull-throughs to shaded back-ins; hookups commonly include water and electric, with sewer or dump stations at most properties. Cell coverage is generally reliable across Fond du Lac and Dodge counties. The landscape is flat to gently rolling farmland broken by wetlands and glacial ridges. Mosquitoes and biting flies peak from late May through July near the marsh, so bring repellent and screened shelters. Dogs are welcome on most refuge trails and public use areas but must be leashed at all times, with a few sensitive boardwalks closed to pets. Grocery, fuel, and propane services are available in Fond du Lac, Waupun, and Beaver Dam, all within a short drive of Oakfield.
