Okauchee Lake camping overview
Okauchee Lake sits in Waukesha County in southeastern Wisconsin, about 30 miles west of Milwaukee. The 1,210-acre lake is one of the largest in the Lake Country region, part of the Oconomowoc River chain, and reaches a maximum depth of about 90 feet. RV travelers use it as a base for water recreation, glacial-terrain hiking, and easy access to the I-94 corridor.
The surrounding region is anchored by the Kettle Moraine State Forest, split into a Southern Unit and a Northern Unit. The landscape is characterized by kettles, moraines, and eskers formed by glaciers, with miles of trails winding through forests, prairies, and glacial lakes. Private RV parks fill in around the state land and near smaller lakes and rivers.
Close-in options include Bark River Campground and Resort, Circle K Campground, Country View Campground, and Timber Trail Campground. Slightly farther north, The Playful Goose Campground of the Horicon Marsh gives RVers a base for one of the largest freshwater cattail marshes in the United States.
Things to do around Okauchee Lake
Okauchee Lake is popular for boating, fishing, swimming, and paddling, and public boat landings give RV visitors quick access to the water. Anglers target musky, walleye, largemouth and smallmouth bass, northern pike, and panfish. In the Kettle Moraine Southern Unit, roughly 30 miles of off-road bike trails and a long stretch of the Ice Age National Scenic Trail put serious hiking and cycling within a short drive.
Families staying at Bark River Campground and Resort can paddle from the campground, use the swimming pool and sports courts, and let kids run at the playground. The Playful Goose Campground of the Horicon Marsh sits next to Horicon Marsh, where spring and fall bring large concentrations of Canada geese, plus herons, egrets, and eagles.
Old World Wisconsin and Holy Hill are within easy driving distance for day trips.

The prime RV season runs May through mid-October. Private campgrounds and most state forest sites are fully operational once overnight lows stay above freezing, which generally lines up with the ice-free months on the lake. Summer weekends are busy on the water and at campgrounds, and holiday weeks book well ahead.
Spring brings bird migration through the nearby Horicon Marsh and wildflowers on Kettle Moraine trails. Fall delivers hardwood color across the moraines and a second wave of goose migration through the marsh. Late-season campers should watch for cool nights and the possibility of hard frost by mid-October.
Winter closes most private parks, but the state forest system keeps some sites open. Ottawa Lake campground is the only year-round campground in the Kettle Moraine Southern Unit, with a limited number of sites plowed in winter. Water service and shower buildings are reduced or shut off in the cold months, so winter campers should arrive self-contained.

How to book a campsite near Okauchee Lake
Wisconsin state properties, including the Kettle Moraine State Forest, use a single reservation system. Camping reservations are required and can be made up to 11 months in advance of the planned date of occupancy. Campers must make a reservation before setting up on any site. Reservations can be made online through the Wisconsin State Park System reservation portal or by calling 1-888-947-2757. All state parks, southern forests, and state recreation areas are completely reservable, with no first-come, first-served standard campsites at these properties.
Summer weekends fill fast, and a three-night minimum applies to holiday weekends. A Wisconsin State Park vehicle admission pass is required in addition to the camping fee.
Private campgrounds, including Bark River Campground and Resort, Circle K Campground, Country View Campground, The Playful Goose Campground of the Horicon Marsh, and Timber Trail Campground, are booked directly through each operator by phone or website.
What to expect on the ground
Private parks in this area lean family-oriented, with pools, playgrounds, and a mix of overnight and seasonal sites. At Bark River Campground and Resort, RV sites are pull-through and a dump station is on property. Expect gently rolling to flat terrain with a mix of open and shaded sites. Cell service is generally reliable across the region.
State forest campgrounds run more rustic. Ottawa Lake campground offers 100 sites, including 65 electrical sites, two shower buildings, flush toilets, and a vault toilet building, plus a sanitary dump station. Some loops fit larger rigs; others are tight, so check site dimensions before booking.
Bring insect repellent from late May through August, and do not move firewood between properties. Buy it locally or on site to protect against invasive pests.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Okauchee Lake, WI
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Okauchee Lake, WI?
RV rental in Okauchee Lake is one of the most affordable ways to enjoy Wisconsin's Lake Country, with most rigs on RVezy ranging from about $95 to $275 per night depending on size and season. Travel trailers and pop-ups sit at the lower end, while Class C motorhomes and fifth wheels come in higher. To find a cheap RV rental in Okauchee Lake, book mid-week, target shoulder season (late April to mid-May or September), and use the price filter on RVezy. Pro tip: hosts near Oconomowoc and Hartland sometimes discount weeklong stays, so message them before booking to ask about multi-night savings.
travelwisconsin.com/article/camping/wisconsin-camping-guideDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Wisconsin?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Okauchee Lake. Wisconsin only requires a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) if your motorhome exceeds 45 feet in length, and virtually every RV listed on RVezy falls well under that threshold. You'll need to be 25 or older with a valid license, and RVezy verifies your ID through the platform during booking, so there's nothing to mail or upload at pickup. Visiting from abroad? An International Driving Permit paired with your home license keeps things smooth. Most first-time renters are surprised how simple Wisconsin's rules really are.
wisconsindot.gov/Pages/dmv/com-drv-vehs/rqts-for-cdl/cdl-requirements.aspxWhat protection is included with my Okauchee Lake RV rental?
Every RV rental in Okauchee Lake booked through RVezy comes with a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance included, so you are covered from the moment you pull out of the driveway. During checkout you choose the protection level that fits your trip, giving you control over coverage rather than leaving it up to the host. The plan covers damage to the RV and includes roadside support for issues like flat tires, lockouts, dead batteries, and towing. If a tire blows on US-12 or you lock the keys inside while parked near the Lake Country Recreation Trail, one call gets help dispatched. That built-in backup is why first-time renters feel confident booking an RV rental in Okauchee Lake.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Okauchee Lake RV trip?
Booking is low-risk: RVezy applies a clear cancellation policy to every reservation, including a grace period right after booking so you can lock in your dates with confidence. Your refund depends on how far in advance you cancel, and RVezy reviews requests tied to severe weather or natural disasters, which Wisconsin sees occasionally with summer thunderstorms or winter storms off Lake Michigan. The cancellation policy is set by RVezy rather than individual hosts, which keeps things consistent and fair. If a host cancels on you, RVezy helps you rebook or issues a refund. Pro tip: book early to secure the best rigs for summer weekends on Okauchee Lake, then relax knowing the policy has your back if plans shift.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an Okauchee Lake RV rental?
Absolutely, pet-friendly RV rental in Okauchee Lake is easy to find. On RVezy, just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter and you'll see motorhomes and travel trailers from hosts who welcome dogs and cats. Wisconsin is a dream for four-legged travelers: Lapham Peak Unit of the Kettle Moraine State Forest, just 15 minutes from Okauchee, has miles of leashed-dog trails, and Naga-Waukee Park on Pewaukee Lake allows pets in most areas. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm pet fees and let them know your dog's size. Bring a long lead so Fido can enjoy the campsite while you grill brats lakeside.
dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/parks/petsinparksCan a host deliver the RV to my campground or lake house?
Yes, RV delivery in Okauchee Lake is one of the most popular options on RVezy, and it is a game-changer if you are new to RVing. Many local hosts will tow or drive the RV directly to spots like Pike Lake Unit of the Kettle Moraine State Forest in Hartford, Ottawa Lake Campground in the Southern Kettle Moraine, or a private driveway on the Okauchee chain of lakes. They handle setup, level the rig, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before leaving. Use the Delivery filter on RVezy to see hosts who offer this service. It is the easiest way to enjoy your first motorhome rental in Okauchee Lake without towing or driving anything bigger than your own car.

Hosts set their own mileage policies, and you can filter for RV rental with unlimited mileage on RVezy if you're planning long distances. dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/parks/kms/campingWhen is the best time of year for an Okauchee Lake RV trip?
Late May through mid-October is prime time for RV camping in Okauchee Lake, with summer highs in the upper 70s to mid-80s Fahrenheit and lake water warm enough for swimming by late June. September and early October are the local insider's secret: crisp 60-degree days, fewer crowds, and the sugar maples around the Kettle Moraine glowing red and gold. Spring (April to mid-May) is quiet and cool, often in the 50s and 60s. Winter RV trips are possible with four-season rigs but most local campgrounds close from late October to April. Pro tip: book Memorial Day and 4th of July weekends 3 to 4 months ahead.
weather.gov/mkx/climateI have never driven an RV before, will I be okay?
Yes, and Okauchee Lake is actually a great place for first time renting an RV. The roads around Waukesha County are mostly flat, lightly trafficked county highways and routes like WI-16, which are ideal for getting comfortable behind the wheel. Every RVezy host provides a walkthrough at pickup covering driving tips, hookups, slide-outs, and the dump process, so you are never left guessing. Approved drivers on RVezy must be 25 or older with a valid license. If you would rather skip the driving entirely, choose a host who offers delivery and setup. Pro tip: start with a Class C motorhome or a smaller travel trailer for your first trip, then graduate to bigger rigs once you have a weekend under your belt.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if something goes wrong on the road?
You are never stuck alone. Every RV rental in Okauchee Lake booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, covering flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing. If anything mechanical pops up on I-94 heading toward Madison or along US-41 toward Fond du Lac, one phone call gets a pro dispatched to your location. Your host is also a text away for quick questions like resetting the inverter or restarting the fridge, and RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after your trip. That kind of backup is why so many first-timers feel confident booking an RV rental in Okauchee Lake.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Okauchee Lake RV rental into other states or Canada?
Interstate travel is welcome on RVezy rentals, so a road trip from Okauchee Lake to Michigan's Upper Peninsula, Minnesota's North Shore, or southern Illinois is totally doable. Cross-border travel into Canada may be allowed depending on the host and insurance setup, so message the host directly from the listing page to confirm before you book. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage does not extend there. Popular multi-state loops include Okauchee to Mackinac City (about 7 hours) and Okauchee through Minneapolis to Duluth (about 6 to 7 hours). Pro tip: keep your rental agreement and protection documents in the glovebox for any border or roadside check.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on my Okauchee Lake RV trip?
Wisconsin gas prices typically run a bit below the national average, hovering around $3.10 to $3.50 per gallon recently in the Milwaukee metro area. Class B campervans get about 18 to 22 mpg, Class C motorhomes average 8 to 14 mpg, and Class A or big fifth wheels often land between 6 and 10 mpg. For a weekend RV trip from Okauchee Lake to Devil's Lake State Park and back (about 210 miles round trip), budget roughly $45 to $90 in fuel depending on the rig. Pro tip: fill up at Costco in Pewaukee or Kwik Trip in Oconomowoc before you head out, both consistently among the cheapest in the area.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Okauchee Lake?
For Wisconsin State Park campgrounds like Pike Lake, Ottawa Lake, and Devil's Lake, reservations open 11 months ahead through the Wisconsin DNR reservation system at wisconsin.goingtocamp.com, and prime summer weekends fill within hours of opening. Private parks like Country View or Glacier Valley typically take bookings 6 to 12 months out and have more flexibility mid-week. For a smooth family RV trip in Okauchee Lake, lock down your campsite first, then book your RV on RVezy to match the dates. Pro tip: if you strike out on weekends, target Sunday-to-Thursday stays. You'll have the lake nearly to yourself and rates often drop.
dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/parks/reservationsWhat are local driving conditions like around Okauchee Lake?
Driving conditions around Okauchee Lake are some of the friendliest in the Midwest. The area sits along WI-16 and just north of I-94, giving you wide lanes and gentle terrain, very different from mountain driving out west. Watch for deer at dawn and dusk on rural roads like CTH-C and CTH-E, and slow down for tight bridges over the Bark River. Summer thunderstorms can roll in fast off Lake Michigan, so check the National Weather Service Milwaukee forecast each morning. Winter brings snow from November through March. Pro tip: avoid driving large rigs through downtown Oconomowoc on Friday summer evenings when boat traffic and tourists peak. Stick to WI-67 instead.

Most campgrounds within 30 minutes of Okauchee Lake offer electric hookups (30 or 50 amp), potable water spigots, and a sanitary dump station, with many private parks adding full sewer hookups, Wi-Fi, and laundry. Ottawa Lake Campground in the Kettle Moraine has flush toilets, showers, and a dump station; Pike Lake Unit offers electric sites and a shower building; Country View Campground in Mukwonago provides full hookups, a pool, and a camp store. Most state park campgrounds offer non-potable spigots for filling fresh tanks too. Pro tip: fill your fresh water tank before leaving the campground, the closest public dump and fill stations to Okauchee are at Ottawa Lake and Pike Lake.

Expect comfortable beds, a kitchen with a fridge, stove, and microwave, a bathroom with shower, propane heat and air conditioning, and seatbelts for passengers. Larger Class A and Class C motorhomes typically include a TV, and many hosts offer Wi-Fi hotspots, onboard generators, outdoor speakers, and even bikes or kayaks as add-ons. Travel trailers and fifth wheels often include awnings perfect for shading your picnic table at Mauthe Lake. Pro tip: read each RVezy listing's amenity list carefully and message the host about any must-haves like a coffee maker or pack-n-play before you confirm.
nps.gov/articles/rv-camping.htmWhat add-ons and pickup options should I expect with my RV rental?
RVezy hosts in Okauchee Lake offer a flexible menu of add-ons: generators, camp chairs, bedding and linen packages, kitchen kits, bike racks, kayaks, propane refills, and even outdoor grills. Mileage policies vary, with most hosts offering 100 to 150 free miles per day, though some advertise unlimited mileage for longer trips. Pickup typically happens at the host's home or a meeting point along WI-16, with a 45 to 60 minute walkthrough. Pro tip: ask about late drop-off if your trip ends on a Sunday evening, many Okauchee hosts will accommodate this for free.
fmcsa.dot.gov/protect-your-moveHow does the security deposit and payment work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure: when you book your RV rental in Okauchee Lake through RVezy, you pay online through the platform with a credit card. A security deposit is held separately on your card before pickup as a normal precaution, and it is released back to you shortly after drop-off if the RV comes back in the same condition. Hosts cannot charge fees outside the platform, which keeps everything transparent. To avoid issues, do a thorough walkthrough video at pickup and drop-off with your host, and report any pre-existing dings on the platform. Pro tip: keep all communication inside RVezy's messaging system so there is a clear record if any question comes up later.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I use an RV rental year-round in Okauchee Lake, including winter?
Yes, winter RV camping in Okauchee Lake is an option, and it is a memorable way to experience Wisconsin's snowy Kettle Moraine landscape. Mauthe Lake Campground in the Northern Kettle Moraine Unit offers winter camping access, and many RVezy hosts list four-season rigs with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and reliable furnaces. Daytime temperatures from December through February typically range from the teens to low 30s Fahrenheit, so you will want shore power for the electric heater and to keep fresh water tanks from freezing. Snowshoeing the Ice Age Trail right from your campsite is unforgettable. Pro tip: filter for four-season RVs on RVezy and ask the host to demo the winterization features at pickup.
