Campgrounds near Portage, Wisconsin
Portage sits in south-central Wisconsin at the historic canoe portage between the Fox and Wisconsin Rivers, roughly a half-hour south of Wisconsin Dells and a short drive from Devil's Lake State Park in the Baraboo Hills. The location puts RV renters within easy reach of both private resort-style campgrounds and Wisconsin's state park system, making it a practical base for family trips that mix waterparks, hiking, and lake time.
Private campgrounds close to town lean family-oriented, with pools, playgrounds, planned weekend activities, and cabin rentals alongside RV sites. Sites vary from wooded and private to open and social, with several campgrounds offering cabin rentals in addition to traditional tent and RV sites. Sky High Camping Resort, Pride of America Camping Resort, Duck Creek Campground, and Indian Trails Campground are among the closest options for RV renters staying near Portage.
For state-park camping, nearby Devil's Lake, Mirror Lake, and Rocky Arbor operate under the Wisconsin DNR system with sites that book heavily for summer weekends.
Things to do near Portage
Water is the main draw. Lakes and rivers in the area support swimming, fishing, kayaking, and tubing, and many private campgrounds add pools, splash pads, and stocked ponds for kids. Devil's Lake State Park, about 30 minutes west, offers a spring-fed lake ringed by quartzite bluffs with hiking trails that suit both casual walkers and stronger hikers.
Wisconsin Dells is a short drive north and adds indoor and outdoor waterparks, go-karts, and the Original Wisconsin Ducks land and water tour. Closer to town, families can visit the Historic Indian Agency House, Fort Winnebago Surgeons' Quarters, and the Portage Canal. County and state trails link into the broader Ice Age Trail system for day hikes.
Evenings tend to revolve around campfires, s'mores, and campground game rooms or organized events.

How to book a campsite near Portage
Private campgrounds around Portage take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Sky High Camping Resort, Pride of America Camping Resort, Indian Trails Campground, and Duck Creek Campground all handle their own bookings, and summer weekends often fill weeks or months out. Booking early is the safest approach for July, August, and any holiday weekend.
For Wisconsin state parks, camping reservations can be made for the same day of your arrival or up to 11 months before your planned occupancy date. Reservations run through wisconsin.goingtocamp.com or by calling 1-888-947-2757. For family campsites, advance reservations booked before May 15 for stays between May 15 and Oct. 31 require a minimum stay. A vehicle admission pass is required for any motor vehicle stopping in state parks, forests, or recreation areas, in addition to the site fee.
What to expect on-site
Private campgrounds near Portage generally offer full hookup and electric-only RV sites, dump stations, showers, laundry, and Wi-Fi of variable quality. Expect pools, playgrounds, and organized activities on summer weekends, and expect the campground to feel busy. Big-rig access is common but not universal, so confirm site length and turning radius when booking a larger motorhome or fifth wheel.
State park campgrounds are more rustic. Most sites are wooded, many are electric, and full hookups are rare. Showers and flush toilets are standard at the larger parks. Cell service is spotty in the Baraboo Hills.
Mosquitoes and ticks are active from late spring through early fall. Firewood must be sourced locally to limit invasive pests. Quiet hours are enforced at both private and state properties.

September and early October are the local insider's pick: daytime highs in the low 70s, cool 45 to 55°F nights ideal for campfires, fewer mosquitoes, and brilliant fall color along the Ice Age Trail and Baraboo Bluffs. Winter brings real Wisconsin cold (single digits to 20s°F) and snow, so most campgrounds close November through April, though some hosts still rent winterized RVs for Cascade Mountain ski trips. Book shoulder season for the best of everything.
weather.gov/mkx/climateI've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay?
You're going to do great, and you won't be on your own. Every RVezy host gives a hands-on walkthrough at pickup covering driving, leveling, slide-outs, propane, water, generator, and waste systems, so first time renting an RV in Portage isn't a guess-and-hope experience. Portage itself is one of the friendlier places in Wisconsin to learn: flat terrain, wide streets, and easy access to I-39 and US-51 with long acceleration lanes. Avoid downtown Madison's narrower streets your first day and stick to highways and campground routes. If you'd rather skip driving entirely, choose a host who offers delivery to your campsite. Hosts and RVezy's 24/7 support team are a text or call away the whole trip.
wisconsindot.gov/Pages/safety/safety-eng/teen-driver/coachs-handbook.aspxWhat if something breaks down during my trip?
Help is always one call away. Every RV rental in Portage, WI booked on RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of your protection package, covering things like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing. If something inside the RV acts up, like the fridge or AC, your host is the first call, and most respond quickly because it's their own RV. For anything bigger, RVezy's support team helps coordinate repairs or alternative arrangements. Wisconsin has well-distributed service centers along I-39, I-90, and US-51, so even if you're up by Necedah or out near Mauston, you're never truly stranded. That safety net is exactly why so many first-timers feel comfortable hitting the road.
wisconsindot.gov/Pages/travel/road/511-travel-info.aspxWhat are the best RV road trips I can take from Portage?
Portage is a phenomenal launch pad for an RV road trip. A popular loop is Wisconsin Dells and Baraboo, with Devil's Lake State Park, Mirror Lake State Park, and Mt. Olympus all within about 45 miles. Head north and you reach Wisconsin's Northwoods, with Minocqua about 170 miles away, perfect for a 4 to 5 day fishing trip. East takes you to Door County (about 190 miles) for the famous peninsula drive. South brings you to Madison (40 miles) for State Street and the lakes, or continue about 150 miles down to Chicago. travelwisconsin.com/trip-ideasWhat kind of fuel mileage and gas budget should I plan for?
Wisconsin gas prices are friendly to RV budgets. Class C motorhomes around Portage typically get 8 to 12 mpg, Class B campervans 16 to 20 mpg, and towable trailers depend on your tow vehicle (usually 10 to 14 mpg combined). At Wisconsin's typical pump prices of around $3.10 to $3.50 per gallon for regular, a 300-mile Portage to Door County round trip in a Class C runs roughly $90 to $120 in fuel. There are big truck stops with easy RV access just off I-39 at exits 87 and 92, and Kwik Trip stations all over town make fill-ups quick. eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Portage?
Sooner is smarter, especially for state parks. Wisconsin DNR opens reservations 11 months in advance through ReserveAmerica, and prime summer weekends at Devil's Lake and Mirror Lake (the two closest state parks to Portage) sell out within days of opening. For July and August trips, lock state park sites in by January or February. Private campgrounds like Sky High Camping Resort, Fox Hill RV Park, and Indian Trails are usually bookable 2 to 4 months ahead for summer weekends, with more flexibility midweek. For a last-minute Portage RV trip, target Sunday through Thursday arrivals or shoulder months (May, September, October). Once your site is booked, lock in your RVezy rental right after.
dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/parks/reservationsWhat are local driving conditions like around Portage?
Driving around Portage is about as RV-friendly as the Midwest gets. The terrain is gently rolling, highways like I-39, I-90/94, and US-51 are wide with generous shoulders, and rural Columbia County roads have minimal traffic. Watch for two local realities: deer (especially at dawn and dusk, hit the brakes don't swerve), and summer thunderstorms that can roll in fast. In spring, frost-heaved county roads can be bumpy, so reduce speed. Avoid the narrow streets of downtown Wisconsin Dells in a big rig during peak summer, park outside the strip and walk in. Winter brings snow and ice from late November through March, when many roads are salted but RV travel is best left to experienced cold-weather drivers.

consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0210-renting-vacation-homeHow does payment and the security deposit work for an RV rental in Portage?

help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Portage during the winter for skiing at Cascade Mountain?
Absolutely, and it is an underrated Wisconsin adventure. Cascade Mountain ski and snowboard area sits just minutes from downtown Portage, making a winter RV camping Portage trip totally doable. Some RVezy hosts rent four-season rigs with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and high-output furnaces for cold-weather use; message hosts directly to confirm before booking. Pair it with a private campground that stays open year-round and offers full shore power so you can run electric heaters without draining propane. Pack layers, drive cautiously in winter conditions, and check 511 Wisconsin for road updates before you head out. It is a true Northwoods experience most renters never consider.
