Overview of camping near Rome, Wisconsin
Rome is a small census-designated place in the town of Sullivan, Jefferson County, in southeastern Wisconsin, sitting along the Bark River between Madison and Milwaukee. The surrounding countryside is glacial farmland and hardwood forest, with the Southern Unit of the Kettle Moraine State Forest just to the east and a string of lakes and rivers within a short drive. It is a practical base for RV travelers who want lake access, state-forest trails, and easy interstate connections without staying in a major city.
Private campgrounds close to Rome include Bark River Campground and Resort near Jefferson, Circle K Campground in the Southern Kettle Moraine area, Scenic Ridge Campground on Whitewater Lake, Snug Harbor Inn Campground on Turtle Lake near Delavan, and River Bend RV Resort in Watertown. Most offer full or partial hookups, family amenities, and short drives to state forest trailheads and public boat launches.
Public camping at the Kettle Moraine State Forest Southern Unit rounds out the options for RV travelers who prefer wooded state-run sites at Ottawa Lake, Whitewater Lake, or Pinewoods.
Things to do near Rome
The Southern Unit of the Kettle Moraine State Forest covers more than 22,000 acres of glacial hills, kettle lakes, and prairie, with over 100 miles of trails for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding. The Ice Age Trail, Scuppernong Trails, John Muir Trails, and Emma Carlin Trails all pass through the area. Ottawa Lake and Whitewater Lake add swimming beaches and boat launches.
Water recreation is central to a stay here. Scenic Ridge Campground sits on 640-acre Whitewater Lake with a sandy beach, boat rentals, and fishing. Snug Harbor Inn Campground on Turtle Lake offers direct lake access from sites, and Bark River Campground and Resort has canoeing and fishing on the Bark River.
Families also visit Old World Wisconsin in Eagle, the Glacial Drumlin State Trail for cycling, and the Kettle Moraine Scenic Drive for a slow tour of the moraine country.

Summer is warm and humid with occasional thunderstorms, ideal for swimming, paddling, and lake fishing. Early fall delivers cooler temperatures, thinner crowds, and hardwood color through the Kettle Moraine ridges, generally peaking in mid-October.

How to book campsites near Rome
Public campsites in the Kettle Moraine State Forest Southern Unit are reserved through the Wisconsin State Park System reservation site at wiparks.net, or by calling 1-888-947-2757. Reservations open 11 months in advance of the arrival date, and popular Ottawa Lake and Whitewater Lake sites for summer weekends often book out early. A minimum two-night stay applies to advance reservations for May 15 through October 31, and a three-night minimum applies on holiday weekends. A vehicle admission pass is required in addition to the campsite fee.
Private campgrounds near Rome take reservations directly. Scenic Ridge Campground requires a two-night minimum on weekends and a three-night minimum on holiday weekends. Snug Harbor Inn on Turtle Lake, Bark River Campground and Resort, Circle K Campground, and River Bend RV Resort all accept bookings by phone or through their own websites.
What to expect on site
Most private campgrounds in the area cater to RVs with 20, 30, and 50-amp electric service and water hookups. Some parks offer sewer at the site; others, like Scenic Ridge, provide water and electric with a central dump station on the property. Rig-length limits vary by park, so confirm site dimensions when booking a larger RV.
Expect a mix of seasonal and nightly sites. Several nearby resorts have a strong seasonal-camper base, so short-term guests are often placed in dedicated loops. Amenities commonly include a camp store, showers, laundry, a swimming pool or lake beach, and playgrounds. Cell service is generally reliable near the interstate corridors and thinner in the deeper Kettle Moraine woods.

help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an RV trip in Rome, WI?
Yes, your dog is more than welcome on a Rome RV trip. Plenty of hosts offer pet-friendly RV rental Rome WI options, and you can find them quickly by selecting the Pet-Friendly filter when searching listings. Adams County is great for dogs: sandy shoreline access at Lake Petenwell County Park, leashed trails through Roche-A-Cri State Park, and dog-friendly beach areas near Lake Arrowhead. Wisconsin State Parks require pets to be leashed (8 feet or shorter) and only allowed in designated pet areas. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any pet fee and ask about their favorite local trails.
dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/parks/rulesCan the RV be delivered right to my campsite in Rome, WI?
Yes, RV delivery Rome WI is one of the most popular options on the platform, especially for first-time renters. Many hosts will drive the RV to your campsite at Lake Arrowhead, Petenwell County Park, or a private cabin driveway, then level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before they leave. To find these listings, toggle the Delivery filter when you search. Delivery fees typically depend on mileage from the host's home base. Pro tip: ask your host about delivery to Buckhorn State Park, a local favorite that is much easier to enjoy when someone else handles the setup.
dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/parks/buckhornHow far can I drive from Rome, WI on a typical RV rental?
You've got serious range from Rome, WI. Hosts set their own mileage policies, and many offer generous daily allowances or even RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is ideal for a flexible Wisconsin road trip. wisconsindot.gov/Pages/travel/road/default.aspxWhere are the best campgrounds near Rome, WI?
Rome sits in the sweet spot of Wisconsin's lake country, with some of the state's best campgrounds within minutes. Top picks for RV camping Rome WI: Lake Arrowhead Campground offers wooded sites with full hookups close to the Lake Arrowhead golf courses; Petenwell County Park has lakeside sites with electric hookups, a swimming beach, and boat launch on massive Lake Petenwell; Buckhorn State Park (about 15 minutes north) offers electric and rustic sites along Castle Rock Lake; and Nepco Lake County Park near Wisconsin Rapids is a quieter family option. dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/parks/buckhorn/campingWhen is the best time to take an RV trip to Rome, WI?
Late May through early October is prime time, but Rome has a personality for every season. Summer (June to August) brings warm 75-82°F days perfect for swimming in Lake Petenwell and Lake Arrowhead. Early fall (mid-September to mid-October) is the local insider's favorite: bug-free, 60-70°F afternoons, and explosive color through the Northwoods. Spring (May) is cooler at 55-65°F but quiet and affordable. Winters are genuinely cold (often below 20°F with snow), so most hosts and campgrounds wind down by early November. Pro tip: book Lake Petenwell weekends 2-3 months ahead. The Fourth of July fireworks over the lake are a Rome tradition that fills sites fast.
weather.gov/grb/I've never rented an RV before. Is Rome a good place to start?
Rome is honestly one of the easiest places in Wisconsin to try your first RV trip. Roads through Adams County are flat, low-traffic, and well-paved, with none of the steep grades or tight switchbacks you'd hit out west. Every RVezy host gives you a full pickup orientation, walking you through the slide-outs, water systems, propane, and dump procedure before you drive off. If you're first time renting an RV, choose a Class C motorhome rental Rome (drives like a big van) or a small travel trailer, and consider a host who offers delivery. Pro tip: book two nights at Lake Arrowhead Campground for an easy shakedown trip with full hookups close to town.
wisconsindot.gov/Pages/safety/safety-eng/large-trucks/default.aspxWhat happens if I break down during my Rome, WI RV trip?
You are never on your own. Every RVezy booking with a protection plan includes 24/7 roadside assistance covering common issues like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing, anywhere in Wisconsin. One phone call gets help on the way to your location, whether you are on Highway 13 near Lake Petenwell or out near Castle Rock Lake. Your host is also just a message away for quick troubleshooting tips on quirks specific to their RV. Pro tip: snap photos of the breaker panel, propane shutoff, and water heater bypass during your pickup walkthrough. It speeds up any phone fix and gets you back to your Rome RV trip faster.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008794-Roadside-assistanceCan I take my Rome, WI RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, interstate travel is easy and common. Most hosts happily let you head into Minnesota, Illinois, Michigan's Upper Peninsula, or Iowa, all reachable from Rome in a half-day's drive. Popular routes from Rome include the Door County peninsula (about 3.5 hours northeast), Mackinac and the U.P. (5-6 hours), and the Mississippi River Great River Road through La Crosse (2 hours). Cross-border travel into Canada may be allowed but depends on the host and protection coverage, so confirm in a message before booking. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. Pro tip: a Door County loop from Rome is the classic Wisconsin RV road trip from Rome week.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goHow much should I budget for fuel on a Rome, WI RV trip?
Easier than you'd think. Wisconsin gas prices typically run a bit below the national average, often around $3.10 to $3.40 per gallon in the Rome and Wisconsin Rapids area. Most Class C motorhomes get 8-12 MPG, travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (12-15 MPG is typical), and a campervan rental Rome WI like a Class B can hit 16-20 MPG. For a 300-mile weekend loop around Lake Petenwell, Wisconsin Dells, and back, plan on roughly $75-$110 in fuel for a Class C. Pro tip: top off in Wisconsin Rapids or Adams before heading deep into county roads, where stations get sparser and prices creep up.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book campgrounds near Rome, WI?
For summer weekends, book early; for weeknights, you've got flexibility. Wisconsin State Park sites at Buckhorn and Roche-A-Cri can be reserved up to 11 months in advance through the Wisconsin DNR reservation system, and lakefront sites at Petenwell County Park fill 2-4 months out for July and August. Lake Arrowhead Campground and private parks often have shorter lead times but still recommend 4-6 weeks for peak weekends. Holiday weekends (Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day) book the earliest. Pro tip: midweek arrivals (Sunday-Wednesday) at Buckhorn State Park often have same-week openings, even in July, perfect for a spontaneous family RV trip Rome WI.
dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/parks/reservationsWhat are the roads like for RV driving around Rome, WI?
Refreshingly easy. The roads around Rome are mostly flat, two-lane country highways and well-maintained county roads, ideal for relaxed RV driving. Highway 13, County Road D, and Highway 73 are the main arteries connecting Rome to Wisconsin Rapids, the Dells, and the Castle Rock/Petenwell lakes. Watch for occasional deer crossings at dawn and dusk (Adams County has plenty), gravel shoulders on smaller roads, and slower farm equipment in spring and fall. Winter can bring snow and ice from late November through March. Pro tip: avoid the narrow boat-launch entrances at smaller county parks with anything over 30 feet. The main Petenwell and Buckhorn entrances handle big rigs with no problem.
511wi.gov/What amenities will I find at campgrounds around Rome, WI?
You'll be well taken care of. Most campgrounds near Rome offer 30 and 50 amp electric, potable water fill stations, dump stations, hot showers, and flush toilets. Lake Arrowhead Campground has full hookups (water, electric, sewer at the site) plus Wi-Fi and a camp store. Petenwell County Park offers electric sites, a centralized dump station, swim beach, and boat launch. Buckhorn State Park provides electric sites and a dump station but no sewer hookups at sites. For where to park an RV in Rome WI overnight off the campground grid, options are limited; stick to designated parks. Pro tip: fill freshwater before leaving the campground, since lake access points don't always have potable water on hand.
dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/parks/campingWhat's typically included inside an RV rental from Rome hosts?
More than you'd expect. Most motorhome rental Rome WI listings come fully equipped: real beds (often sleeping 4-8), a kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, sink and basic cookware, a bathroom with toilet and shower, climate control with furnace and air conditioning, and seatbelted travel seats. Many include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor awning, and onboard generator for off-grid power. Wi-Fi varies. Some hosts include a mobile hotspot, others don't, so check the listing. Linens, towels, and camp chairs are often offered as included or as add-ons. Pro tip: message your host to confirm Lake Petenwell-friendly extras like a bike rack, paddleboard hookup, or screen room before you book.
rvia.org/What add-ons and options can I expect with a Rome RV rental?
Hosts love making your trip easy. Common add-ons for an RV rental in Rome WI include delivery and setup, generator usage, propane refills, linens and towel packages, kitchen kits, outdoor grills, bike racks, kayak carriers, and pet-cleaning fees. Pickup is usually at the host's home base in or near Rome, Nekoosa, or Wisconsin Rapids, and dropoff times are clearly listed; most hosts allow flexible windows on either end. Mileage policies vary, with many offering 100-150 included miles per day and an unlimited mileage option for longer trips. Pro tip: bundle delivery plus a generator add-on for boondocking nights along Castle Rock Lake. Worth every penny of the convenience.
adamscountywi.com/How does payment and the security deposit work for an RV rental in Rome, WI?
Simple, transparent, and fully handled in-app. You pay through RVezy with a credit or debit card at booking, with no cash exchanged with the host. A refundable security deposit (commonly $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV) is pre-authorized on your card separately from your booking payment and released after the trip wraps up cleanly. Final mileage, generator hours, propane refill, and dump fees, if applicable, are settled after the trip. Review the listing's mileage and generator policy, do a thorough walkthrough video at pickup and dropoff, and refill propane and fuel before returning. Pro tip: keep gas station receipts from your Wisconsin Rapids or Adams fill-ups in case any post-trip questions come up.
