Campgrounds and RV parks near Shorewood Hills, WI

Shorewood Hills is a small village on Madison's west side, bordered by Lake Mendota and the University of Wisconsin campus. RV travelers using it as a base can reach a mix of state park, private, and municipal campgrounds within a short drive, most concentrated south and east around the Yahara chain of lakes. The closest full-service option inside the city is Madison Campground, which suits travelers who want to stay near downtown, State Street, and the Capitol. For a traditional state park experience, Lake Kegonsa State Park sits about 15 miles southeast along the shore of a 3,200-acre lake known for excellent fishing, with wooded family sites and a swimming beach. Private parks fill out the region. Badgerland Campground near Stoughton offers water and electrical hookups and pull-through sites, while Crystal Lake Campground and RV Park and Viking Village Campground provide additional lake-oriented choices within roughly an hour's drive. Together these options cover short weekend trips, longer family stays, and events tied to Madison, the university, and the surrounding Dane County lakes.

Wisconsin state parks and private campgrounds use different systems, so plan by property. For Lake Kegonsa State Park, reservations are required and can be made up to 11 months in advance of your planned date of occupancy, online or by calling 1-888-947-2757. A vehicle admission pass is required for any motor vehicles brought into the property in addition to the campsite fee. Private parks handle their own bookings. Badgerland Campground takes reservations online through its website or by phone. Madison Campground, Crystal Lake Campground and RV Park, and Viking Village Campground each maintain direct booking through their own websites. For summer weekends, holidays, and UW event weekends, aim to book several months out. Electric and lake-adjacent sites at Lake Kegonsa go first when the 11-month window opens.
