Campgrounds near Verona, Wisconsin
Verona sits in Dane County just southwest of Madison, in the rolling terrain of southern Wisconsin's Driftless Area. RV renters using Verona as a base have several state park campgrounds within an easy drive, plus private options closer to the city. The closest state park camping is at New Glarus Woods State Park, a small park in the rolling hills of Green County with primitive campsites divided between drive-in and walk-to tent sites.
To the east, Lake Kegonsa State Park features 96 campsites, 29 of which are equipped with electrical hookups, set along a 3,200-acre lake. Blue Mound State Park lies west of Verona atop the highest point in southern Wisconsin, and Madison Campground and Crystal Lake Campground and RV Park round out the options with additional private-park amenities.
Combined, these campgrounds cover the full range from primitive tent-and-small-trailer sites to electric hookups suitable for larger RVs, all within roughly a 30-minute to one-hour drive of Verona.
Things to do near Verona
Water recreation centers on Lake Kegonsa, where visitors use kayaks, canoes, paddleboards, sailboats, and motorboats, and a swimming beach, picnic areas with reservable shelters, and a boat launch are within about a mile of the campground. Hiking is available at each of the nearby state parks, with about five miles of trails at Lake Kegonsa alone.
Cyclists can reach New Glarus and the surrounding countryside via the Sugar River State Trail, a compressed-limestone rail-trail connecting New Glarus to Brodhead that accommodates hiking, biking, and snowmobiling. The trail links directly to New Glarus Woods State Park, making bike-in day trips from a campsite straightforward.
Families staying near Verona also have quick access to downtown Madison, the Wisconsin State Capitol, and the University of Wisconsin Arboretum.

The main camping season at Wisconsin state parks runs from spring through mid-fall. At Lake Kegonsa, the dump station is open during the camping season, between the family camp and the group camp on the main park road, and may be closed in early May and late October depending on weather conditions. New Glarus Woods is more rustic, with vault toilets only and no showers, and facilities are limited outside the summer window.
Summer draws the largest crowds, with weekends and holidays booking out weeks in advance. Advance reservations booked before May 15 for stays between May 15 and October 31 require a minimum two-night reservation, and a minimum three-night reservation is required on holiday weekends. Beach access at Lake Kegonsa can be affected in mid-summer, when blue-green algae blooms occasionally close the swimming beach.
Spring and early fall offer cooler nights, thinner crowds, and better site availability.

How to book campgrounds near Verona
Wisconsin state park sites are reserved through a single system. Camping reservations are required and can be made up to 11 months in advance of the planned date of occupancy, online at wisconsin.goingtocamp.com or by calling 1-888-947-2757. A vehicle admission pass is required for any motor vehicles entering the park in addition to the site fee.
Minimum-stay rules apply during the busy season, and the maximum stay is 14 days. Cancellations are common on popular weekends, so rechecking the reservation site can turn up openings.
Private campgrounds such as Madison Campground and Crystal Lake Campground and RV Park take reservations directly through their own websites and phone lines, and typically offer full hookups and pull-through sites that state parks do not.
What to expect at campgrounds near Verona
State park sites in this area lean rustic. New Glarus Woods sits in the Driftless Area and offers primitive campsites beneath mature hardwoods, with vault toilets only and no showers, and highway noise reaches some sites near County Highway 69. Renters with larger rigs should plan for Lake Kegonsa or a private park instead.
Lake Kegonsa is better suited to RVs. The campground features 96 campsites, 29 with electrical hookups; sites 1-9 and 87-93 are partially wooded, and the rest are heavily wooded. The dump station is between the family camp and the group camp on the main park road, and group campsites are for tents only, with no RVs, trailers or pop-ups allowed.
Expect wooded sites, mosquitoes in summer, and cellular service that can be spotty on busy weekends.

May and October are shoulder-season gold, fewer crowds, lower nightly rates, and easier campsite reservations. Winters get genuinely cold (lows in the teens to single digits, with snow), and most campgrounds close from November to April. Pro tip: book the last weekend of September or first weekend of October for peak foliage in the Driftless Area, it's stunning and far less crowded than Door County.
weather.gov/mkx/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving one around Verona?
Yes, you'll be just fine, first time renting an RV is way less intimidating than it sounds, and Verona is a great launching pad because rural roads west and south of town (think County Road PB toward Mount Horeb) are wide, scenic, and low-stress. Every host on RVezy provides a hands-on walkthrough at pickup, covering driving, hookups, slide-outs, generator, and tank dumping. You can also message your host beforehand with questions. If Madison Beltline traffic worries you, choose a campervan or travel trailer for a smaller footprint, or pick a host who delivers. Pro tip: do your first short drive on Highway 18/151 between Verona and Mount Horeb before any big highway stretch, gentle curves and easy pull-offs make for great practice.
wisconsindot.gov/Pages/safety/safety-eng/work-zones/default.aspxWhat happens if the RV breaks down during my trip?
You're covered: every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so help is just a phone call away whether you're parked outside Verona or deep in the Kettle Moraine. Roadside assistance handles common issues like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, towing, and fuel delivery. Your host is also a direct resource for questions about the specific RV, and RVezy's support team is available before, during, and after every trip. Pro tip: snap photos of the propane tank gauges, tire pressure, and dashboard at pickup, it makes any roadside call faster and helps the technician arrive prepared. Save the roadside number in your phone the moment you confirm the booking.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take a Verona RV rental into other states or to Canada?
Cross-state RV trips are welcome and one of the best parts of renting from Verona. You're a short hop from Illinois (Chicago is about 150 miles southeast), Minnesota (Twin Cities about 270 miles northwest), Iowa (Dubuque about 90 miles southwest), and Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Canadian travel may be allowed by some hosts depending on their insurance, so message the host directly from the listing before booking to confirm. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage does not extend there. Pro tip: the Great River Road along the Mississippi (Highway 35) makes a phenomenal multi-state loop from Verona through Prairie du Chien and into Minnesota, plan 4-5 days to do it right.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel mileage should I budget for?
Budgeting fuel is straightforward once you know the ballpark. Class B campervans typically get 15-20 MPG, Class C motorhomes average 8-12 MPG, Class A motorhomes run 6-10 MPG, and travel trailers depend on the tow vehicle (usually 10-14 MPG combined). Wisconsin gas prices generally hover around the national average, with stations on Verona Avenue and the US-18/151 corridor offering convenient fill-ups before you hit the highway. Diesel is widely available at Kwik Trip and Pilot/Flying J locations near the Madison Beltline. Pro tip: download the GasBuddy app and fuel up at Kwik Trip in Verona or Mount Horeb before heading to Devil's Lake, prices in tourist corridors near the Dells can run 20-30 cents higher per gallon.

For Wisconsin State Parks, the reservation window opens 11 months ahead through the Wisconsin DNR reservation system, and popular spots like Devil's Lake, Blue Mound, and Governor Dodge sell out fast for summer weekends, often within hours of opening. Dane County Parks (Lake Farm, Token Creek, Mendota) open reservations on a rolling basis and tend to be a bit easier to grab. Private parks like Lake of the Woods Campground and Madison KOA usually take bookings 6-12 months out. Pro tip: if you strike out on a Saturday at Devil's Lake, check Wednesday and Thursday arrivals, you'll often find openings, and your RV rental in Verona, WI midweek will be cheaper too.
dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/parks/reservationsWhat are the local driving conditions like around Verona?
Driving around Verona is genuinely pleasant, you're in rolling Driftless Area countryside with quiet two-lane roads like County Highway M, PB, and G that are perfect for getting comfortable behind the wheel. The Madison Beltline (US 12/18/151) can get congested during rush hours (7-9 AM and 4-6 PM weekdays), so plan around it if you can. Winter brings snow and ice from December through March, and summer thunderstorms can roll through quickly. Watch for deer at dawn and dusk on rural roads. Pro tip: avoid driving a tall motorhome through downtown Madison's State Street area; instead use the Beltline and exit closer to your destination, motorhome rental Verona drivers find it much less stressful.

Most campgrounds near Verona offer solid amenities for a comfortable stay. Wisconsin State Parks like Blue Mound and Lake Kegonsa have electric hookups (typically 20/30/50-amp), drinking water spigots, modern restrooms with showers, and dump stations on-site, though full water/sewer hookups at the site are less common at state parks. Private parks like Madison KOA and Lake of the Woods usually offer full hookups, Wi-Fi, laundry, and pools. Dane County Parks like Lake Farm have electric and water with a central dump station. Pro tip: for where to park an RV in Verona between campground stays, the Kwik Trip on Verona Avenue and the Cabela's in Sun Prairie are RV-friendly stops, and most state parks have potable water fill stations open to the public.
dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/parks/camping/facilitiesWhat's actually inside the RV I rent?
You'll be surprised how well-equipped most RVs on RVezy are, this isn't roughing it. Expect real beds (queen in the bedroom, often a convertible dinette and bunk options), a kitchen with stove, fridge, microwave, sink, and basic cookware, a bathroom with shower and toilet, climate control with furnace and air conditioning, and dining/lounge seating. Many listings include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor awning, camp chairs, and a generator for off-grid power. Seatbelts are present for all designated travel seats. Wi-Fi varies, some hosts include a hotspot. Pro tip: when comparing a campervan rental Verona option versus a Class C, check the sleeps count and the bathroom setup, family RV trip Verona travelers usually prefer a Class C for the dedicated bedroom and standing-height shower.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Verona%2C%20WisconsinWhat add-ons and pickup options should I look for?
Popular add-ons make your trip dramatically easier. Common options include bedding and linen packages, kitchen kits, generators or extra propane, bike racks, kayaks, outdoor grills, and camping chairs. Many Verona-area hosts also offer delivery (priced per mile or as a flat fee to local campgrounds like Lake Farm or Blue Mound), which is gold for first-timers. Pickup is usually at the host's home in Verona, Fitchburg, or nearby Madison suburbs, and orientation walkthroughs typically last 30-60 minutes. Mileage policies vary by listing, with many hosts offering daily allowances or unlimited-mileage options. Pro tip: ask about a pre-stocked propane tank and the fuel return policy in your first message, it saves time at both ends of your trip.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Verona%2C%20WisconsinHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and handled entirely through RVezy, no cash, no checks, no awkward exchanges with the host. You'll pay your booking total (nightly rate, fees, and your chosen protection plan) securely through the platform when you confirm. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment, with the amount set per listing, and it's released back to you after the trip assuming no damage or policy violations like exceeding mileage or returning with a dirty tank. Pro tip: do a thorough walkthrough video at both pickup and drop-off (interior, exterior, tires, tanks), it's the single best way to protect your deposit and keep your Verona RV rental experience smooth from start to finish.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksAre there overnight RV parking options in the Verona area besides campgrounds?
Yes, you have a few solid backup options around Verona for a quick overnight. Wisconsin DOT rest areas along I-90/94 allow overnight parking for travelers needing rest, though they're meant for short stays, not extended camping. Some Walmart and Cabela's locations in the Madison metro (like the Walmart in Monona or Cabela's in Sun Prairie) traditionally allow overnight RV parking with manager permission, always call ahead. Cracker Barrel in Madison is another known RV-friendly stop. For actual camping, stick to designated campgrounds; the City of Verona doesn't allow overnight RV parking on public streets. Pro tip: if you're rolling in late, Lake Farm County Park has a self-registration option after hours, making it one of the easiest late-arrival options in Dane County.
