Campgrounds and RV parks near Fort Washakie, WY

Fort Washakie sits on the Wind River Indian Reservation in west-central Wyoming, at the foot of the Wind River Range. It serves as headquarters of the tribes' government and the Bureau of Indian Affairs Wind River Agency, and is the center of community life for the Eastern Shoshone people. The town is a practical base for RV travellers routing between Yellowstone, Grand Teton, and Wyoming's central basin, with paved access via US 287. Campground options cluster around Fort Washakie and the nearby town of Lander, roughly fifteen miles southeast. Full-hookup RV parks in the corridor include Holiday Lodge Motel and Campground, Sleeping Bear RV Park and Campground, Mountain Range RV Park, and Twin Pines RV Park and Campgrounds. For a more rustic setting, Sawmill - Sinks Canyon State Park sits inside the canyon southwest of Lander along the Popo Agie River. Mountains block moisture from the Pacific, creating a semi-arid climate, and the reservation is home to the Eastern Shoshone and Northern Arapaho Tribes, the only reservation in the country where two separate federally recognized tribes reside. Public lands surrounding the reservation include Shoshone National Forest and Sinks Canyon State Park, both within a short drive.

Private RV parks around Fort Washakie and Lander, including Holiday Lodge Motel and Campground, Sleeping Bear RV Park and Campground, Mountain Range RV Park, and Twin Pines RV Park and Campgrounds, are booked directly with the operator by phone or website. Availability tightens sharply for the Eastern Shoshone Indian Days Powwow in June and through July, so reserving weeks ahead is advised. Sinks Canyon State Park sites use Wyoming's central reservation system at reserve.wyoming.gov, with a call center reachable at 1-877-996-7275. Wyoming residents can book up to 120 days prior to arrival, and non-residents up to 113 days prior to arrival. Shoshone National Forest sites are handled through Recreation.gov, though many are first-come, first-served. Only a portion of forest sites in the area are reservable online; the rest fill in the morning during peak weeks.
