Generator Care (Onan Air-Cooled) Check the oil every 8 hours. These generators are air cooled and normally burn oil — up to 1 oz/hour — so levels drop fast with heavy use. Low oil is the #1 reason a generator shuts down; this is not a malfunction, it's normal upkeep. To check: make sure the generator is level and cool, then screw the dipstick all the way in before reading. If the oil is low, top it off before running further — this resolves the shutdown immediately. Do not overfill or this will also make it shut down.
