2020 Grand River Travel Trailer
Our anniversary adventure was made possible by Lowell and his beautiful trailer. Nervous at first, Lowell helped make our first trailer experience the best one possible. Starting with perfect detail in the advertisement, followed by exceptional communication, my husband and I were immediately at ease with our decision. The trailer is an easy tow, and was a smooth transition to our destination. We were provided accurate information on how to set it up properly, which helped make the whole process easy with no issues. Our home away from home allowed us to have our best vacation to date. After 16 years together, we were finally able to see the northern lights. We admired the most beautiful sunsets and walked some of the most incredible trails. This trailer provided us safety at nights, (with wandering animals passing by) gave us warmth in the cold evenings, and made us feel comfortable and at home. We could not have imagined a better experience and are already planning our next getaway. If you are looking to experience a stress-free vacation Lowell and his trailer are the best choice. (Special thank you to Henry too!)

Frequently asked questions about renting an RV in Wawa, ON

How much does an RV rental in Wawa, ON typically cost?

Great news: an RV rental in Wawa, ON is one of the most affordable ways to experience the wild north shore of Lake Superior. On RVezy, travel trailers typically start around $90 to $150 CAD per night, Class C motorhomes range from roughly $200 to $300 per night, and larger Class A rigs run $250 to $400. Because Wawa sees a short, busy summer season, you'll find the best value by booking shoulder-season dates in early June or late September. Filter by 'Instant Book' to see live pricing and use the price slider to find a cheap RV rental Wawa families love. Pro tip: hosts who include generators or kayaks at no extra charge are gold for this lakeside region.

What kind of driver's license do I need to rent an RV in Wawa?

Good news for most travellers: a standard full Class G Ontario licence (or its equivalent from your home province or country) is all you need to rent an RV in Wawa for any motor home up to 11,000 kg, which covers the vast majority of Class B, Class C, travel trailer, and fifth wheel listings on RVezy. You'll need to be at least 25 years old to book, and ID is verified directly through the RVezy platform. Visiting from overseas? Bring an International Driving Permit alongside your home licence. If you're eyeing a large Class A diesel pusher with air brakes, message the host first to confirm requirements. Then it's just Highway 17 and the Wawa Goose ahead.

What if I need to cancel my Wawa RV trip?

Plans change, and RVezy is built to handle it. Cancellation policies are set by RVezy (not individual hosts), and every booking includes a grace-period window where you can cancel for a full refund right after booking. After that, refund amounts depend on how close you are to your trip start date. Because the cancellation policy applies platform-wide, you won't see it on individual listings. If a host cancels on you, RVezy refunds you in full or offers travel credit. Book your Wawa RV trip with confidence, and our support team is one click away if life happens.

Can I bring my dog on a Wawa RV trip?

Absolutely, and Wawa is dreamy for dogs. Plenty of hosts offer a pet-friendly RV rental Wawa travellers love, so just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to see them instantly. Dogs are welcome on-leash at most Ontario Parks, including Lake Superior Provincial Park (Agawa Bay and Rabbit Blanket Lake Campground both have designated pet areas), plus on trails around Wawa Lake and at Scenic High Falls. Sandy Beach, just minutes from the Wawa Goose, offers wide-open shoreline perfect for a tired-out retriever. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any pet fees or size limits, and pack a towel because Lake Superior is famously chilly even in August.

Can the RV be delivered to my campsite in Wawa?

Yes, and it's the easiest way to start a Northern Ontario adventure. Many RVezy hosts offer RV delivery Wawa visitors love, dropping the rig right at Wawa RV Resort & Campground on the Magpie River, Rabbit Blanket Lake Campground in Lake Superior Provincial Park, or your private cottage road off Highway 17. The host levels it, hooks up power and water, and walks you through every system before handing over the keys, so you never have to back into a tight wooded site yourself. Filter by 'Delivery' on RVezy to see hosts who offer it and their delivery range. This is especially helpful if you're flying into Sault Ste. Marie and don't want to drive 2.5 hours north in an unfamiliar rig.

How far can I drive on a Wawa RV trip?

You can roam as far as your wanderlust takes you. Each RVezy listing shows the host's daily mileage allowance, and many Wawa hosts offer generous limits or even RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is perfect because Wawa sits at the crossroads of epic Northern Ontario routes. From Wawa you're roughly 230 km south to Sault Ste. Marie along the legendary Lake Superior Coastal Drive, about 320 km north to White River and the gateway to Pukaskwa National Park, around 690 km west to Thunder Bay, and about 680 km east to Sudbury. The full Lake Superior Circle Tour clocks in around 2,100 km. Pick a host with the right mileage package for your loop and you'll never feel rushed pulling over for waterfalls.

Where are the best campgrounds near Wawa?

You're spoiled for choice with some of Ontario's most scenic camping right here. The best campgrounds near Wawa include Wawa RV Resort & Campground on the Magpie River (80 sites with 30/50-amp full hook-ups, heated pool, and laundry, five minutes west of town off Highway 17), Rabbit Blanket Lake Campground in Lake Superior Provincial Park (60 quiet inland sites, 20 with electrical, about 25 minutes south), Agawa Bay Campground (long sandy beach on Lake Superior with an interpretive centre), Naturally Superior Adventures near the Michipicoten River mouth, and Pancake Bay Provincial Park about 1.5 hours south. Pro tip: Ontario Parks sites at Agawa Bay are gorgeous but book up fast, so plan ahead for that RV camping Wawa magic.

When is the best time to visit Wawa in an RV?

Wawa shines from mid-June through mid-September, when daytime highs sit comfortably between 18 and 25 °C and the long northern daylight stretches past 9 p.m. July and August are the warmest and busiest months and the only stretch you can swim (briefly) in Lake Superior. Late May and early June bring fewer crowds and cheaper rates, but black flies peak then, so pack a bug net. September is the local insider's secret: blazing maple and birch fall colour along the Coastal Drive, crisp nights perfect for campfires, and a real shot at the northern lights since the area sits under dark skies recognized by the Royal Astronomical Society. Most campgrounds wind down by mid to late October.

I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay in Wawa?

You'll be more than okay, you'll be hooked. First time renting an RV in Wawa is genuinely easy because every RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup, covering the propane, fresh-water, grey/black tanks, generator, slide-outs, and hookups, plus a phone number you can text mid-trip with questions. Wawa's wide, lightly-trafficked Highway 17 is one of the most forgiving places in Ontario to learn the feel of a big rig (you'll often see more moose than cars). Start with a smaller Class C or campervan if you're nervous, message the host with any questions before booking, and ask for delivery to your campground so your first drive is a short one. You've got this.
ontario.ca/page/driving-recreational-vehicle-rv

What happens if something goes wrong with the RV on the road?

Help is always one call away. Every RV rental in Wawa, ON booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, covering flat tires, lockouts, battery boosts, mechanical breakdowns, and towing, which matters when you're on a stretch of Highway 17 with limited cell service between Wawa and Marathon. Your host is also a direct text away for quirks specific to their rig. Pro tip: before you leave Wawa, top up fuel and download offline maps for the Lake Superior Coastal Drive, because data drops between White River and Marathon. With these backups in place, that remote-feeling adventure feels a lot less remote.

Can I drive my Wawa rental into the United States?

Cross-border road trips from Wawa are absolutely possible: the Sault Ste. Marie International Bridge is just 2.5 hours south, opening up a stunning RV road trip from Wawa through Michigan's Upper Peninsula along the U.S. side of the Lake Superior Circle Tour (Tahquamenon Falls, Pictured Rocks, and Marquette). To make it happen, message the host directly from the listing before booking to confirm U.S. travel is approved, because insurance must be extended across the border. Bring a valid passport for every traveller, and note that travel to Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental. Many Wawa-area hosts say yes to U.S. trips for the classic Circle Tour, so just ask up front and the world opens up.

What should I budget for fuel on a Wawa RV trip?

Fuel is the single biggest variable on a Wawa RV trip, but it's easy to plan for. Expect roughly 8 to 12 mpg (about 20 to 30 L/100 km) for most Class C motorhomes, 6 to 10 mpg for Class A, and 12 to 18 mpg for campervans and tow setups. Gas in Wawa typically runs a bit higher than southern Ontario because of its remote location, so fill up in Sault Ste. Marie before heading north when you can. The 460-km Sault Ste. Marie to Wawa to Marathon stretch has gas stations at Montreal River Harbour, Wawa, and White River, but they can close early, so top up at half a tank. Budget around $0.20 to $0.30 per kilometre for fuel as a rule of thumb.
ontario.ca/page/gasoline-prices

How far in advance should I book a campground near Wawa?

Book sooner than you think. Ontario Parks releases campsites at exactly 7:00 a.m. ET, five months in advance of your arrival date, through reservations.ontarioparks.ca or 1-888-668-7275, and prime electrical sites at Agawa Bay and Rabbit Blanket Lake in Lake Superior Provincial Park go fast for July and August long weekends. Private parks like Wawa RV Resort & Campground take direct bookings on their websites and tend to have more flexibility, though they still fill on Civic Holiday weekend in early August. Pro tip: log in a few minutes early on your launch date, sync your computer clock to the Ontario Parks system clock, and have backup sites ready. Sign up for 'Notify Me' alerts for cancellations.

What are the driving conditions like around Wawa?

Highway 17 between Sault Ste. Marie and Wawa is one of Canada's most beautiful drives, and also one of its most dynamic, so plan smart. The two-lane Trans-Canada hugs Lake Superior through Lake Superior Provincial Park with sweeping curves, rolling hills, granite cuts, and a few steep grades like Montreal River Hill (an 11% downhill that demands engine braking in a motorhome). Moose are a genuine hazard at dawn, dusk, and after dark, so aim to wrap up driving before sunset. Cell service is patchy north of Batchawana Bay until you reach Wawa. In winter, lake-effect snow squalls can drop visibility quickly. Drive in daylight, keep your fuel above half, and enjoy what locals call the best windshield view in Ontario.

What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Wawa?

You'll find more than you'd expect this far north. Wawa RV Resort & Campground offers 30/50-amp full hook-ups, pull-throughs, a dump station, potable water fill, free WiFi, a heated pool, hot tub, sauna, laundry, and clean showers right on the Magpie River. Ontario Parks sites at Lake Superior Provincial Park (Rabbit Blanket Lake and Agawa Bay) provide comfort stations with flush toilets and showers, electrical sites, a trailer dump station, and potable water fill stations (no hookups directly to taps). Where to dump an RV in Wawa: Wawa RV Resort and both Lake Superior Provincial Park campgrounds have public dump stations. Pro tip: stock up at Young's General Store in town for groceries, firewood, and that classic Wawa souvenir before heading into the park.

What's typically included inside a Wawa RV rental?

You'll be pleasantly surprised at how turnkey it is. Most motorhome rental Wawa listings on RVezy come fully equipped with a queen or king bed, convertible dinette and sofa beds, a kitchen with fridge/freezer, stove, microwave, sink, cookware, dishes, and utensils, a bathroom with toilet and shower, air conditioning, furnace, propane, and seatbelts for everyone who sleeps inside. Many include a generator (helpful for boondocking near Lake Superior where hookups are scarce), outdoor chairs, a BBQ, and a hose and sewer kit. WiFi and TV vary by host, but every listing's amenity list is shown clearly on the page, so you'll know exactly what's included before you book.
rvezy.com/

What add-ons and pickup options can I expect when I rent an RV in Wawa?

Wawa hosts make it easy to customize your trip. Common add-ons include kayaks and SUPs (popular for the Magpie River and Lake Superior), generators, BBQs, bike racks, camp chairs, fishing gear, linens and towel packages, and fully-stocked kitchen kits, with fees usually ranging from $10 to $50 each. Pickup is typically at the host's home in or just outside Wawa, with a 45 to 60-minute walkthrough included, and many offer delivery to nearby campgrounds for a flat fee based on distance. Mileage policies vary, so check the listing for daily kilometres included and per-km overage rates. Pro tip: ask for the kayak add-on. Paddling the Magpie River at sunrise is a quintessential Wawa moment you won't forget.

How does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?

Payment is simple, secure, and all online. When you book a campervan rental Wawa trip through RVezy, you pay the full rental amount by credit card directly on the platform (never cash to the host), and funds are held safely until your trip begins. Each host sets a refundable security deposit that's pre-authorized on your card shortly before pickup and released within a few days of drop-off once the rig is returned clean, undamaged, and on time. To avoid issues, take date-stamped photos of the RV inside and out at pickup and drop-off, return with the fuel and propane levels noted in the contract, and dump the tanks before bringing it back. Easy.

Can I rent an RV in Wawa in winter or shoulder season?

Yes, and a winter Wawa RV trip is unforgettable for the right adventurer. Some Wawa hosts keep four-season rigs available October through April, equipped with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, propane furnaces, and shore-power hookups, so you can chase the northern lights over Lake Superior without freezing your pipes. Daytime temperatures from November through March commonly sit between -5 and -20 °C, with deep snow and the magical chance of seeing pack ice on the lake. Use the date filter on RVezy to see which Wawa listings are available in your target month, and message hosts to confirm winterization, snow tires, and whether your campsite has 30-amp shore power (Wawa RV Resort and some private parks stay partially open). Embrace it. Northern Ontario in winter is its own kind of beautiful.
