Wonderful across the board. The RV was clean, drove perfectly (mountains of Colorado and New Mexico), and was impeccably organized. They have clearly thought through all the things that might be needed on a long trip and made them easily accessible. The toilet cassette was easy to empty (particularly in a latrine -- 3-5 minutes with no mess). The refrigerator and cabinets have plenty of space and beds were comfortable. It was easy to stop and sleep overnight in parks. We were really pleased and would happily rent this RV again.

Frequently asked questions about renting an RV in Riverside, IL

How much does it cost to rent an RV in Riverside, IL?

An RV rental in Riverside, IL is one of the most affordable ways to explore the Chicago suburbs. On RVezy, expect roughly $90 to $175 per night for travel trailers, $125 to $225 for Class C motorhomes, and $200 to $350 for larger Class A coaches. Pricing depends on the age, size, and amenities of the RV. Since Riverside sits just 12 miles west of downtown Chicago, you can keep costs down by booking midweek, traveling in shoulder season (April or late September), and choosing a host with included generator hours. Filtering by price range and Instant Book also surfaces cheap RV rental Riverside options quickly. Pro tip: many local hosts include camp chairs and kitchen kits in the base rate, saving you a packing trip.

What kind of driver's license do I need to rent an RV in Riverside, IL?

Great news for first-timers: your regular Class D driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Riverside for most rigs on RVezy. Illinois only requires an upgraded non-commercial license for personal RVs with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) over 16,000 pounds, and the vast majority of travel trailers, campervans, and Class C motorhomes you'll book here fall well under that. Out-of-state guests are covered by their home-state license under standard reciprocity. You must be 25 or older to book, and RVezy verifies your ID securely through the platform during checkout. That's it, no CDL, no special endorsement, no DMV trip. Most renters are surprised how quick the process is, often confirmed within minutes.

Is my RV rental protected if something goes wrong on my trip?

Yes. Every booking on RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit the road from Riverside with real peace of mind. You choose the level of protection that fits you best during checkout (hosts don't pick it, you do), and it covers most physical damage to the vehicle during your trip. With Chicago-area traffic and tight forest preserve parking lots, that built-in safety net matters. Pro tip: review the protection options carefully at booking, the higher tier is often only a few dollars more per night and provides meaningful added coverage.

What happens if I need to cancel my Riverside RV rental?

Booking is low-risk. RVezy sets its own cancellation policy that applies across every listing, including a grace period right after booking so you can lock in your dates with confidence. After that window, refunds depend on how far ahead of your trip you cancel. Cancellation terms aren't set by individual hosts and aren't shown on each listing, they're handled directly by RVezy. If plans shift, just open your booking and start the cancellation from there, or contact RVezy support. That flexibility is a big reason first-time renters feel comfortable booking early to secure the best rigs near Riverside.

Can I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Riverside?

Absolutely, pet-friendly RV rental Riverside options are easy to find on RVezy, just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter when browsing. Many local hosts welcome dogs (some charge a small pet fee or refundable cleaning deposit), and the Riverside area is a dream for dog owners. The Salt Creek Trail runs right through the village, and the adjacent Cook County Forest Preserves, like Brookfield Woods and Salt Creek Woods, have miles of leashed-dog trails. Bring a tie-out, a portable water bowl, and a copy of vaccination records if you're heading to a private campground. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm pet rules and ask about nearby fenced dog runs, the Riverside Lawn off-leash area is a local favorite.

Can the RV be delivered to my campground or driveway in Riverside?

Yes, and this is a game-changer if you're nervous about driving a big rig through Chicago-area traffic. Many RVezy hosts offer RV delivery in Riverside, towing or driving the RV directly to your campground, driveway, or a Cook County Forest Preserve site, then setting it up, leveling it, hooking up utilities, and walking you through everything. Filter listings by Delivery to see who offers it and how far they go (many cover destinations within 50 to 100 miles of Riverside, including Starved Rock, Illinois Beach State Park, and Chain O' Lakes). Delivery fees are usually based on round-trip mileage. Pro tip: delivery is especially popular for first-timers booking a family RV trip from Riverside, you skip the city driving entirely.

How does mileage work, and how far can I realistically drive from Riverside?

Most hosts include a set number of free miles per night (typically 100 to 150), with extra miles available at a per-mile rate, and a handful offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, perfect for an RV road trip from Riverside. From the village you're within easy reach of incredible destinations: Starved Rock State Park is about 90 miles southwest, Indiana Dunes National Park sits 65 miles east, Wisconsin Dells is 190 miles north, the Mississippi River at Galena is 170 miles west, and Mackinac Bridge in Michigan is about 400 miles. Where are the best campgrounds near Riverside, IL?

You're spoiled for choice. Best campgrounds near Riverside, IL include Bullfrog Lake Campground in Willow Springs (just 10 miles south, run by the Forest Preserves of Cook County with electric RV sites right on the water), Camp Bullfrog Lake's neighboring sites, Chicago Northwest KOA in Union (about 50 miles northwest, full-hookup family resort), Illinois Beach State Park in Zion (60 miles north on Lake Michigan with 240 electric sites), and Starved Rock area campgrounds near Utica (90 miles southwest, near the canyons and waterfalls). For a quick getaway, Bullfrog Lake is the closest RV camping Riverside option. Pro tip: Cook County Forest Preserve campsites can be reserved through their official site and tend to book out fast on summer weekends.

When is the best time to take an RV trip from Riverside?

Late May through early October is prime time for a Riverside RV trip, with the absolute sweet spots being late May to mid-June and September. Summer highs in Riverside average 75°F to 80°F, with July topping out around 84°F and humidity peaking in July and August. Spring kicks off RV season as state parks reopen most reservable sites May 1, and fall delivers gorgeous color along the Illinois River and Starved Rock canyons through mid-October. Winters are genuinely cold (January averages 19°F to 29°F with snow), so most campgrounds close water service by November. Pro tip: book a September week if you want warm days, cool nights, fewer crowds, and lower nightly rates from local hosts.

I've never rented an RV before. Will I really be okay?

You'll be great. First time renting an RV is much easier than people expect, especially in Riverside where most hosts cater to beginners. Every RVezy booking includes a hands-on orientation at pickup: the host walks you through driving, leveling, hookups, the propane system, slide-outs, the toilet, and the generator before you leave. You can also message the host with questions before you book, and RVezy support is available to help. If Chicago-area driving feels intimidating, choose delivery and skip it entirely. Pro tip: pick a Class C motorhome or a small travel trailer for your first trip, they drive like a large van or pickup. Local hosts often recommend an easy first stop like Bullfrog Lake to get comfortable.

What if I break down or have an issue on the road?

You're never on your own. Every RVezy booking comes with 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, covering things like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing, whether you're on the Tri-State Tollway, on backroads near Starved Rock, or parked at Illinois Beach State Park. One call gets help dispatched to your location. Your host is also a direct resource and usually responds within minutes if you have a question about a quirk of the rig. Pro tip: before you leave Riverside, snap photos during the orientation, save the roadside number in your phone, and confirm your spare tire location.

Can I take my RV rental across state lines or into Canada from Riverside?

Yes, interstate travel from Riverside is welcome, and it's one of the best perks of an RV rental Illinois trip. Wisconsin (Milwaukee in about 90 minutes, the Dells in roughly 3 hours), Indiana Dunes (just over an hour), Michigan's lakeshore, Iowa, and Missouri are all easy reaches. Cross-border travel into Canada may be permitted depending on the host and the protection plan selected, so message them before booking to confirm and discuss paperwork. Travel into Mexico is not allowed on any RVezy rental due to insurance coverage limits. Pro tip: a popular weeklong loop from Riverside hits Indiana Dunes, then Sleeping Bear Dunes in Michigan, then back via the Wisconsin lakefront, roughly 900 scenic miles.

What should I budget for fuel on a Riverside RV trip?

Budgeting is straightforward once you know the numbers. Travel trailers don't burn fuel themselves but bump your tow vehicle's mileage down to roughly 10 to 14 mpg, Class C motorhomes average 8 to 12 mpg, and big Class A coaches run 6 to 10 mpg. Illinois gas prices typically run a bit above the national average thanks to state fuel taxes, so plan around current Chicago-area pump prices when estimating. For a typical 300-mile weekend loop from Riverside out to Starved Rock and back in a Class C, expect roughly $90 to $140 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up in the suburbs west of Riverside (LaGrange, Westmont) where prices often run lower than in Cook County proper, and avoid topping off in downtown Chicago.

How far in advance should I book a campground near Riverside?

Earlier is better, but you have options either way. Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) state park campsites can be reserved up to 6 months in advance through the ExploreMoreIL reservation portal, and popular spots like Starved Rock, Illinois Beach, and Chain O' Lakes sell out fast for summer weekends and fall color season. Cook County Forest Preserve campgrounds like Bullfrog Lake also book up quickly from Memorial Day through Labor Day. For private parks (KOAs, Jellystone, Yogi Bear), aim for 2 to 3 months ahead in peak season. Many sites hold first-come, first-served spots too. Pro tip: target a Sunday-through-Thursday stay, midweek availability near Riverside is dramatically better and rates are lower.
dnr.illinois.gov/parks/camp/reservation-information.html

What are driving conditions like in and around Riverside?

Riverside itself is calm, leafy, and easy to drive thanks to its famous Olmsted-designed curving streets, but you're surrounded by major Chicago arteries: I-290 (the Eisenhower), I-55, I-294 (the Tri-State), and the Stevenson are all minutes away. Rush hours (7 to 9 a.m. and 3 to 7 p.m.) get heavy, so plan your departure for mid-morning or after 7 p.m. Watch for low railroad underpasses in nearby Brookfield and Berwyn, some clear only 11 feet, and most Class A motorhomes need at least 12 to 13 feet. Winter brings ice and lake-effect snow; summer brings pop-up thunderstorms. Pro tip: route via I-294 to bypass downtown when heading north or east, it's the easiest big-rig route out of the metro.
idot.illinois.gov/travel-information.html

What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Riverside?

You'll find a great mix. Cook County Forest Preserve sites like Bullfrog Lake offer 30/50-amp electric, potable water spigots, shower buildings, flush toilets, fire rings, picnic tables, and an on-site dump station. Illinois state parks (Illinois Beach, Chain O' Lakes, Starved Rock area) typically have electric sites, shower houses, and dump stations, though full sewer hookups are mostly at private parks. KOAs and Jellystones in the region usually offer full hookups, Wi-Fi, pools, and propane refills. Most public sites turn water off from late October through April. Pro tip: top up fresh water at your campground before checkout, the nearest public RV dump stations to Riverside include those at Bullfrog Lake and several Pilot/Flying J truck stops along I-80 and I-55.
fpdcc.com/places/campgrounds/

What's actually inside an RV rental from Riverside?

More than you'd think. A typical motorhome rental Riverside listing includes real beds (queen in the bedroom, often a convertible dinette and over-cab bunk in Class Cs), a kitchen with stove, microwave, fridge/freezer, and sink, a wet or dry bathroom with toilet and shower, climate control (roof AC and propane furnace), seatbelted passenger seats, exterior storage, and an awning. Most include a generator for off-grid power, and many hosts add a TV, Bluetooth speakers, and a Wi-Fi hotspot. Campervan rental Riverside options are more compact but still pack in a bed, kitchenette, and often a cassette toilet. Pro tip: filter by Sleeps count to match your group, and check listing photos for must-haves like an outdoor shower or solar panels.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Riverside,%20Illinois

What add-ons and pickup options should I expect when I rent an RV in Riverside?

Hosts make it easy to customize. Popular add-ons for an RV rental in Riverside, IL include bedding and linen packages ($25 to $75), kitchen kits, camp chairs and tables, generators or extra generator hours, bikes, kayaks, propane top-offs, portable grills, and Wi-Fi hotspots. Pickup is usually at the host's home in Riverside, Brookfield, Berwyn, LaGrange, or nearby suburbs, with delivery available to your campground or driveway for a mileage-based fee. Mileage policies vary, typically 100 to 150 free miles per night, and pet fees run $25 to $75 per trip. Pro tip: book add-ons at the time of reservation rather than at pickup, hosts can prep everything in advance.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Riverside,%20Illinois

How do payments and the security deposit work on RVezy?

Payment is simple and secure: you pay through RVezy directly with a credit card at booking, never in cash to the host. Your nightly rate, protection plan, taxes, and any selected add-ons are itemized clearly before you confirm. A refundable security deposit is held separately (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV) and released after the trip once the host confirms the RV came back in the same condition it left. To avoid any deposit issues, do the pre-trip walkaround with your host, take date-stamped photos of the exterior and interior, and return with the same fuel and propane levels. Pro tip: keep receipts for dump fees and fuel, hosts appreciate the transparency and turnarounds go faster.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-works

Can I rent an RV from Riverside in winter, and is cold-weather camping doable?

Yes, winter rentals are available and can be a genuine adventure. Some Riverside-area hosts list four-season RVs with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and strong propane furnaces, ideal for shoulder-season trips to Starved Rock for frozen-waterfall hikes or to Lake Geneva, WI. Many Illinois state park campgrounds remain open year-round but shut off water from roughly November through April, so you'll rely on your fresh water tank and plan dump stops accordingly. Bring extra propane, a heated water hose if you'll be on hookups, and warm bedding. Daytime January highs around Riverside average around 29 degrees F. Pro tip: filter for RVs marketed as winter-ready, and ask the host about skirting and tank heaters before booking.
