Late May through early October is the best window for RV travel, when the campground, swimming pool, and observation towers are open and area roads are clear. June and September offer pleasant temperatures and lighter crowds, while July and August are peak season and reservations fill quickly. Spring and fall shoulder seasons bring cool nights and excellent hiking weather, but the pool and some seasonal services may be closed. Winter visits focus on day-use cross-country skiing and snowshoeing rather than camping.

Two observation towers at Blue Mound State Park let visitors look out over the surrounding Driftless Area from the highest point in southern Wisconsin. Short paved or graveled paths lead to each tower from nearby parking areas, making them accessible to most visitors.
The park's hiking trail system loops through hardwood forest and open meadows along the summit ridge. Routes such as the Indian Marker Tree Trail and Pleasure Valley Trail offer a mix of short scenic walks and longer connector loops.
Blue Mound is well known among Wisconsin riders for its purpose-built mountain bike trails on the slopes of the mound. Trails range from flowy intermediate loops to more technical descents and connect to the campground area.
Blue Mound is one of the few Wisconsin state parks with a swimming pool, a welcome stop on hot summer afternoons. The pool is open seasonally and located near the family campground.
The Military Ridge State Trail passes near the base of the mound and runs roughly 40 miles between Dodgeville and Fitchburg. Cyclists can drop down from the park to access this crushed-limestone rail trail through farmland and small towns.
In winter, the park grooms cross-country ski trails and allows snowshoeing on designated routes. Day-use parking is plowed even when the campground is closed for the season.
Cave of the Mounds, a National Natural Landmark, is located just minutes from the park entrance in the village of Blue Mounds. Guided tours through the limestone cave make a popular rainy-day activity for RV travelers.
Ross was great to work with & the experience exceeded our expectations! He was very accommodating with pick up- we live out of state and ran into unexpected delays on our way to pick up. The rental was very clean, came stocked with anything we needed, and was a very pleasant experience. We will be repeat renters!

Blue Mound State Park, WI, United States
From Madison, the park is roughly a 30 minute drive west via US-18/151 to the village of Blue Mounds, then a short climb on local roads to the summit. Milwaukee is about 110 miles east, around two hours by RV. The final approach to the campground includes a steep, winding park road, so larger rigs should downshift, watch for low overhanging branches on side roads, and use caution on the descent. Dane County Regional Airport in Madison is the nearest major airport for fly-and-rent travelers.
