Spring (March through May) and fall (October through November) are the most comfortable times to visit, with mild daytime temperatures, lower humidity, and active fishing on the lake. Summer brings hot, humid weather with highs often in the mid 90s F, and the swim beach and shaded sites are in heavy demand on weekends, so reserve early. Winter is mild but can bring brief cold snaps and occasional freezes, while the park stays open year-round for RV camping. Wildflowers along park roads peak in April.

Bonham State Park's lake is stocked for largemouth bass, catfish, crappie, and sunfish and can be fished from the shoreline, a fishing pier, or a small boat. No fishing license is required when fishing from shore inside a Texas state park.
A designated sandy swim area on the lake offers a cool break during hot North Texas summers. Swimming is at your own risk with no lifeguards on duty.
The lake is ideal for kayaks, canoes, and stand-up paddleboards on calm water with no wake restrictions. Small electric trolling motors are allowed for fishing boats.
Several miles of multi-use trails wind through woodlands and around the lake shoreline. Trails are mostly flat with short rolling sections, suitable for casual hikers and beginner mountain bikers.
The park's mix of woodland, prairie, and lake habitat attracts white-tailed deer, raccoons, and a wide variety of songbirds and waterfowl. Early morning and dusk are the best viewing times near the lakeshore.
Shaded day-use picnic areas built by the Civilian Conservation Corps overlook the lake and offer tables and grills. Several sites are accessible from paved parking suitable for tow vehicles after dropping the RV at camp.
The park's rural North Texas location keeps light pollution low compared with the DFW metro, making for solid stargazing on clear nights. Several geocaches are hidden along park trails and around the lake.
