Buescher State Park, TX, United States
From Austin, the park is about 40 miles southeast, a drive of roughly 50 minutes via SH 71 to FM 153 near Smithville. Houston sits about 125 miles east, around two and a half hours via US 290 and SH 71. Access roads are low-traffic paved highways with no major grades or tunnels, but Park Road 1C between Buescher and Bastrop is narrow, winding, and steep in places, so large rigs may prefer FM 153 and SH 71 instead. Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) is the closest major airport for fly-and-rent trips.
Late fall through early spring, roughly October to April, is the best window for RV travel, with mild days, cooler nights, and fewer biting insects. Wildflowers peak in March and April, making spring especially popular, so reservations fill quickly on weekends. Summer brings heat, humidity, and afternoon thunderstorms, though shaded pine-oak sites offer relief. Winter is quiet and generally mild, with occasional cold fronts but rare hard freezes.

The park's signature hiking route is a roughly 7.7-mile network of connected loops through pine and hardwood forest. Trailheads near the lake and group camp offer paved RV-accessible parking. Expect rolling terrain, occasional ravines, and good birdwatching along the way. tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/buescher
The approximately 30-acre park lake is open to no-license-required fishing for bass, catfish, and sunfish from the bank, pier, or non-motorized boats. Kayaks, canoes, and paddleboards are allowed, and gas motors are prohibited to keep the lake quiet. Parking and a small boat ramp are near the day-use area. tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/buescher
A 12-mile paved connector links Buescher to Bastrop State Park through the Lost Pines. The drive is popular with road cyclists and motorists looking for a quiet backroad, though it is narrow and winding in sections. Day-trippers can tow or day-trip it from either park. tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/buescher
Buescher lies on the Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail and hosts songbirds, woodpeckers, and migrating species in spring and fall. The lake edge and quieter trail loops are prime viewing spots. Early mornings are most productive. tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/buescher
The park's shaded picnic area near the lake features stone tables and shelters built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. It is a good stop for a midday break with accessible RV parking nearby. Grills and restrooms are on site. tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/buescher
TPWD runs Junior Ranger Explorer Pack checkouts and a statewide geocaching program at Buescher for family-friendly activities. Stop by the park headquarters to pick up materials. Programs vary by season and staffing. tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/buescher
The historic town of Smithville sits about 3 miles from the park and offers cafes, antique shops, and a railroad heritage museum. It is an easy side trip when basing an RV at Buescher. Parking for larger rigs is available on the edges of downtown. tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/buescher
We had a very good time! Gloria was responsive and helpful. The RV was very nice. We had some minor issues with the propane and they came out to our campsite to get it fixed. Highly recommend renting with them!
