Late spring (April and May) and early fall (September and October) are the most comfortable windows for RV travel, with mild temperatures, lower humidity, and active wildlife viewing along the James River. Summer (June through August) brings warm swimming weather and the full program of interpretive canoe trips, but humidity, mosquitoes, and peak campground demand are higher. Shoulder months like March and November offer quieter campgrounds, cooler hiking, and blooming or fall foliage through the park's forests and formal gardens. Winter (December through February) is generally mild for Virginia but wet, and some seasonal facilities scale back.

Chippokes Plantation State Park, VA, United States
The park is near Surry, Virginia, about 15 miles upriver from Smithfield and roughly a 45 minute drive from Williamsburg via the Jamestown-Scotland Ferry across the James River, which carries RVs free of charge but has vehicle length and weight limits posted at the terminal. From Richmond it is about 60 miles (roughly 1 hour 15 minutes) via Route 10, and from Norfolk about 50 miles via US-258 and Route 10, avoiding the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel entirely. The nearest major airports for fly-and-rent trips are Norfolk International (ORF) and Richmond International (RIC). RV drivers should note rural two-lane approaches, low-clearance tree canopy on some park roads, and ferry boarding restrictions for taller rigs.
