Late May through early October is the prime window, when the lake, beach, and boat rentals are in full summer operation and overnight lows stay comfortable for camping. June and September are sweet spots, with warm days, cooler nights, and smaller crowds than the July and August peak. October brings strong fall color across the surrounding ridges, though nights turn cold and some services wind down. Winter is quiet, with limited facilities and the chance of snow or ice on the mountain approaches.

A sand swimming beach stretches along the 42-acre Cowans Gap Lake, open for unguarded swimming during the summer season. The day-use area has restrooms, a snack concession in peak season, and nearby picnic tables, making it an easy walk from the campground.
A level loop follows the shoreline of Cowans Gap Lake for an easy walk of just over one mile. The trail is suitable for most ability levels and connects the campground, beach, and picnic areas.
The long-distance Tuscarora Trail passes through the park and climbs the ridges on either side of the valley. Day hikers can pick up out-and-back segments for moderate climbs with ridgetop views of the Allegheny foothills.
This forested trail climbs the eastern ridge of the park to overlooks above the lake. Expect a steady uphill grade on rocky tread.
Seasonal concession rentals include kayaks, canoes, paddleboards, and rowboats for use on the no-wake lake. Only electric motors and non-powered boats are permitted, keeping the water calm for paddling and fishing.
The lake is stocked with trout in spring and also holds bass, panfish, and pickerel. Shoreline access is available from multiple pull-offs and a fishing pier, and a valid Pennsylvania fishing license is required.
Cowans Gap is surrounded by the 75,000-plus-acre Buchanan State Forest, which offers additional hiking, forest roads, and scenic drives. RVers often use the park as a basecamp to explore the broader Tuscarora Mountain area.
Nick was very thorough with showing me all the features of the trailer and ensured I had no issues.

Nick is very responsive and a great communicator throughout the process. He even checked in on us during our stay to make sure everything was working and if we had any questions. Highly recommend!

I recommend this RV, driving this rig was simple and comfortable. The layout and design of the interior space was perfect and roomy. The dining set makes into a very nice long bed. I will rent this one again.

This was our first time renting an RV. Bert and Spencer made the process seamless and easy. They were extremely flexible with pick-up and drop-off, went over the full operation of the RV, and made us feel comfortable and confident. The description, booking booking process, pick-up and return went perfectly. We will definitely be renting this RV again.

Cowans Gap State Park, PA, United States
The park sits off PA Route 75 near Fort Loudon, about 25 minutes north of the Pennsylvania Turnpike (I-76) and roughly 30 minutes west of Chambersburg. From Harrisburg it is about a 90-minute drive west, and from Pittsburgh it is roughly three hours east via the Turnpike. RV drivers should plan for a steady mountain climb over Tuscarora Mountain on PA 75, which includes grades and curves but no low tunnels or weight-restricted bridges on the main approach. The nearest major airport for fly-and-rent trips is Harrisburg International Airport (MDT), with Pittsburgh International (PIT) and Washington Dulles (IAD) as larger alternates.
