Late spring through early fall offers the best conditions for RV travel, with campgrounds open from April through October and warm weather ideal for the lake and waterfall. June through August brings peak swimming and paddling weather at Hunting Creek Lake but also the largest crowds, so reservations fill quickly on weekends. September and October deliver cooler temperatures, thinner crowds, and vivid Catoctin Mountain foliage. Winter visitors are limited to day-use areas since camping facilities close for the season.

The Lower Trail is a half-mile path from the lake parking area to the base of Cunningham Falls. Most folks approach from a parking lot near the lake and take the half-mile Lower Trail. It is the easiest route to the waterfall and suitable for most visitors. nps.gov/articles/000/exploring-cunningham-falls-state-park.htm
The Cliff Trail is a steeper alternative route that drops past dramatic rock formations down to the base of the falls. It starts out near the campsite and runs down the mountainside past dramatic rock formations, dropping about 400 feet in less than half a mile. Sturdy footwear is recommended.
Hunting Creek Lake is a 44-acre mountain lake in the William Houck Area with a sandy swim beach, boat launch, and rental boats in summer. Fishing is popular for bass, trout, and panfish. The day-use lot has space for larger vehicles.
The Catoctin Iron Furnace is a preserved ironworks in the Manor Area. The ironworks was in operation from 1776 until 1903, and interpretive panels describe how immigrants from Germany and Ireland worked alongside free and enslaved Africans; the remains of one of three stacks still stand. Parking is available at the site.
The Catoctin Trail is a long-distance hiking route linking three parks. It runs 27 miles from Gambrill State Park in the city of Frederick through Cunningham Falls State Park and on into Catoctin Mountain Park, with nine miles of trail inside Cunningham Falls. Hikers can choose short out-and-back segments from park trailheads.
The Scales and Tales Aviary in the Manor Area houses non-releasable native raptors and reptiles used for educational programs. It is a short, family-friendly stop near the Manor campground and visitor area.
The Falls Nature Trail connects the adjacent Catoctin Mountain Park visitor center to Cunningham Falls. The trail is 2.8 miles round trip from the visitor center to the falls and back, accessed from the gravel parking lot directly across from the visitor center. It is a good option when state park lots fill up. nps.gov/places/trailhead-cunningham-falls-nature-trail.htm
Nicholas was a great host. Very easy to reach and helpful. Everything was perfect for our 4th of July stay in the camper

He was great to work with. We even forgot to handoff the keys and he was very forgiving and gave us lots of options to get them returned.

Robert was extremely helpful, kind, knowledgeable, and patient with us. He was always available to help on the way and responded as soon he saw or heard. As first time RV renters, he gave us the best possible experience we could of had. We highly recommend.

I recommend this RV, driving this rig was simple and comfortable. The layout and design of the interior space was perfect and roomy. The dining set makes into a very nice long bed. I will rent this one again.

Cunningham Falls State Park, MD, United States
The park sits just off US Route 15 near Thurmont, Maryland, about a 20-minute drive north of Frederick and roughly 1 hour 15 minutes from Baltimore or Washington, D.C. RV drivers approaching the William Houck Area should use Route 77 west from Thurmont, a winding two-lane mountain road with sharp curves and grades that demand low gears and caution in larger rigs. Travelers should check for MD 77 flagging operations and potential road work that can affect both directions of travel. The nearest major airports for fly-and-rent trips are Baltimore/Washington International (BWI) and Washington Dulles (IAD), each about 60 to 70 miles away.
