The park sits about 17 miles north of Fredericksburg via RM 965, roughly 90 miles (about 1.5 to 2 hours) west of Austin and around 95 miles (about 2 hours) north of San Antonio. RM 965 is a paved two-lane Hill Country road with some narrow sections, low-water crossings, and tight curves, so drivers of larger rigs should plan for a slower pace and watch for oncoming traffic. There are no tunnels or major mountain passes on the route. The nearest major airports for fly-and-rent trips are Austin-Bergstrom International Airport and San Antonio International Airport.
Best time to visit Enchanted Rock State Natural Area
The best months to visit are October through April, when temperatures are cool and the granite dome is comfortable to climb. Spring brings wildflowers but also peak weekend crowds, and the park often reaches capacity by mid-morning on weekends and holidays. Summer is hot, with surface temperatures on the rock climbing well above air temperatures, so early-morning starts are recommended.
