Enchanted Rock State Natural Area, TX, United States
The park sits about 17 miles north of Fredericksburg via RM 965, roughly 90 miles (about 1.5 to 2 hours) west of Austin and around 95 miles (about 2 hours) north of San Antonio. RM 965 is a paved two-lane Hill Country road with some narrow sections, low-water crossings, and tight curves, so drivers of larger rigs should plan for a slower pace and watch for oncoming traffic. There are no tunnels or major mountain passes on the route. The nearest major airports for fly-and-rent trips are Austin-Bergstrom International Airport and San Antonio International Airport.
The best months to visit are October through April, when temperatures are cool and the granite dome is comfortable to climb. Spring brings wildflowers but also peak weekend crowds, and the park often reaches capacity by mid-morning on weekends and holidays. Summer is hot, with surface temperatures on the rock climbing well above air temperatures, so early-morning starts are recommended. Fall offers mild weather, clearer skies for stargazing, and fewer crowds midweek.

The Summit Trail is the park's signature hike, a roughly 0.8-mile one-way climb up the pink granite dome to panoramic Hill Country views. The ascent gains about 425 feet of elevation over open rock and can feel strenuous in heat. Start early to beat crowds and high surface temperatures. tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/enchanted-rock
The Loop Trail is a roughly 4-mile path that circles the base of Enchanted Rock, Little Rock, and Freshman Mountain. It passes through oak woodlands, creek crossings, and rocky sections with changing views of the domes. Expect uneven footing and limited shade. tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/enchanted-rock
Enchanted Rock is one of the top rock climbing destinations in Texas, with hundreds of established routes across multiple domes. Climbers must register at headquarters before starting. Bolting is regulated and traditional protection is encouraged. tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/enchanted-rock
The park offers some of the darkest skies within reach of Austin and San Antonio, with ranger-led star parties held on select nights. Bring a red flashlight to preserve night vision. The open granite summit and picnic areas are popular viewing spots. tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/enchanted-rock
Echo Canyon Trail is a short, rugged route that threads between Enchanted Rock and Little Rock through a boulder-strewn canyon. It links the Summit and Loop trails, making a scenic figure-eight possible. Watch for loose rock and tight squeezes. tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/enchanted-rock
The main day-use area near the trailhead offers shaded picnic tables, restrooms, and a large parking lot with space for trucks and tow vehicles. It is an easy base for families to gather between hikes. Arrive early on weekends, as the lot fills quickly. tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/enchanted-rock
The park supports white-tailed deer, armadillos, foxes, and over 100 bird species across its granite, woodland, and creekside habitats. The Loop Trail and Moss Lake area are especially productive at dawn and dusk. Spring and fall offer the best migration viewing. tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/enchanted-rock
Joe and Bekah delivered RV on time, set it up and were so helpful. We had a great time! Their is clean, comfortable and enough room for our two pups. The ac worked very well and we enjoyed being able to cook. I would recommend renting from them anytime!
