Late May through mid-September is the most comfortable window, with warm days, long evenings, and all campground services operating. June and July bring peak greenery along the James River but also the most mosquitoes and humidity, so May and September offer a pleasant shoulder-season balance with fewer bugs and cooler nights. Fall color in the cottonwood grove typically peaks in early October. Winters on the northern plains are cold and windy, and most services are reduced or closed.

Anglers fish the James River directly from the park's shaded banks for walleye, northern pike, channel catfish, and panfish. Shore access is easy from the campground and picnic areas, and a valid South Dakota fishing license is required.
A nine-hole public golf course is located within the park, making it one of the few South Dakota state parks with an on-site course. It is an easy walking layout set among the mature trees of the grove.
Short, flat nature trails wind through the cottonwood grove and along the James River bottomland. The paths are well suited for a quick leg-stretch from the campground and offer good birdwatching in the prairie-river transition zone.
The park preserves a restored one-room pioneer schoolhouse that interprets homesteading and early education on the Dakota prairie. It sits a short walk from the campground loop and picnic area.
The slow, meandering James River is well suited to canoes and kayaks launched from within the park. Paddlers should check current water levels before heading out, as flow varies significantly with seasonal rainfall.
Shaded picnic areas and shelters under the park's mature canopy provide a welcome break from the open prairie sun. Tables, grills, and restrooms are available, and the setting is a popular stop for travelers on US Highway 212.
The cottonwood grove and riverside habitat attract white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, and a wide range of songbirds and waterfowl. Spring and fall migrations are especially productive along the James River corridor.
