Late May through early September is the prime window, when the lake is open for swimming, the campground is in full operation, and shaded forest sites stay comfortable. July and August are the busiest and hottest months, so reservations fill well in advance and weekday arrivals are easier for larger rigs. Spring and fall shoulder seasons bring cooler hiking weather, fewer bugs, and strong autumn color along South Mountain, though the swim beach is typically closed outside the summer season.

The 42-acre lake features a guarded sandy swim beach that is the park's signature attraction in summer. A nearby parking area accommodates day-use visitors arriving by vehicle, and the beach is a short walk from the main campground.
Visitors can launch canoes, kayaks, and small boats with electric motors only (no gasoline engines) on the lake. A small boat launch and seasonal rentals make it easy for RV campers to spend an afternoon on the water.
The lake is stocked with trout in spring and also holds largemouth bass, bluegill, and channel catfish. Bank fishing is accessible from multiple shoreline points near the day-use parking areas.
A moderate forested loop that climbs from the lake area up toward the ridgeline and links with other park trails. Expect rocky footing typical of South Mountain and modest elevation gain.
The Appalachian Trail runs along the South Mountain ridge just east of the park and can be reached via connector trails or by short drives to trailheads like Washington Monument State Park. This gives RV campers easy access to one of the most famous long-distance footpaths in the country.
A short drive south on South Mountain leads to the original stone Washington Monument, a Civil War era landmark with panoramic views. The site has a day-use parking lot that accommodates tow vehicles and smaller RVs.
Antietam National Battlefield is about a 20-minute drive from the park and preserves the site of the bloodiest single day of the Civil War. The visitor center and auto tour route are RV-accessible and make a strong half-day outing from a Greenbrier base camp.
Nicholas was a great host. Very easy to reach and helpful. Everything was perfect for our 4th of July stay in the camper

He was great to work with. We even forgot to handoff the keys and he was very forgiving and gave us lots of options to get them returned.
Tyler S. - Jun 2026
Robert was extremely helpful, kind, knowledgeable, and patient with us. He was always available to help on the way and responded as soon he saw or heard. As first time RV renters, he gave us the best possible experience we could of had. We highly recommend.
Domingo F. - Jun 2026
I recommend this RV, driving this rig was simple and comfortable. The layout and design of the interior space was perfect and roomy. The dining set makes into a very nice long bed. I will rent this one again.

Greenbrier State Park, MD, United States
The park is on U.S. Route 40 about 10 miles east of Hagerstown and roughly 25 miles south of the Pennsylvania line, with Frederick about 20 miles east and Baltimore about 70 miles east via I-70. Most RVers approach on I-70 and exit toward U.S. 40; the final stretch climbs South Mountain with moderate grades, so drivers of larger motorhomes and trailers should plan for steady mountain ascents and use lower gears on the descent. There are no tunnels with RV restrictions on the main routes in, but low-clearance bridges exist on some secondary Washington County roads, so stick to U.S. 40 and I-70. The nearest major airport for fly-and-rent trips is Baltimore/Washington International (BWI), with Dulles (IAD) and Reagan National (DCA) also within roughly a two-hour drive.
