Late May through early October is the most reliable window for RV travel at Holly Recreation Area, with warm days, open swim beaches, and full campground services. July and August bring the warmest lake temperatures and the busiest weekends, so reservations are strongly recommended. Shoulder seasons in May, September, and early October offer cooler nights, fall color, and easier site availability, though some amenities wind down after Labor Day. Winter visits focus on day use, cross-country skiing, and ice fishing rather than RV camping.

McGinnis Lake is the main swim and paddle destination inside the park, with a sandy designated beach near the modern campground. Kayaks, canoes, and small boats are welcome, and shoreline fishing is popular.
The park maintains several miles of hiking loops that wind through rolling hills, wetlands, and hardwood forest. Trails vary from flat lakeside walks to moderate ridge climbs with scenic overlooks.
Holly Recreation Area includes a dedicated mountain biking trail system with multiple stacked loops ranging from beginner to advanced. The terrain features tight singletrack, short climbs, and flowing descents popular with riders from across metro Detroit.
Several lakes within the park, including Heron, Wildwood, and Valley Lakes, support populations of bass, panfish, and pike. A Michigan fishing license is required and shoreline as well as small-boat access is available.
The park offers a disc golf course set among mature trees and rolling terrain. It is open to the public with a valid Recreation Passport and suits both casual and experienced players.
Holly Recreation Area includes designated equestrian trails and a horsemen's staging area with trailer parking. Riders should bring proof of a negative Coggins test as required by Michigan regulations.
The Heron Lake day-use area offers picnic tables, grills, and shoreline views ideal for family gatherings. Parking accommodates vehicles and trailers, and restrooms are available seasonally.

Holly Recreation Area, MI, United States
The park is accessed from Grange Hall Road, just off Interstate 75 near the village of Holly. Detroit is about 55 miles south, roughly a 1 hour drive, and Flint is about 20 miles north. Ann Arbor sits about 45 miles to the southwest. RV drivers should note that I-75 through this corridor is flat and well suited to large rigs, but some local county roads leading to the rustic campground are narrower and can have low-hanging branches; there are no major tunnels, mountain passes, or steep grades. Bishop International Airport in Flint and Detroit Metropolitan Airport are the closest options for fly-and-rent trips.
