Late June through early September offers the driest, warmest weather in south Puget Sound and the calmest paddling conditions for reaching the island. Shoulder months in May and September bring fewer boaters and cooler temperatures but still generally navigable waters for experienced paddlers. Winter visits are possible for day use but bring cold rain, short daylight, and stronger tidal currents in Squaxin Passage. RV travelers should time mainland basecamp reservations around the summer peak, when nearby state park campgrounds fill quickly on weekends.

Arcadia Point near Shelton is a common kayak launch for the short crossing to Hope Island. Paddlers should check tide and current predictions in Squaxin Passage before committing to the crossing.
The island's gravel and shell beaches are open at low tide for walking, wildlife viewing, and photography. Visitors should stay below the high-tide line to avoid disturbing sensitive upland habitat.
A small number of primitive campsites are available on the island on a first-come, first-served basis. There is no potable water, so campers must bring all drinking water and pack out all waste.
The waters around the island support seasonal salmon, rockfish, and Dungeness crab fisheries under Washington state regulations. A current Washington fishing or shellfish license and compliance with season and quota rules are required.
Bald eagles, great blue herons, harbor seals, and river otters are frequently seen around the island's shoreline. Binoculars and a quiet approach improve chances of close observation.
RV travelers can stage at mainland campgrounds near Olympia and Shelton and day-trip to the island by kayak or small boat. This approach keeps hookups, dump stations, and supplies within easy reach while still allowing visits to the marine park.
Really great RV that was easy to drive and worked really well. Lots of space with the pop out, AC blows cold and the heating is warm. Was very comfortable the whole time. Steve the host is great and took the time to show me how everything worked in detail and had me completely comfortable to go on my trip. Canโt recommend this rental enough. Thank you.

We had such a great weekend camping in the Memory Maker! Danielle has thought of everything when it comes to making life easy while you are โroughing itโ. We felt cozy and comfortable sleeping as a family of 5. It was easy to pull behind our Tahoe as well. Great experience all around, we already have our next trip booked!

Hope Island State Park, WA, United States
The island sits roughly 15 miles northwest of Olympia and about 12 miles southeast of Shelton, with the closest mainland launches at Arcadia Point, Latimer's Landing, and the Steamboat Island area, each about a 20 to 40 minute drive from Olympia. From Seattle it is about 60 miles south via Interstate 5, approximately a 1.5 hour drive without traffic. RVers should note that I-5 through Tacoma and Olympia can be congested, and some smaller roads leading to boat ramps have tight turns, low-hanging branches, and limited trailer parking, so scout launches in advance. The nearest major airport for fly-and-rent trips is Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA), about 75 miles north.
