Late May through early October is the prime window for RV travel, when the campground is open, both beaches are staffed with lifeguards, and daytime temperatures are comfortable for swimming and hiking. July and August are warmest but also busiest, so reservations fill well in advance for holiday weekends. September and early October bring cooler nights, thinner crowds, and strong fall foliage across the surrounding Hudson Valley hills. Late fall and winter are limited to day use, and most camping facilities close for the season.

The park's two sand beaches on Lake Taghkanic are the main summer draw. Both have lifeguards in season, bathhouses, and easy parking that can accommodate RVs and tow vehicles in the main lots.
A network of wooded trails loops around the lake and through the surrounding forest, with gentle terrain suitable for most fitness levels. Trailheads start near the day-use areas with level parking close by.
Anglers target largemouth bass, panfish, and stocked trout from shore or small boats on the 170-acre lake. A New York State fishing license is required for anyone 16 and older.
The lake is well suited to kayaks, canoes, paddleboards, and small boats, with a concrete boat launch near the campground side of the park. Horsepower is limited to protect the shoreline, keeping the water calm for paddlers.
Shaded picnic areas with tables, grills, and pavilions sit near both beaches, and a playground gives families a break from the water. Day-use parking lots have room for larger vehicles.
The park makes a convenient RV base for exploring nearby Hudson, Rhinebeck, Olana State Historic Site, and the Taconic ridgeline. Most destinations are within a 30 to 45 minute drive via Route 82 and Route 23.
When snow allows, the park supports cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and ice fishing on the lake. Camping is closed, but day-use areas remain accessible from the main entrance.

We had a great experience renting from Krystal and her husband. They were responsive, helpful, and very accommodating from start to finish. The camper was a perfect solution for hosting our out-of-town guests and provided the extra space we needed. We would gladly rent from them again in the future.

Lake Taghkanic State Park, NY, United States
The park sits just off the Taconic State Parkway in Columbia County, about 2 hours north of New York City, roughly 45 minutes south of Albany, and about an hour west of the Berkshires in Massachusetts. RV drivers should note that the Taconic State Parkway prohibits commercial vehicles and has low clearances and tight curves on some bridges, so many larger motorhomes and towed rigs should use the New York State Thruway (I-87) to Route 23 east or Route 82 south instead. There are no major mountain passes on the approach, but secondary roads in the area are rolling and narrow in spots. The nearest major airport for fly-and-rent trips is Albany International Airport (ALB), with additional options at Bradley International (BDL) near Hartford and the New York City metro airports farther south.
