The best time to visit Lockhart State Park is from October through April, when Central Texas temperatures are mild, humidity is lower, and bugs are less active. Spring months of March and April bring wildflowers and comfortable camping weather, while fall offers cool nights ideal for RV travel. Summers are hot and humid with highs often in the mid-90s Fahrenheit, though the seasonal swimming pool and shaded campsites help. Winter is a quiet shoulder season with occasional cold fronts but generally mild daytime conditions.

Lockhart State Park is home to a nine-hole golf course built in part by the Civilian Conservation Corps, one of only a handful of Texas state parks with a course. The layout is short and walkable, making it a relaxed half-day activity for RV campers staying on site.
Short nature trails wind through post oak woodlands and along the bluffs above Plum Creek. The loops are generally under two miles combined and suitable for most fitness levels, with trailhead parking accessible from the main park road.
The CCC-era swimming pool operates during the summer months and is a welcome cool-down on hot Central Texas afternoons. Check ahead for current operating dates, as the pool is closed outside of the warm season.
Plum Creek runs through the park and offers fishing for sunfish, catfish, and bass. No state fishing license is required within Texas state park boundaries, making it easy for RV travelers to try a line.
The park preserves stone pavilions, retaining walls, and refectory buildings constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. Day-use picnic sites with tables and grills are positioned near these historic structures for a scenic lunch stop.
The town of Lockhart, just a few minutes from the park, is known as the Barbecue Capital of Texas and features a historic courthouse square. RVers can leave their rig at the campsite and drive in for barbecue and shopping.
The mix of post oak woodland, creek habitat, and open meadow at Lockhart State Park supports deer, armadillos, songbirds, and raptors. Early morning and evening around the campground and along the creek are the best times for sightings.

Lockhart State Park, TX, United States
Lockhart State Park sits just off Park Road 10 southwest of the city of Lockhart, accessed from US Highway 183. It is roughly a 35 to 45 minute drive (about 30 miles) south of downtown Austin and about 75 miles northeast of San Antonio, with both cities offering major airports for fly-and-rent trips. The access roads are paved and generally RV-friendly with no tunnels or mountain passes, though the park road is winding and narrow in places, so large rigs should take the final approach slowly. Austin-Bergstrom International Airport is the nearest major airport for travelers picking up an RV rental.
