Spring, from March through May, is the most popular time to visit, with mild Hill Country temperatures, wildflowers along Park Road 4, and comfortable weather for hiking between cave tours. Fall, from late September through November, offers similar conditions with smaller crowds. Summer days are hot outside, though the cavern itself stays cool year round, making tours a good midday escape. Winter visits are quieter and tours typically continue, but shorter daylight hours limit above-ground hiking.

The Walking Cave Tour is the park's signature activity, a guided stroll along a developed path through the main chambers of Longhorn Cavern. Guides interpret the geology, human history, and legends associated with the cave. Tours depart from the historic CCC-built visitor complex.
The Wild Cave Tour is an off-trail adventure tour for older children and adults who want to crawl, climb, and squeeze through undeveloped sections of the cavern. Participants wear helmets and headlamps and should expect to get muddy. Reservations are generally required.
The Observation Tower is a stone CCC-era structure offering panoramic views of the surrounding Hill Country. A short stair climb leads to the top. It sits a short walk from the main parking area.
Backbone Ridge Nature Trail is a short above-ground loop that winds through oak and juniper woodland typical of the Edwards Plateau. Interpretive signage explains native plants and geology. The trail begins near the visitor complex.
The historic CCC complex features stone buildings constructed in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps, including the administration building, observation tower, and cave entrance structures. Exhibits describe the cavern's geology and its role in Texas history. It is the hub for tour check-in and gift shop visits.
Park Road 4 is a scenic CCC-era parkway linking Longhorn Cavern with Inks Lake State Park. It is a 15 1/2 mile long parkway with a slow speed limit, designed with the concept that getting there is half of the experience. The route is narrow and winding, so oversized rigs should drive with caution.
Picnic sites near the visitor complex provide shaded tables for a meal before or after a cave tour. The area includes restrooms and easy access to short walking paths. It is a convenient stop for RV travelers touring the Highland Lakes.
This RV trailer was immaculate to begin with. Joe had it completely setup (water, electric, sewer, leveled) at the exact time we had agreed to. He went over all of the features of the trailer with me before departing and answered his phone whenever we had any questions. I'll definitely rent from Joe again and would recommend anyone in the Texas Hill Country to do the same with absolute confidence. Thanks Joe and Bekah!

This RV was awesome! Joseph and Bekah delivered it and set it up. They even made the bed, provided linens/towels, pots and pans, dishes, a coffee pot…. We are cooks and their knives are better than ours! We will rent this RV again!

We had an incredible experience renting an RV for the F1 weekend in Austin. Communication was flawless from start to finish - they were friendly, responsive, and genuinely great to work with. They handled the entire setup and pickup, making the process completely seamless and stress-free. I would absolutely recommend renting from them and wouldn’t hesitate to book again. If you’re on the fence, don’t be, you're in great hands!

Longhorn Cavern State Park, TX, United States
The park sits in the Texas Hill Country near Burnet, about 60 miles (roughly 1 hour 15 minutes) northwest of Austin via US 183 and SH 29, and about 90 miles (around 2 hours) north of San Antonio via US 281. Access is via Park Road 4, a narrow, winding CCC-era parkway with tight curves and limited shoulders, so larger motorhomes and long trailers should drive slowly and watch for low-speed scenic traffic. The nearest major fly-and-rent airport is Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS). There are no RV hookups inside the park, so most renters stay at private RV parks near Burnet, Marble Falls, or Inks Lake State Park and visit for the day.
