Late May through early October is the best window, when the access road is reliably snow-free and the reservoir is open for boating and fishing. July and August bring warm days and the calmest water, while June and September are quieter and cooler, ideal for RVers who prefer shoulder-season travel. Spring runoff can leave the approach road muddy, and winter access is limited by snow and ice on the canyon road.
Access road often snow-covered; park effectively closed for water recreation
Winter conditions; reservoir typically iced over
Spring thaw; road may be muddy or icy
Ice-off period; conditions variable
Boating season typically opens; spring runoff high
Pleasant weather, lower crowds
Peak season; warmest water temperatures
Peak season; watch for afternoon thunderstorms
Quiet shoulder season with fall colors
Early snow possible; water recreation winding down
Water recreation season ending; road may ice over
Winter conditions; reservoir frozen, limited access
Lost Creek Reservoir is the park's main draw and produces rainbow trout and cutthroat trout from shore and boat. A gravel boat ramp and shoreline access suit small craft and anglers with tube floats.
The reservoir is a calm, uncrowded spot for kayaks, canoes, paddleboards, and small motorboats. A concrete ramp near the dam provides launch access, and the narrow canyon shape keeps wind chop manageable on most mornings.
The surrounding sage and aspen country supports mule deer, elk, moose, and a variety of raptors. Early morning and evening along the reservoir shoreline are the best times to spot wildlife from a vehicle or short walk.
Primitive day-use areas along the reservoir offer picnicking with open views of the water and canyon. Bring shade and water, as facilities are limited to vault toilets and there is no potable water on site.
The drive in from the I-84 Croydon exit follows Lost Creek up a quiet ranching valley and makes a worthwhile outing on its own. Expect open pastureland, rolling hills, and the historic Devils Slide rock formation visible near the freeway exit.
When the reservoir freezes over in mid-winter, experienced anglers target trout through the ice. Access depends on road conditions, and the park does not maintain winter facilities, so ice fishing is strictly for prepared visitors.
With no nearby towns or highway lighting, the park offers dark skies on clear nights. Summer evenings are ideal for visitors who want to combine a day on the water with post-sunset sky viewing.

We had a great time and Angela was very accommodating and easy to work with! The RV worked well and was a great addition to our trip. Angela was very generous with pick up and drop off times, which initially caught our attention when shopping around.

Lost Creek State Park, UT, United States
From Salt Lake City, the park is about a 60 mile, 1 hour drive northeast via Interstate 84 to the Croydon exit, then roughly 10 miles on Lost Creek Road to the reservoir. From Ogden, plan on about 35 miles and 45 minutes via I-84. The final stretch on Lost Creek Road is a narrow, paved county road that climbs gradually into the canyon, so larger RVs should take it slowly and watch for cattle, washboard sections, and tight turnouts. The nearest major airport for fly-and-rent trips is Salt Lake City International.
