MacKerricher State Park, CA, United States
MacKerricher State Park is located three miles north of Fort Bragg on Highway 1, a scenic coastal route. From Santa Rosa, the drive is 109 miles northwest (approximately 2.5 hours); from Sacramento, it is 192 miles (about 4 hours). The nearest major airports for fly-and-rent are San Francisco International and Oakland International, approximately 177-180 miles south (3-4 hours drive). Highway 1 is a narrow, winding coastal road in some sections; check current conditions before traveling with larger RVs.
Late June through August offer the warmest, driest conditions with daytime highs around 63-68°F, though this is peak season. May and September-October are ideal for fewer crowds and mild temperatures between 56-67°F. Winter (December-February) is wet and cool with highs around 47-55°F, but the park remains open and offers excellent gray whale watching from December through May.

Glass Beach at the park's southern end is famous for its fields of sand-polished glass pebbles, the result of decades of collected refuse now polished smooth by ocean waves. The unique and accessible beach makes for an easy scenic walk along the coastline.
This 0.6 mile elevated boardwalk loop offers wheelchair-accessible access around a scenic headland with views of harbor seal colonies and tide pool areas. The boardwalk is an excellent spot for spotting migrating gray whales during winter and spring months.
Explore the park's tide pools to discover starfish, sea urchins, anemones, crabs, and other marine life. Access points include areas near Laguna Point and other coastal stretches throughout the park, best visited at low tide.
A 1.3 mile loop trail circles this 30-acre freshwater lake, offering walking, bird watching, and fishing opportunities. The lake is stocked with trout, bass, bluegill, and other species accessible from shore or non-motorized boats.
This popular 5.6 mile coastal trail provides scenic ocean views and access to various park features including Laguna Point and tide pool areas. The trail is suitable for hikers, joggers, and cyclists with views of headlands and coves.
MacKerricher is an official site on The Whale Trail, offering excellent opportunities to observe gray whale migrations from shore. Watch the southbound migration from December through January, and the northbound return in March through May.
This 7.6 mile scenic beach walk stretches along the park's northern coastline, offering views of sand dunes, headlands, and diverse coastal habitat. The trail provides access to remote beach sections and is suitable for hikers of moderate fitness.
